What to Have Ready Before You Call
Staff can pull your record almost instantly if you give them the right identifier up front. For a business entity, know the exact legal name as it is registered and, if you have it, the Business ID number. A missing “LLC” or an abbreviated “Corp” can pull up the wrong file or no file at all; the Business ID cuts through that.
For a charity question, have the organization’s registration number ready. You can get it from the public charity search on the Secretary of State’s website, and giving it to the representative immediately shows whether the organization’s filings are current.
Hold times run longer around the end of the fiscal year and major tax deadlines, when the Business Filings division sees a surge of calls. If your question isn’t urgent, mid-morning on a Tuesday or Wednesday tends to mean shorter waits.
Check Online Before Calling
You may be able to answer your own question through the Secretary of State’s website at sos.sc.gov without calling at all. The office maintains free search tools that pull the same records staff would look at during your call.1South Carolina Secretary of State. South Carolina Secretary of State

Office Address and In-Person Visits
The office is in the Edgar Brown Building at 1205 Pendleton Street, Suite 525, Columbia, SC. In-person hours match the phone hours: 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern, Monday through Friday, closed on state holidays.1South Carolina Secretary of State. South Carolina Secretary of State
Walking in is most useful for delivering original documents that cannot be filed electronically, or for an expedited filing that needs an immediate file stamp. If you are sending documents by overnight mail, make sure the package arrives during business hours; anything delivered after 5:00 p.m. will not be processed until the next business day. For most routine matters, the phone lines and online filing system work faster than a trip to Columbia.
