The sales tax rate in South Lake Tahoe is 8.75 percent as of 2026. That rate combines California’s 7.25 percent statewide base with 1.5 percent in local taxes approved by city voters, and it applies to most retail purchases made inside city limits.1California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. California City and County Sales and Use Tax Rates The tax follows the location of the sale, not the buyer’s home address, so visitors pay the same rate as residents.
How the Rate Is Built
California sets a 7.25 percent statewide minimum that applies in every city and county. On top of that floor, South Lake Tahoe voters have added local district taxes totaling 1.5 percent.
The largest piece is Measure S, a one-percent general sales tax approved in November 2020. Revenue from Measure S funds general city services including road maintenance, snow removal, wildfire prevention, and emergency response.2City of South Lake Tahoe. Measure S Sales Tax Fiscal Accountability Another half-percent comes from other local district taxes. Together they bring the total to 8.75 percent.
Those local additions stop at the city line. Unincorporated parts of El Dorado County sit at the 7.25 percent statewide minimum.1California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. California City and County Sales and Use Tax Rates On a small purchase the difference is minor; on something expensive, it adds up.
What You Pay Sales Tax On
Sales tax applies to tangible personal property, which California defines as anything you can see, weigh, measure, feel, or touch.3California Legislative Information. California Code Revenue and Taxation Code 6016 Clothing, electronics, furniture, sporting equipment, ski gear, and building materials are all taxable at 8.75 percent when purchased in South Lake Tahoe.
If you buy something from a seller outside the city and bring it in, you owe use tax at the same 8.75 percent rate. Most large online retailers collect it at checkout. Smaller out-of-state sellers may not, leaving you responsible for reporting and paying it yourself.
Repair and Installation Labor
Separately itemized labor for repairs and installation is generally not taxable in California. When a mechanic replaces your brakes and lists parts and labor on separate invoice lines, you pay sales tax on the parts but not the labor.4California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Labor Charges (Publication 108) Nontaxable Charges There is one wrinkle for small jobs. If the retail value of the parts is ten percent or less of the total charge and no separate charge is made for them, the repair shop is treated as the consumer of those materials. The shop pays tax when it buys the parts, and your invoice includes no sales tax at all.
Vehicles
When you buy a car, truck, or other motor vehicle, the use tax rate is based on where you register it, not where you bought it.5California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Tax Guide for Purchasers of Vehicles Register in South Lake Tahoe and you pay 8.75 percent, even if the dealership was in Sacramento or Reno. Dealers usually collect at the point of sale. For a private-party purchase, you pay the use tax to the DMV when you register.

Food purchased for home consumption is generally exempt from sales tax.6California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Sales and Use Tax Exemptions Raw ingredients, packaged foods, and cold deli items you take home are covered. Food sold hot, meals served for on-premises consumption, and food sold at venues that charge admission are not.7California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Lodging Is Taxed Separately
If you’re staying overnight, the 8.75 percent sales tax is not what shows up on your hotel bill. South Lake Tahoe charges a separate transient occupancy tax on short-term lodging: 12 percent of the rent on most properties, and 14 percent on certain properties within the redevelopment project area that were newly constructed or substantially renovated under the redevelopment plan.10City of South Lake Tahoe. Article II: Transient Occupancy Tax This applies only to lodging charges, not to meals or shopping during your stay.
If You’re the One Selling
Any business selling tangible goods in South Lake Tahoe needs a California seller’s permit from the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration before making its first taxable sale.11California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Obtaining a Seller’s Permit There is no fee, though the CDTFA may require a security deposit against potential unpaid taxes.
Online registration asks for your Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer ID, projected monthly sales and projected monthly taxable sales, and information about any officers, members, or partners.12California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Online Services – Registration Have your bank details and supplier names handy. The whole application runs through the CDTFA’s online portal.

Temporary Sellers You can apply up to 90 days ahead and must give specific start and end dates for each location.
Buying an Existing Business
Buyers of an existing South Lake Tahoe business can inherit the previous owner’s unpaid sales tax debt. California law requires buyers to withhold enough of the purchase price to cover the seller’s potential tax liability. Skip that step and you become personally liable for those unpaid taxes up to the full purchase price.14California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Sales and Use Tax Law – Section 6812 The protective move is to request a tax clearance certificate from the CDTFA before closing. The agency has 60 days to issue the certificate or notify you of any outstanding amounts.
Filing Returns
The CDTFA assigns each business a filing frequency based on its taxable sales. Most small businesses file quarterly, higher-volume sellers file monthly, and very small operations may qualify for annual filing.15California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Filing Dates for Sales and Use Tax Returns
- Quarterly returns are due April 30, July 31, October 31, and January 31 for the preceding quarter.
- Monthly returns are due by the last day of the month following the reporting period.
- Annual (calendar year) returns are due January 31 for the preceding year.
When a due date falls on a weekend or state holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day. You still have to file by the deadline even if you had zero sales. Businesses averaging $17,000 or more in monthly taxable sales are placed on a quarterly prepay schedule, with estimated payments due by the 24th of each month in the quarter and a final reconciliation at quarter’s end.
Returns go through the CDTFA’s online portal. Payment options include direct bank withdrawal, credit card (which carries a 2.3 percent processing fee from the vendor), check, or money order.16California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Online Services — Make a Payment Electronic payments must clear before midnight Pacific on the due date, with EFT payments cutting off earlier at 3:00 p.m. Pacific.
Late Filing and Payment
Missing a filing deadline or a payment deadline each triggers a 10 percent penalty on the tax owed. If you’re late on both, the combined penalty is capped at 10 percent rather than stacking to 20 percent.17California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Interest, Penalties, and Collection Cost Recovery Fee (Publication 75) A late quarterly prepayment draws a 6 percent penalty, which rises to 10 percent if the CDTFA finds negligence.
Interest accrues on top of penalties starting the day after the tax is due, calculated monthly using an annual rate set by the Revenue and Taxation Code divided by 12. Interest is rarely waived and keeps running until the balance is paid. Filing on time even when you can’t pay in full avoids the filing penalty and limits your exposure to the payment penalty and interest.
Keep your sales tax records for at least four years: receipts, invoices, resale certificates, purchase records, and anything else used to prepare your returns.18California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. Regulation 1698 If your point-of-sale system overwrites older data, export and preserve it before it rolls off.
Out-of-State and Online Sellers
Following the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2018 decision in South Dakota v. Wayfair, California requires out-of-state sellers with $500,000 or more in gross sales of tangible personal property delivered into California to register and collect sales tax. California does not use a transaction-count threshold. A remote seller with no physical presence in California still collects the 8.75 percent South Lake Tahoe rate on orders shipped to addresses inside city limits.
Marketplace platforms like Amazon, eBay, and Etsy handle collection for third-party sales made through their sites under California’s marketplace facilitator rules. Sellers who run their own websites and meet the $500,000 threshold register and collect on their own.
