A Sevier County marriage license costs $101 for Tennessee residents and $41 for out-of-state couples. Both applicants must appear together at one of three county clerk offices with a valid photo ID, pay the fee, and sign the application. There is no waiting period and no blood test, so you can marry the same day. The license is valid for 30 days from issue.
What It Costs and How to Pay Less
The fee depends on where you live and whether you have taken a premarital course:
- Tennessee residents: $101.
- Out-of-state residents: $41.
- Tennessee residents who completed a qualifying four-hour premarital preparation course: $41.
The gap comes from a statewide $62.50 surcharge, $60 of which is waived in two situations: when both applicants are non-Tennessee residents applying in a qualifying tourist resort county, or when both applicants complete a four-hour premarital preparation course.1University of Tennessee County Technical Assistance Service. Additional Fee, Premarital Preparation Course Sevier County is currently the only Tennessee county that qualifies as a premier tourist resort, so out-of-state couples get the reduced rate automatically.
If you are a Tennessee resident taking the course route, both of you must complete it within one year before applying, and each person needs a notarized certificate of completion.2Sevier County Government. Sevier County Clerk – Marriages
Cash is accepted everywhere. Visa and Mastercard are accepted with a small transaction fee.
Who Can Apply and What to Bring
Both applicants must be at least 18 to apply without additional approval. Tennessee law bars a county clerk from issuing a license when either person is under 17, or when one person is 17 and the other is four or more years older.3Justia. Tennessee Code 36-3-105 – Minimum Age of Applicant for License
Both of you must appear in person, together. Tennessee does not allow proxy marriages, so neither party can send a stand-in.
Each applicant needs to bring:
- A valid photo ID: driver’s license, state-issued photo ID card, military ID, or passport. A certified birth certificate on its own is not enough. Non-U.S. citizens need only a valid passport.2Sevier County Government. Sevier County Clerk – Marriages
- Your Social Security number. You do not need the physical card, but you must know the number. Non-U.S. citizens without an SSN are exempt when they present a valid passport.
If either of you was previously married, you will be asked for the exact month, day, and year that marriage ended, whether by divorce or death. The physical divorce papers are not always required, but bringing them avoids delay if the clerk has questions.
Where to Go

The Online Pre-Application
The Sevier County Clerk has an online pre-application that sends your information to the office before you arrive.5Tennessee County Clerk. Sevier County Marriage License You enter names, dates of birth, parental information, and marital history through the portal. It takes about five minutes, cuts your time at the counter, and reduces the chance of a typo on your legal document.
The pre-application does not replace the in-person visit. Both of you still need to show up with ID, verify the information, and sign the application in front of the clerk. Once you do, the clerk prints the license and hands it to you. Start to finish, the counter visit usually runs 15 to 30 minutes when the data is pre-entered.
The license is valid for 30 days from the date it is issued.6Justia. Tennessee Code 36-3-103 – License Required If the ceremony does not happen within that window, the license expires and you start the process over, fee included.
Who Can Legally Perform the Ceremony
Tennessee allows a wide range of officiants, including ordained ministers and other religious leaders, current and former judges, the governor, county mayors, county clerks, members of county and municipal legislative bodies, municipal mayors, notaries public, and law enforcement chaplains.7Justia. Tennessee Code 36-3-301 – Persons Who May Solemnize Marriages Any Tennessee notary public can officiate a wedding, which makes a notary the easiest backup if your plans fall through.8Tennessee Secretary of State. Can a Notary Perform Marriages?
One restriction catches people: ministers ordained online cannot officiate marriages in Tennessee. The statute requires ordination through “a considered, deliberate, and responsible act” within a recognized religious organization and explicitly excludes online ordinations. Ceremonies performed by online-ordained ministers before July 1, 2019, are grandfathered in, but any ceremony after that date needs a properly authorized officiant. If a friend was ordained online to marry you, choose someone else.
Witnesses are not required. Only the couple and the officiant need to be present.
After the Ceremony
Your officiant has a tight deadline. After the ceremony, they must sign the license, record the date and time of the marriage, and return it to the Sevier County Clerk within three days.9Justia. Tennessee Code 36-3-303 – Return of License to Clerk That is three calendar days, not three business days. Failure to return the license is a Class C misdemeanor. The signed license can be dropped off at any of the three clerk locations or mailed in.
The license and the marriage certificate are different documents. The license authorizes the ceremony; the certificate is the permanent record that proves it happened. After the clerk records the returned license, the certified marriage certificate is mailed to the couple, typically within two to three weeks.2Sevier County Government.
