To estimate your South Carolina food stamps amount, start with the maximum monthly allotment for your household size and subtract 30% of your net income after deductions. For fiscal year 2026, that ceiling runs from $298 for a single person to $994 for a family of four, with a $24 monthly minimum for one- and two-person households whose formula result would otherwise be lower. The calculator below walks through the same math the South Carolina Department of Social Services uses.
Maximum Monthly Benefit by Household Size
These are the most you can receive, reserved for households with zero net income after deductions. They apply from October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026.1Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP FY2026 Maximum Allotments and Deductions
- 1 person: $298
- 2 people: $546
- 3 people: $785
- 4 people: $994
- 5 people: $1,183
- 6 people: $1,421
- 7 people: $1,571
- 8 people: $1,789
- Each additional person: add $218
If the formula produces a benefit under $24 for a one- or two-person household, you still receive $24.
How the Calculation Works
The federal formula is the same in every state. Take the maximum allotment for your household size and subtract 30% of your net monthly income. The 30% figure assumes households spend roughly that share of their own resources on food, and SNAP covers the rest.2Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Eligibility
Net income is not the same as take-home pay. It is your gross income minus the deductions SNAP allows. Every dollar of deduction you can document raises your benefit by 30 cents.
A Worked Example for a Family of Four
Consider a household of four with $2,500 in gross monthly income, $2,200 of which comes from wages, paying $1,100 a month for rent and utilities.
- Gross monthly income: $2,500
- Subtract 20% earned income deduction ($2,200 × 0.20 = $440): $2,060
- Subtract the standard deduction of $209: $1,851
- Half of adjusted income is $925.50; shelter costs of $1,100 exceed that by $174.50, which becomes the shelter deduction
- Net income: $1,851 − $174.50 = $1,676.50
- 30% of net income: $503 (rounded up)
- Monthly SNAP benefit: $994 − $503 = $491
Run the same math with your own numbers. The two inputs that move the result the most are earned income and shelter costs.
Income Limits You Have to Meet First
Before the formula applies, your household has to clear two income tests. Households that include someone 60 or older or someone with a disability only need to pass the net income test.
Gross Income Limit (130% of the Federal Poverty Level)
- 1 person: $1,696/month
- 2 people: $2,292/month
- 3 people: $2,888/month
- 4 people: $3,483/month
Add roughly $596 per additional household member.3Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP FY2026 Income Eligibility Standards
Net Income Limit (100% of the Federal Poverty Level)
- 1 person: $1,305/month
- 2 people: $1,763/month
- 3 people: $2,221/month
- 4 people: $2,680/month
Gross income counts wages, Social Security, disability payments, unemployment, child support received, and most other money coming into the household.2Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Eligibility
South Carolina uses broad-based categorical eligibility, so most applicants face no asset test. You do not have to drain savings or sell a vehicle to qualify.4Food and Nutrition Service. Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility
Deductions That Raise Your Benefit
Reporting every deduction you qualify for is how most households increase their monthly amount. These are the ones that apply in South Carolina.
Standard Deduction
Every household gets a flat $209 per month for sizes of one to three, with higher amounts for larger households. It comes off automatically.2Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Eligibility
Earned Income Deduction
Twenty percent of wages, salary, and self-employment income is excluded before the rest of the calculation runs. Earning $1,500 a month means $300 is removed up front.
Shelter and Utilities
If your rent or mortgage plus property taxes, insurance, and utilities exceed half your income after the other deductions, the excess counts as a shelter deduction. The cap is $744 per month for households without an elderly or disabled member. Households with an elderly or disabled member have no cap.1Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP FY2026 Maximum Allotments and Deductions
South Carolina uses a Standard Utility Allowance rather than requiring individual utility bills. If you pay heating or cooling separately from rent, the full heating and cooling allowance applies. A smaller allowance covers households paying only non-heating utilities like electricity or phone service. Qualifying for the allowance is enough; you don’t need to submit the bills themselves.
Dependent Care and Child Support Paid
Child care or adult dependent care costs paid so you can work or attend training are deductible. Legally owed child support you pay to someone outside your household also comes off your countable income.
Medical Expenses for Elderly or Disabled Members
A household member who is 60 or older or has a disability can deduct out-of-pocket medical costs above $35 per month. Prescriptions, medical equipment, transportation to appointments, and unreimbursed health insurance premiums all count. A member with $135 in monthly medical costs gets a $100 deduction, which trims net income and raises the SNAP benefit by $30.5Food and Nutrition Service. SNAP Medical Expenses Handbook
Faster Benefits for Households in Crisis
Expedited SNAP delivers benefits within seven days of applying. You qualify if your household has less than $150 in gross monthly income and less than $100 in cash and bank balances, or if your combined monthly income and liquid resources are less than your rent or mortgage plus utility costs. Expedited processing does not change the amount you receive; it only shortens the wait. Mention it when you apply or during your phone interview so your case is flagged.2Food and Nutrition Service. What South Carolina SNAP Will Not Pay For
The calculator tells you the dollar amount, but it is worth knowing what those dollars can and cannot buy, because a late-2025 waiver narrowed the rules in South Carolina more than in most states. SNAP covers fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy, bread, cereals, snack foods, non-alcoholic beverages, and seeds and plants that grow food. It never covers alcohol, tobacco, vitamins or supplements, hot prepared foods, pet food, cleaning supplies, or personal care items.6Food and Nutrition Service. What Can SNAP Buy?
Under the USDA waiver granted to South Carolina, SNAP benefits in the state also cannot be used for candy, energy drinks, soft drinks, or other sweetened beverages. This restriction is specific to South Carolina and the handful of other states that applied for similar waivers.7Office of the Governor, South Carolina. USDA Approves Gov.
