Taxes in Idaho: Income, Sales, Property, and Excise

Taxes in Idaho come in four main forms: a flat 5.3% individual income tax, a 6% state sales tax, locally administered property taxes, and excise taxes on things like fuel, tobacco, alcohol, and lodging. Idaho does not impose an estate tax or an inheritance tax. The Idaho State Tax Commission runs most of the system, while county assessors and treasurers handle property.

Individual Income Tax

Idaho taxes individual income at a flat 5.3% on taxable income above $2,500 for single filers and above $5,000 for married couples filing jointly.1Idaho State Legislature. Idaho Code 63-3024 – Individuals Tax and Tax on Estates and Trusts The 5.3% rate took effect January 1, 2025, replacing the previous 5.695% rate as part of ongoing legislative reductions that moved Idaho off its old multi-bracket system.2Idaho State Tax Commission. Whats New for 2025 Income Tax Returns

If you live in Idaho, you owe tax on all of your income, no matter where you earned it. A remote job for an out-of-state employer still counts. Nonresidents only owe Idaho tax on income from Idaho sources, such as wages earned at a job site in the state or rent from Idaho property.3Justia. Idaho Code Title 63 Chapter 30 – Income Tax

Standard Deduction and Who Must File

Idaho conforms to the federal standard deduction, so the state amount matches whatever the IRS sets.2Idaho State Tax Commission. Check if You Need to File a Tax Return You can itemize on your Idaho return instead, but only if you itemized federally.

Residents have to file a state return if they are required to file a federal return or if they owe any Idaho income tax. Nonresidents and part-year residents must file once their Idaho-source gross income passes $2,500 for the year.5Idaho State Legislature. Sales and Use Tax

The statewide sales tax is 6% on most retail goods and some services. When you buy from an out-of-state seller who doesn’t collect Idaho tax, you owe the same 6% as a use tax when you file.6Idaho State Tax Commission. Local Option Taxes

More than 20 Idaho cities, most of them resort or tourism-driven communities like Ketchum, Sun Valley, McCall, and Sandpoint, add a local sales tax on top of the state 6%.7Idaho State Tax Commission. City Sales Taxes Expect a slightly higher total at checkout in those places.

Grocery Credit

Idaho taxes groceries at the full 6%, but a refundable food tax credit offsets some of that. For 2025, the credit is $155 per person. If you keep your grocery receipts and can document the actual sales tax you paid on food, you can claim up to $250 per person instead.8Idaho State Tax Commission. Property Tax

Property tax is local. Your county assessor sets the market value of your land and buildings, and the bill depends on the combined levy rates of the taxing districts covering your property: schools, fire, highways, and the like.9Idaho State Tax Commission. Understanding Property Taxes Two homes assessed at the same value in different parts of the state can produce very different tax bills.

Counties mail bills in November. You can pay the full amount by December 20 or split it, with half due December 20 and the other half due June 20 of the following year.9Idaho State Tax Commission. Understanding Property Taxes Miss either date and late fees kick in.

Homeowner’s Exemption

If you own and live in your home as a primary residence, the homeowner’s exemption removes 50% of the assessed value (plus up to one acre of land) from taxation, capped at $125,000.10Idaho State Tax Commission. Homeowners Exemption On a $200,000 home, that’s the full 50%, or $100,000. On a $350,000 home, the cap limits the exemption to $125,000 rather than $175,000. It doesn’t apply automatically. You have to file for it with your county assessor.

Property Tax Reduction

A separate state program, the Property Tax Reduction, lowers the bill by $250 to $1,500 on your home and up to one acre for qualifying homeowners. To qualify for 2026, you must meet all of these conditions:11Idaho State Tax Commission. Property Tax Reduction

  • Be 65 or older, blind, widowed, disabled, a former prisoner of war or hostage, or a motherless or fatherless child under 18.
  • Have total 2025 income, after subtracting medical expenses, of $39,130 or less.
  • Own and live in an Idaho home as your primary residence before April 15, 2026, with a homeowner’s exemption already on file.

Residents of care facilities and nursing homes can also qualify. Apply through your county assessor’s office.

Appealing an Assessment

If your assessment notice looks too high, start with your county board of equalization during its annual session. If you disagree with the board’s decision, you can appeal to the Idaho Board of Tax Appeals within 30 days of the board’s mailing of its decision, or within 30 days of the board’s failure to act on your case.12Idaho Board of Tax Appeals. Filing Date (Postmark Rule) The filing date follows the post office cancellation mark, not when the Board receives it. Recent comparable sales from your neighborhood are the strongest evidence at any stage.

Excise Taxes

Idaho layers excise taxes on specific products, usually built into the shelf price.

Motor fuel. Gasoline and diesel are taxed at 32 cents per gallon, dedicated to highway construction and maintenance.13Idaho State Legislature. Idaho Code 63-2402 – Imposition of Tax Upon Motor Fuel

Cigarettes and tobacco. Cigarettes are taxed at 57 cents per pack of 20.14Idaho State Tax Commission. Beer and wine. Beer is taxed at $0.15 per gallon. Beer above 5% alcohol by volume is taxed at the wine rate of $0.45 per gallon.16Idaho State Tax Commission. Beer Tax Basics Idaho is a control state for distilled spirits, so the state manages liquor distribution directly rather than taxing private sales per gallon.

Lodging. Hotels, motels, campgrounds, and short-term rentals carry a 2% travel and convention tax that funds the Idaho Travel Council.17Idaho State Tax Commission. Travel and Convention Tax The regular 6% sales tax also applies to lodging, so overnight stays carry at least 8% in state-level taxes before any local add-ons in resort cities.

No Estate or Inheritance Tax

Idaho imposes no estate tax and no inheritance tax. Heirs of an Idaho resident face no state-level tax on what they inherit. Federal estate tax still applies to very large estates (those above the federal exemption, which is over $13 million per person), but that touches a small fraction of households. For most Idaho families, inherited property, retirement accounts, and other assets pass without any state tax.
