TDCJ Contact Visit Approval: Eligibility, Visitor List, and Rules

Getting approved for a TDCJ contact visit takes two parallel tracks: the inmate has to be eligible, and you have to be approved as a visitor. The inmate needs at least 60 days in Texas Department of Criminal Justice custody, a custody classification that permits contact visits, and a clean enough disciplinary record. You need to be added to the inmate’s Visitors List by the inmate, complete a background questionnaire through the TDCJ online scheduler, and pass a relationship check by unit staff. Small mismatches between the inmate’s paperwork and yours are the most frequent cause of delay, so coordinate before you apply.

Is the Inmate Eligible for a Contact Visit

The inmate must complete intake and have been in TDCJ custody for at least 60 days before any contact visit is possible.¹ After that, whether contact is allowed and how often depends on the custody code TDCJ has assigned based on offense history, behavior, and time served.

The main custody codes map to visitation this way:¹

G1, J1, and J2: one contact visit per week.
G2, G3, P2, P3, P6, P7 with SAT 3: one contact visit per week.
G2, G3, P2, P3, P6, P7 with SAT 4 or higher: three contact visits per month.
G4, J4, P4 with no disciplinary convictions in the past year: two contact visits per month.
G4, J4, P4 in any other status: one general (non-contact) visit per week only.
G4 Special Penalty: two general visits per month only.
Outside Trusty, ISF, SAFP, IPTC: one contact visit per week.
Medical, Mental Health, and Intellectually Impaired: visit type and frequency follow the computer-recommended custody level.

An inmate in pre-hearing detention loses contact visitation entirely for the duration of that status and is limited to general visits. If you’re not sure where the person stands, ask them to check whether their record shows a “Y” for contact visitation eligibility in the agency’s system.

How Discipline Affects Approval

A major disciplinary conviction can suspend contact visitation for anywhere from one visit to four months from the date of conviction.¹ During a suspension, general (non-contact) visits still go forward. TDCJ cannot cut off general visitation as a disciplinary punishment, so some form of visit remains available even at the worst.

Getting Yourself on the Visitors List

Approval starts with the inmate, not you. The inmate has to request that your name be added to their Visitors List; visitors cannot add themselves. The only exception is a court-appointed guardian, who can initiate the request.¹ The list is capped at ten names per inmate, not counting minor children.²

Once the inmate submits your name, you fill out a visitor application. Your name, address, and stated relationship must match what the inmate submitted. Any discrepancy can trigger a denial, so compare notes before you send anything.

Setting Up the Online Visitation Portal

TDCJ runs an online scheduler where you register, link to an inmate, and book visits. It’s open to residents of the United States, Canada, and Mexico. To set up your account:³

Go to the TDCJ Online Visitation Scheduler and enter a valid email. Watch for a 7-digit validation code in your inbox, then use it to set a password and finish registering.
Complete the background questionnaire. Every question is required. If prompted, complete the Visitor Profile as well; all fields marked with an asterisk must be filled in.
Click “Add Inmate” from your home page and search by TDCJ or SID number (both are 8 digits). If you don’t know the number, use TDCJ’s public Offender Search. Choose your relationship from the dropdown and click “Request Approval.”

Unit staff verify the relationship after you submit. Your request will show as “pending” until then, and you can’t schedule a visit while it sits in that status.

Criminal History and Former Inmates or Employees

A criminal record isn’t an automatic disqualification. TDCJ weighs the nature of the offense and how much time has passed.¹ Active warrants and prior visitation rule violations will likely lead to a denial. Misrepresenting your relationship or showing false identification can get you removed from the list for good.

Former TDCJ inmates who are not immediate family of the person they want to visit must wait at least 24 months from their release date before applying.¹ Immediate family who are former inmates can visit sooner but need written permission from their parole or supervision officer and must notify the warden before the visit. Former TDCJ employees and contractors have to wait 36 months from their separation date.

