The sales tax rate in Sumter County, Florida is 7%. That total combines Florida’s 6% state sales tax with a 1% local discretionary surtax that the county has levied since 1993.1Florida Department of Revenue. Discretionary Sales Surtax Information for Calendar Year 2026 Retailers collect the full 7% at the register and send it to the Florida Department of Revenue, which routes the local share back to the county.
How the Rate Is Built
Florida imposes a 6% state sales tax on the retail sale of most tangible goods and certain services.2The Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 212.05 – Sales, Storage, Use Tax Sumter County adds a 1% discretionary surtax on top of that base under state authority.
The surtax follows the delivery address, not the seller’s location. Order a sofa online and have it shipped to a Sumter County address, and you owe the 1% surtax regardless of where the retailer sits. Motor vehicles and mobile homes work differently: the surtax rate for those is set by the buyer’s home address rather than the point of delivery.3The Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 212.054 – Discretionary Sales Surtax; Limitations, Administration, and Collection
What the 7% Applies To
The 7% rate hits tangible personal property across the board: electronics, furniture, clothing, appliances, household goods, building materials, tools, and the ordinary contents of a hardware store or big-box retailer.
The Short List of Taxable Services
Florida taxes only a handful of services. Nonresidential pest control, nonresidential cleaning, and detective or security services carry the 6% state tax plus the 1% local surtax.4Cornell Law Institute. Florida Administrative Code Rule 12A-1.0161 – Sales and Use Tax on Services; Sale for Resale Most professional services, including legal, accounting, and medical work, are not taxed.
Short-Term Lodging
Renting a hotel room, vacation home, or other living accommodation for six months or less triggers the 6% state tax on the full rental amount.5The Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 212.03 – Transient Rentals Tax The 1% Sumter County surtax applies too, taking the total to 7%, and counties may add tourist development taxes on top of that, so an overnight stay can carry a higher effective rate.
Commercial Rent Is No Longer Taxed
If you lease office, warehouse, or other business real estate in Sumter County, there is now no sales tax on the rent. Florida repealed the state sales tax on commercial real property rentals effective October 1, 2025, and the repeal covers both the 6% state tax and the discretionary surtax for rental periods beginning on or after that date.6Florida Department of Revenue. What Is Exempt
Groceries
Food products for human consumption are exempt. That covers meat, dairy, bread, produce, eggs, cereals, frozen foods, canned goods, and spices.7The Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 212.08 – Sales, Rental, Use, Consumption, Distribution, and Storage Tax; Specified Exemptions Prepared food sold for immediate consumption, such as restaurant meals or deli items served with utensils, does not qualify and is taxed at the full 7%.
Prescription Drugs and Medical Items
Prescription medications are exempt. Certain medical supplies and items used in the practice of medicine by licensed practitioners or healthcare facilities are also outside the tax.8Cornell Law Institute. Florida Administrative Code Rule 12A-1.020 – Licensed Practitioners; Drugs Over-the-counter drugs bought without a prescription are generally taxable.
Agricultural Supplies
Items used directly in agricultural production get broad exemptions. Seeds, seedlings, fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, fencing materials for agricultural land, and animal health products are exempt when the buyer certifies exclusive agricultural use.9Florida Senate. Florida Statutes 212.08 – Sales, Rental, Use, Consumption, Distribution, and Storage Tax; Specified Exemptions That matters in a rural county.
Digital Products and SaaS
Florida does not currently tax software-as-a-service or most digital downloads. A cloud software subscription, a streaming service, or a digital book will not carry the 7% rate.
The $5,000 Cap on Big-Ticket Purchases
The 1% county surtax has a ceiling. It only applies to the first $5,000 of any single item’s purchase price.3The Florida Legislature. Florida Statutes 212.054 – Discretionary Sales Surtax; Limitations, Administration, and Collection Anything above $5,000 on that item is subject only to the 6% state rate.
A worked example. Buy a boat for $30,000 in Sumter County. The 6% state tax applies to the full $30,000, which is $1,800. The 1% surtax applies only to the first $5,000, adding $50. The total comes to $1,850 rather than the $2,100 a flat 7% would produce.10Florida Department of Revenue. Florida’s Discretionary Sales Surtax The same arithmetic applies to vehicles, heavy equipment, and other expensive single items.
One detail that trips people up: the cap is per item, not per transaction. Buy three pieces of furniture in one trip and each one gets its own $5,000 threshold.
Florida Sales Tax Holidays
Florida suspends sales tax on certain purchases during annual tax holidays. The back-to-school holiday is the one most Sumter County shoppers notice. In 2026 it runs from August 1 through August 31 and covers:
- Clothing and footwear priced $100 or less per item
- School supplies priced $50 or less per item
- Learning aids and puzzles priced $30 or less per item
- Personal computers and accessories priced $1,500 or less per item
Both the 6% state tax and the 1% Sumter County surtax are waived on qualifying items during the holiday. Florida typically schedules a separate disaster preparedness holiday earlier in the summer covering generators, batteries, tarps, coolers, and similar supplies. Dates and item limits for that one shift year to year, so check the Florida Department of Revenue’s site ahead of hurricane season.
Online Purchases Shipped to Sumter County
Buy something online and have it shipped to Sumter County and you owe the same 7% as a local register would charge. Florida requires out-of-state retailers with more than $100,000 in taxable sales to Florida customers during the prior calendar year to register, collect, and remit sales tax. There is no separate transaction-count threshold.
Major marketplace platforms, including Amazon, eBay, and Walmart Marketplace, collect and remit the tax on behalf of third-party sellers. Purchases from independent websites that have not reached the $100,000 threshold are the gap: Florida law technically requires you to self-report and pay the tax as use tax, though enforcement against individual consumers is minimal.
A Note for Sellers
A business selling taxable goods or services in Sumter County must register with the Florida Department of Revenue and collect the full 7% from customers. The surtax portion follows the delivery address, so shipments into counties with different surtax rates must be charged at the destination’s rate. Buyers claiming an exemption should provide a signed exemption or resale certificate before the sale, since the burden falls on the seller to produce that documentation during an audit. Supplies bought from out-of-state vendors who did not charge Florida tax carry a 7% use tax obligation at the same rate.
