South Dakota Voter Registration Requirements and Deadlines

To register to vote in South Dakota, you fill out a paper voter registration form, sign it by hand, and deliver it to your county auditor by mail or in person no later than fifteen days before the election. The state does not offer online voter registration. Once your form is processed, you will receive an acknowledgment notice in the mail confirming you are on the rolls.1South Dakota Secretary of State. Who Qualifies

South Dakota law sets four requirements. You must be a United States citizen with sufficient evidence of citizenship, a resident of the precinct where you register, at least eighteen years old on or before the next election, and not otherwise disqualified from voting.2South Dakota Legislature. South Dakota Codified Law 12-4-1 – Persons Entitled to Register – Precinct

Two disqualifications matter in practice. If you are currently serving a sentence for a felony conviction — incarcerated, on parole, or on probation — you cannot register. Once the sentence is fully discharged, eligibility returns automatically; no clemency application is needed. A person who has been declared mentally incompetent by a court is also disqualified.1South Dakota Secretary of State. Register to Vote, Update Voter Registration or Cancel Voter Registration

Residency has a specific definition. You are a resident if you maintain an actual, fixed, permanent dwelling where you live and usually sleep for at least thirty consecutive days, with no present intention of leaving. Temporary absences — travel, deployment, hospitalization — do not break residency as long as you intend to return.3South Dakota Secretary of State. Residency Qualifications for Registering to Vote

What the Form Asks For

The South Dakota Voter Registration Form asks for your full legal name, date of birth, and physical residential address. A P.O. box does not qualify as a residential address, though you can add a separate mailing address if your mail goes somewhere else. You need to provide your South Dakota driver’s license number or nondriver ID number. If you have neither, the last four digits of your Social Security number will do.4South Dakota Secretary of State. South Dakota Voter Registration Form

There is a party affiliation section. Choose a recognized party or leave it blank. A new registrant who leaves it blank is recorded with no party affiliation. If you are already registered and skip the section on a new form, your existing affiliation carries over.4South Dakota Secretary of State. South Dakota Voter Registration Form

You sign under penalty of perjury. The form warns that perjury can result in up to two years in prison and a $4,000 fine, penalties consistent with a Class 6 felony.5South Dakota Legislature. South Dakota Codified Law 22-6 – Classification of Felonies and Misdemeanors Knowingly making a false statement to register or vote is also a Class 1 misdemeanor under election law.6South Dakota Legislature. How to Submit the Form

South Dakota does not accept online, faxed, or emailed registrations. You can fill the form out digitally on the Secretary of State’s website, but you have to print it, sign it in ink, and deliver it.1South Dakota Secretary of State. Your options:

After the auditor processes your application, an acknowledgment notice comes by mail. If something is missing or your eligibility is in question, the notice will explain what to fix, and you have thirty days to respond before the application may go unprocessed.8South Dakota Legislature. South Dakota Codified Law 12-4 – Registration of Voters If no acknowledgment arrives, call your county auditor to confirm the form was received.

The Fifteen-Day Deadline

Your completed form must be in the county auditor’s hands by 5:00 p.m. local time, fifteen days before the election.9South Dakota Legislature. South Dakota Codified Law 12-4-5 – Entry of Applicants in Registration File – Deadline – List for Runoff Election This is a receipt deadline, not a postmark deadline. A form that arrives late is held and processed for a future election. South Dakota has no same-day registration, so a missed deadline means sitting out that election.

If you are submitting through a driver’s license station or another government agency, the same cutoff applies. Those offices have to forward the form to the auditor, so give the mail time to move.

Commercial Mailboxes and Full-Time RV Dwellers

Starting January 1, 2026, a rule change affects anyone who uses only a commercial mail receiving agency, mail forwarding service, or post office box as a residence address. If you register with one of those addresses and do not also describe the physical location where you actually live, the county auditor will designate you a “federal voter.” Federal voters receive a restricted ballot containing only races for president, U.S. senator, and U.S. representative — nothing for state or local offices.10South Dakota Legislature. South Dakota Codified Law 12-4-1.3 Full-time RV dwellers who have historically used South Dakota mailbox services as their legal address are the group most likely to notice. To vote a full ballot, list a physical location where you actually sleep.

Updating or Checking Your Registration

Any change to your name, address, or party affiliation requires a new voter registration form. South Dakota does not use a separate update form; you fill out the same registration form and include your previous information in the prior-registration section.11South Dakota Secretary of State. Registration Changes The submission methods and the fifteen-day deadline are the same. A party affiliation change submitted after the cutoff will not take effect until the next election.1South Dakota Secretary of State. To confirm you are registered, use the Secretary of State’s Voter Information Portal at vip.sdsos.gov. You can look up your current registration, party affiliation, and polling place by entering your first and last name exactly as they appear on your registration, plus either your date of birth or your residential zip code.12South Dakota Secretary of State. Voter Information Portal Checking a few weeks ahead of an election gives you time to fix problems before the registration deadline.

Party Affiliation and Which Primary You Can Vote In

Party affiliation is where the check-box on your form has real consequences. Each major party sets its own primary access rules:

Registering with no party affiliation lets you vote in the Democratic or Libertarian primary but not the Republican primary. In the general election, party affiliation makes no difference; every registered voter receives the same ballot.

Military and Overseas Voters

Active-duty service members, their eligible family members, and U.S. citizens living abroad can use the Federal Post Card Application to register and request an absentee ballot at the same time. The FPCA is available through the Federal Voting Assistance Program at FVAP.gov, and the completed form goes directly to your county auditor.13South Dakota Secretary of State. Military Members The fifteen-day registration deadline still applies. If your FPCA is in but the absentee ballot does not arrive in time, the Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot works as a backup.14Federal Voting Assistance Program. Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot
