SC House of Representatives Districts: Maps and Redistricting

South Carolina’s House of Representatives is divided into 124 single-member districts, each covering roughly 41,000 residents, and you can look up which one you live in through free tools maintained by the General Assembly and the state’s Revenue and Fiscal Affairs Office. The boundaries in effect today were drawn after the 2020 Census and first used in the 2024 elections.1South Carolina Legislature. South Carolina House of Representatives

Find Your District by Address

The quickest lookup is the “Find Your Legislator” tool on the General Assembly’s website. Type in your street address, city, and zip code, and it returns your House district number along with your representative’s name, party, and contact information. The same search also shows your state Senate district and your U.S. congressional district, so one query covers all three levels at once.

The Revenue and Fiscal Affairs Office runs a second tool called “SC District Info” that pulls a wider set of boundaries tied to your address. In addition to your House district, it returns your county council district, school district and school board district, voting precinct, circuit court district, magistrate district, and local sales tax rates.2South Carolina Revenue and Fiscal Affairs Office. RFA publishes both interactive and printable maps of all 124 House districts. The interactive application lets you toggle layers on and off, zoom to street level, and see exactly where one district ends and the next begins. You can also overlay House, Senate, and congressional boundaries on the same view.2South Carolina Revenue and Fiscal Affairs Office. RFA District Info Web Map Instructions

PDF maps of individual districts and the full statewide House plan are available on the same page. Both formats reflect the boundaries currently in effect.

Contact Your Representative

Once you have your district number, the Legislature’s website lists a Columbia office phone number, an email address, and a State House mailing address for your representative. The same page shows their committee assignments, sponsored bills, and voting record. Committee membership is worth noting, because most bills either advance or quietly die in committee before ever reaching the full House.

House members also handle constituent services, which often means helping residents cut through problems with state agencies. If a state process has stalled and you aren’t sure where to turn, your representative’s office is a reasonable first call.

How the District Lines Get Drawn

In South Carolina, the General Assembly draws its own district lines. Redistricting is passed as an ordinary statute and sent to the governor for signature or veto, which places South Carolina among the states where the legislature controls its own map rather than delegating the job to an independent commission.3Prof. Justin Levitt’s Guide to Drawing the Electoral Lines. South Carolina – All About Redistricting Proposals to create a citizens redistricting commission have been introduced but, as of 2026, none have become law.

The maps get redrawn after every decennial census. The Census Bureau delivers state population counts no later than April 1 of the year following the census, meaning states will receive 2030 data by April 1, 2031.4United States Census Bureau. The Current Map

The legislature passed the current House lines in H 4493 on December 9, 2021, and the governor signed the bill the following day. Pending litigation prompted revisions through S 1024, passed on June 15, 2022, and signed on June 17, 2022. The revised maps took effect with the 2024 elections.3Prof. Justin Levitt’s Guide to Drawing the Electoral Lines. South Carolina – All About Redistricting

Federal Rules on the Maps

Every state legislative map has to satisfy federal law. The Equal Protection Clause requires districts of roughly equal population; the Supreme Court has signaled that total population deviations under 10% among state legislative districts will rarely be struck down, while deviations approaching 20% are almost certainly unconstitutional without strong justification.5Legal Information Institute (LII) at Cornell Law School. Equality Standard and Vote Dilution

Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act separately prohibits maps that dilute minority voting power. The Constitution also bars using race as the predominant factor in drawing lines, though race may be considered as one factor among several when there is a compelling reason. Partisan fairness is a different story: the Supreme Court held in 2019 that partisan gerrymandering claims are political questions federal courts cannot resolve, so any challenge on pure partisanship grounds in South Carolina would have to proceed under state law.6Supreme Court of the United States. Running for a House Seat

To run for the South Carolina House, a candidate must be at least 21 years old at the time of election, a legal resident of the district at the time of filing, and a qualified elector under the state Constitution.7South Carolina Legislature. The Constitution of the State of South Carolina 1895 A felony conviction under state or federal law disqualifies a candidate unless they receive a pardon or file at least 15 years after completing the full sentence, including probation and parole.

Candidates who do not run through a party primary can qualify by petition. The petition needs signatures from at least 5% of the registered voters in the district, capped at 10,000 signatures regardless of district size.8South Carolina Legislature. South Carolina Code of Laws Title 7 Chapter 11 Party-affiliated candidates go through their party’s primary and pay a filing fee set by the party.

House members serve two-year terms, so the entire chamber stands for election every general election cycle.
