To reach Social Security from anywhere in Virginia, call the national toll-free line at 1-800-772-1213, staffed Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time.1Social Security Administration. Contact Social Security By Phone For anything that needs a representative who knows your file, each Virginia field office has its own direct number, which you can look up by ZIP code at ssa.gov/locator.2Social Security Administration. Outside staffed hours, the automated system runs 24/7 and can handle common requests on its own, including benefit verification letters, replacement SSA-1099 tax forms, claim status, address updates, and replacement Medicare cards.1Social Security Administration. Contact Social Security By Phone
Finding Your Local Virginia Office Number
Virginia field offices run from Northern Virginia through the Tidewater region, each with its own direct line and its own regional caseload. Enter your ZIP code at ssa.gov/locator and you’ll get the office address, phone number, and directions.2Social Security Administration. Field Office Locator
Calling your local office directly is worth the extra step for a complicated claim or an in-person appointment. The national line handles broad questions well, but a local representative who already has access to your file can often finish the job faster. Local offices generally keep shorter hours than the 800 line, typically 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on weekdays.
Best Times to Call
Hold times on the national number can run well over an hour during peak periods. The SSA says waits are shorter early in the morning (between 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. local time), later in the week (Wednesday through Friday), and later in the month.3Social Security Administration. When to Start Receiving Retirement Benefits The first few days of each month are the worst, since benefit payments go out then and call volume spikes.
Days immediately after a federal holiday also run heavy. If your deadline sits near a holiday, call a day or two early rather than waiting for offices to reopen.
What to Have Ready Before You Call
Representatives verify your identity at the start of every call. Keep these within reach:
- Your Social Security number
- Date of birth
- Current mailing address
- Any recent SSA correspondence, including claim numbers, notice reference numbers, or appeal letters
Without the first three, the representative can’t pull up your record. Having recent letters in front of you lets them skip the search and go straight to your issue.
Direct Deposit Changes Need a One-Time Code
Since April 2025, the SSA has required a one-time code before it will change direct deposit information over the phone. Generate the code by signing in to your my Social Security account at ssa.gov/PIN before you call, then read it to the representative.4Social Security Administration. What to Know about Proving Your Identity If you can’t create an online account, the change has to be made in person at a local office or through your bank. The rule exists to keep thieves from rerouting benefits with stolen personal information.
Scheduling an Appointment by Phone
When you call either the national line or your local office, you can ask for an in-person appointment at the Virginia office that serves your ZIP code. The representative checks the office calendar, offers available times, and tells you what to bring. Pre-scheduled appointments generally mean shorter waits than walking in.
Video Appointments Through Social Security Video Connect
If getting to a physical office is hard, ask about Social Security Video Connect, which runs on Microsoft Teams and works from any device with a webcam and internet.5Social Security Administration. Connect with Social Security from Anywhere with Social Security Video Connect Video appointments cover benefit applications, Medicare questions, overpayment issues, SSI redeterminations, and replacement Social Security cards for U.S. citizens. Call 1-800-772-1213 or your local office to request one. If you qualify, staff will email you a link for the scheduled time.
Language and Hearing Accessibility
Interpreter services are free. Spanish speakers press 2 after dialing 1-800-772-1213. For any other language, press 1 and stay on the line; the representative will bring an interpreter onto the call.6Social Security Administration. Spotlight on Interpreter Services If the matter can’t be resolved by phone, the agency will schedule an office appointment and arrange for an interpreter there as well.
TTY users can reach the SSA at 1-800-325-0778 during the same weekday hours as the main line.1Social Security Administration. Contact Social Security By Phone
When Online Is Faster Than Calling
A free my Social Security account at ssa.gov now handles a lot of what used to require a phone call: applying for retirement, disability, or Medicare; checking an application or appeal; changing your address or direct deposit; printing a benefit verification letter or 1099; reviewing your earnings record; and in most areas, requesting a replacement Social Security card.7Social Security Administration. Online Services The portal is available around the clock with no hold time. Save the phone call for questions about eligibility, overpayments, or appeals, where talking through the specifics with a person actually helps.
Watch Out for Fake Social Security Numbers
Searching online for a Social Security contact number is one of the easiest ways to land on a scam. Fraudsters impersonate SSA employees by phone, text, email, and social media, sometimes using the names of real agency staff.8Social Security Administration. Protect Yourself from Social Security Scams The only legitimate phone numbers are 1-800-772-1213 and the local office numbers listed at ssa.gov/locator. Treat any other number claiming to be Social Security as suspicious.
The real SSA will never:
- Threaten arrest for nonpayment
- Claim to suspend your Social Security number
- Demand payment by gift card, wire transfer, or cryptocurrency
- Pressure you to act immediately or keep the call secret
- Offer to move your money into a “protected” account
- Demand personal information to activate a cost-of-living adjustment
SSA staff do call people, but only in narrow circumstances: you recently applied for benefits, your record needs an update, or you asked for a callback.8Social Security Administration. Protect Yourself from Social Security Scams If a call feels off, hang up and dial 1-800-772-1213 yourself. Report suspected scams to the SSA Office of the Inspector General at 1-800-269-0271 (10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday) or at oig.ssa.gov.9Social Security Administration.
