A South Dakota driver’s license renewal happens every five years, on your birthday, and you can start up to 180 days early. The fee is $38, and you have three options: online, by mail, or in person at an exam station. Miss your expiration by more than 30 days and you’ll have to pass the written knowledge test before the state issues a new card.
When Your License Expires and When You Can Renew
A standard operator’s license is valid for five years and expires on your birthday.1South Dakota Legislature. Renewing early doesn’t shorten your next cycle: the new license runs five years from your next birthday.
One exception applies if you’re turning 21. In that case, you can only renew during the 30 days immediately after your birthday.2South Dakota Department of Public Safety. Apply for a Renewal or Replacement License or ID Card
After expiration, you have a 30-day grace period. Within that window the state still waives the knowledge and driving tests, and you renew normally.1South Dakota Legislature. Three Ways to Renew
South Dakota lets you renew online, by mail, or in person, but not everyone qualifies for the remote options.
Online
Online renewal is available once every ten years, meaning every other cycle.3South Dakota Department of Public Safety. Renew or Replace Online To qualify, your current license must be unexpired (or expired fewer than 30 days), it must show the REAL ID gold star in the upper right corner, and you can’t have used online or mail renewal for the previous cycle.2South Dakota Department of Public Safety. You’ll use the SD.gov portal, upload or mail in your vision statement, and pay by credit or debit card. The new license arrives by mail in about four to six weeks.4South Dakota Department of Public Safety. DPS Driver License / ID Card Online Renewal
By Mail
Mail renewal follows the same eligibility rules as online: current REAL ID-compliant license, unexpired or within the grace window, and no remote renewal last time.2South Dakota Department of Public Safety. In Person
An in-person visit is required if any of the following is true: you’re past the 30-day grace period, you renewed remotely last time, you don’t yet have a REAL ID-compliant license, or you’re upgrading to REAL ID for the first time. You can walk in or schedule an appointment at any exam station. What It Costs
A standard operator’s license renewal is $38, regardless of whether you renew early, on time, or in the grace period.5South Dakota Legislature. Exam stations take cash, checks, and cards. Online renewals require a card and may add a small processing surcharge. Mail-in applicants should send a check or money order.
Documents and Vision Screening
Every renewal requires a vision screening. At an exam station it happens on-site; for online or mail renewal you submit a vision statement signed by a licensed optometrist or ophthalmologist.
If your current license already displays the gold REAL ID star and you’re renewing online or by mail, you don’t need to resubmit identity documents. If you’re going in person to upgrade to REAL ID for the first time, bring originals or certified copies (photocopies are not accepted) in three categories:7South Dakota Department of Public Safety. - Proof of identity and date of birth, such as a certified U.S. birth certificate, valid U.S. passport, or certificate of citizenship or naturalization.
- Proof of your Social Security number, such as your Social Security card, a W-2, a 1099, or a paycheck stub showing your full name and complete number.
- Two documents showing your South Dakota physical address, dated within the past year. Utility bills, bank statements, vehicle registration, and lease or mortgage agreements qualify. Handwritten documents don’t.
The state may also require a physical or mental fitness evaluation if a medical condition that could affect driving is reported or observed.
If You Let Your License Expire
Driving on an expired South Dakota license is a Class 2 misdemeanor, which carries up to 30 days in jail and a fine.8South Dakota Legislature. South Dakota Codified Law 32-12-22 – Valid License Required
Past 30 days, the renewal itself also gets harder. You’ll have to pass the written knowledge test before the state will issue a new license, and if you carry a motorcycle endorsement, you’ll take both the standard and motorcycle knowledge tests.3South Dakota Department of Public Safety. Military Extensions
Active-duty service members stationed outside South Dakota get an automatic extension. Your license stays valid for the full length of your service away from the state, plus 90 days after honorable separation or your return to South Dakota, whichever comes first.9South Dakota Legislature. While the extension is in effect, carry both the expired license and your military ID, orders, or separation papers when driving. You can also renew electronically or by mail during your service. If you renew more than 30 days after the printed expiration date, expect to show military documentation to avoid the knowledge test requirement.9South Dakota Legislature. Name Changes at Renewal
If your legal name has changed since your last license, bring the document that establishes the change: a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order. Update your Social Security card with the Social Security Administration first, because the state can’t process the name change on your license until that’s done. CDL Holders: A Separate Medical Deadline
If you hold a commercial driver’s license, a second clock runs alongside your renewal cycle. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration requires every CDL holder to certify one of four operating categories: interstate non-excepted, interstate excepted, intrastate non-excepted, or intrastate excepted.10Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Let that certificate lapse and your commercial driving privileges are downgraded. Your underlying license remains, but you can’t legally operate a commercial vehicle until the medical certification is current again.10Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