What a Contact Visit Looks Like

A contact visit puts you across a table from the inmate with no glass between you. You can embrace and kiss once at the start of the visit and once at the end, and you can hold hands during the visit as long as your hands stay on top of the table where staff can see them.¹ Young children may sit on the inmate’s lap. Otherwise everyone stays seated on their side of the table.

A standard contact visit runs two hours, timed from when both the inmate and the visitors are in the visitation area.¹ Visits happen on Saturdays and Sundays, generally between 8:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., though a few units close at 5:00 p.m.⁴ Check the specific unit’s schedule before you drive out.

TDCJ runs visiting cycles Monday through Sunday, with one visit per cycle normally allowed.¹ Inmates eligible for contact visits can pick which week they want their visit instead of following a fixed rotation. Lockdowns, weather, and security incidents can cancel visits on short notice, so check the TDCJ alerts page the morning of your trip.⁵

Identification, Dress Code, and What You Can Carry In

Every visitor 18 or older must present one original, valid, pictured-and-signed form of ID at check-in. TDCJ accepts:⁶

A state driver’s license.
A state-issued DPS identification card.
An Armed Forces ID card.
A passport.
A U.S. Department of Homeland Security or USCIS identification card, such as a Visa Border Crossing Card.

Photocopies are not accepted; the ID has to be the original and it has to be valid. Children 17 and younger may be asked for ID if their age isn’t obvious. A birth certificate, state-issued ID, or student ID all work for minors.

Each adult visitor may bring in a small wallet, clear plastic zip-type bag, or change purse, plus up to $35 in coins for vending machines and one debit or credit card.¹ Everything else stays in your car. Cell phones, cameras, food, tobacco, and large bags are prohibited. You and your vehicle can be searched on arrival.

Dress code refusals at the gate are common. The rules:

No tight-fitting, revealing, or see-through clothing.
Sleeveless shirts and dresses are allowed but must cover the shoulders.
Shorts and skirts must be no shorter than three inches above the middle of the knee while standing.
No all-white outfits.
No clothing with profane or offensive language or imagery.
Sandals, flip-flops, and open-toe shoes are fine.
Hats are permitted but will be searched.

The duty warden has the final call. Units are supposed to offer a paper gown as an alternative if you’re turned away, but it’s not a good backup plan. Children 10 and younger are exempt from the length restrictions.

Bringing Minor Children

Children 17 and younger must be accompanied by an adult who is on the inmate’s approved Visitors List.¹ There’s one narrow exception: a 16- or 17-year-old visiting a parent or legal guardian can visit alone with advance written approval from the warden, which must be brought to the unit on the day of the visit.

If the inmate was convicted of a sexual offense against a child or an offense causing bodily injury to a child where the victim was under 18, contact visits with any child under 18 are prohibited. The only exception is when the inmate is the legally recognized parent of the child and that child was not the victim, and even then the legal guardian must complete a Child Victim Restriction Affidavit before the visit.¹

Long-Distance Options

If you live 250 or more miles from the inmate’s unit (measured one way using Google Maps), you qualify to request special visit accommodations.⁷ Two options exist:¹

An extended visit of up to four hours instead of the usual two, subject to the warden’s discretion and available space.
A special visit of up to eight total hours spread over two consecutive days, with a maximum of four hours per day. Only one special visit is granted per month, and approval is unlikely if you’ve already visited more than once that month.

Special visits can be contact or general, depending on the inmate’s eligibility. The duty warden decides based on space and time. Call the unit ahead of your trip to confirm.

Appealing a Denial or Removal

If you’re removed from an inmate’s Visitors List, you can submit a written appeal to the Director’s Review Committee at PO Box 99, Huntsville, TX 77342.⁸ The appeal must reach the DRC within 14 days of the date printed on your written removal notice. Miss that window and your appeal rights are gone, so act on the letter when it arrives.

Explain clearly why the removal was wrong and include any supporting documentation. Common grounds are incorrect criminal history matches, clerical errors on the application, or misidentification. If the removal followed a rule violation during a previous visit, the appeal is harder to win, but it’s still worth filing when you have a legitimate explanation.
