A Syracuse parking ticket runs from $20 for an expired meter up to $50 or more for violations like blocking a fire hydrant or double parking, and the fine doubles if you don’t pay within 20 days.1City of Syracuse. Parking Violations Bureau Payments and disputes both go through the city’s Municipal Violations Bureau, which also runs the booting program for repeat offenders.2SYR Municipal Violations Bureau Portal. What You Owe
The base fine depends on the violation. Common ones:
- Expired meter: $20
- Fire hydrant: $50
- Double parking: $50
Those are the amounts if you pay on time. Wait too long and any of them can more than quadruple.1City of Syracuse. Parking Violations Bureau
How to Pay
The fastest option is the city’s online portal. Look up your ticket using the 10-digit ticket number, your last name, or your license plate. The portal takes Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, Google Pay, PayPal, and e-check. Card payments carry a 2.75% service fee with a $1.25 minimum; e-checks are a flat $1.25.3City of Syracuse. Pay a Parking Ticket
You can also mail a check or money order (no cash) to the Parking Violations Bureau at 233 East Washington Street, Syracuse, NY 13202. Write the ticket number on the payment. For in-person payment, City Hall Commons at 201 East Washington Street is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM.1City of Syracuse. Parking Violations Bureau
What Happens If You Don’t Pay
Syracuse does not add small, gradual late fees. The penalties stack quickly:
- After 20 days, the original fine doubles.
- After 30 days, an additional $30 is added.
- After 75 days, another $40 is added.

How to Dispute a Ticket
If the ticket was issued in error, you can request a hearing through the city’s online dispute form, by mail, or in person at the bureau. You’ll need your license plate number and state of registration to pull up the ticket.4City of Syracuse. Dispute a Parking Ticket
Submit any photos or other evidence that supports your case. If you’re contesting a ticket for a broken meter, you’ll need a repair receipt or a statement from a service department confirming the meter was malfunctioning.1City of Syracuse. Parking Violations Bureau
File quickly. Because the fine doubles at 20 days, waiting to contest a ticket means risking a larger balance if the hearing goes against you. Once your request is received, the bureau either schedules a hearing or issues a written decision for mail-in reviews.
When It Gets Serious: Booting and Registration Suspension
Three or more unpaid tickets left unsatisfied for over 90 days makes your vehicle eligible for booting or impoundment. The city uses a SmartBoot device, and removal is $150 on top of what you already owe. You can pay the boot removal fee online or in person at the Municipal Violations Bureau.5City of Syracuse. Parking Booting
Fail to return the SmartBoot within 24 hours after it’s released and the city adds $25 per day in late fees, up to $500.5City of Syracuse. Parking Booting
Three or more outstanding parking tickets — or any combination of three or more unpaid parking tickets and traffic violations, excluding seat belt violations — can also trigger a registration suspension through the New York State DMV.1City of Syracuse. Parking Violations Bureau The DMV does not handle parking tickets and tells people not to contact them about them. To clear the suspension, you pay off the tickets through the Syracuse Municipal Violations Bureau, which then notifies the DMV to lift the hold.6New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. If You Can’t Pay the Full Balance
The Municipal Violations Bureau offers payment plans for people who can demonstrate financial hardship. You must appear in person with a valid government-issued photo ID and proof of hardship. These plans can’t be arranged by phone or email. The bureau is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.1City of Syracuse. Parking Violations Bureau
Syracuse also periodically runs amnesty programs that waive accumulated late fees. The most recent one ran from November 3, 2025 through January 2, 2026, letting people pay only the original fine plus the mandatory New York State surcharge, no matter how much the penalties had grown. Tickets as far back as 1997 were eligible, and even booted vehicles qualified, though owners still had to pay the $150 boot fee and the surcharge. If you had tickets on a payment plan, you had to visit the bureau in person to clear each ticket individually. Tickets Issued on the Syracuse University Campus
Tickets issued on the Syracuse University campus are not city tickets. They’re handled by Syracuse University Parking and Transit Services, not the Municipal Violations Bureau. You can’t pay or dispute a university ticket through the city portal, and city tickets don’t go through SU. Check the issuing agency printed on the citation if you’re not sure which you have.1City of Syracuse. Parking Violations Bureau
