What Happened the Night She Died
On November 3, 2018, Horsford attended a birthday slumber party hosted by Jeanne Meyers in north Forsyth County. She knew Meyers through their sons’ youth football league and was the only Black guest among roughly a dozen attendees. Guests drank and played cards. Meyers and her boyfriend Jose Barrera said they went to bed around 1:30 a.m. after Horsford told them she was heading to the back porch to smoke. The home’s security system logged the back door opening at 1:49 a.m., closing at 1:50, and reopening at 1:57, after which it stayed unsecured.2Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office. The autopsy, performed by GBI Associate Medical Examiner Andrew Koopmeiners, documented a broken neck, a subdural hematoma, a laceration to the right ventricle of her heart, a fractured and dislocated right wrist, and cuts to her face, hands, and lower legs.4Forsyth News. Koopmeiners concluded the injuries were consistent with a fall from the balcony, not from ground level. The manner of death was ruled accidental, with acute ethanol intoxication a contributing factor. Why the Ruling Was Disputed
The family’s attorney, Ralph Fernandez, and Horsford’s friends raised concerns that the scene was never properly secured and no items were fingerprinted. No sexual assault kit was collected. No fingernail clippings were taken. The tequila bottle Horsford brought was never tested; the GBI cited a policy against testing substances when the potential suspect is deceased. Witness accounts also shifted. Meyers and Barrera initially said Horsford’s arms were at her sides when they found her, but crime scene photos showed her left arm bent at the elbow. Barrera told a lieutenant on November 7, 2018 that he had moved the arm to check for a pulse. The Xanax in Horsford’s system was also unexplained. Partygoers denied giving her the drug, but the GBI uncovered text messages showing one attendee with a prescription had exchanged the medication with a friend the morning after Horsford’s death. That attendee admitted sharing the drug but denied giving any to Horsford.7Rolling Stone. The Lead Investigator’s Misconduct
Lead investigator Mike Christian resigned from the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office on October 27, 2020, during an Internal Affairs investigation. Investigators found he had shared confidential case information, including crime scene photos, videos, and sensitive personal details, with multiple women he was having extramarital affairs with while on duty.9Atlanta Journal-Constitution. One woman told the GBI that Christian had suspected a fellow officer helped partygoers coordinate their story and worried he would be implicated for others “setting the scene.” Christian denied the claim and called his messages sarcasm.7Rolling Stone. Tamla Horsford Death – GBI Investigation Report Christian had also admitted to Leander Horsford that his initial ground-fall theory was a mistake, saying, “We probably have created part of a mess here… What I should have done probably was keep my mouth shut and not spun theories.”6Rolling Stone. Barrera, a Forsyth County pretrial services officer at the time, was placed on administrative leave in December 2018 and fired two days later after allegations he used his position to access confidential files tied to the investigation in which he was a witness. The 2020 Reopening and the GBI’s Conclusion
The case drew national attention in the summer of 2020 amid broader protests against racial injustice. A Change.org petition calling for Sheriff Ron Freeman’s firing and a reopening of the case collected nearly 650,000 signatures. On June 12, 2020, Sheriff Freeman formally asked the GBI to open an investigation and examine potential new evidence. The GBI agreed six days later.11E! Online. The GBI reviewed the Sheriff’s Office findings and conducted additional interviews. The agency reported finding no new information, and on July 27, 2021, the Forsyth County District Attorney determined that the findings did not support prosecution. As of the most recent reporting in late 2022, the case remained closed with no criminal charges filed against any party.
