The Illinois TeleServe phone number is (312) 338-4337. It is an automated touch-tone line run by the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) that lets you certify for unemployment benefits, check the status of a claim, and request a copy of your Form 1099-G. The line is open Monday through Friday from 3:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and is closed on state holidays.1Illinois Department of Employment Security. Teleserve
What TeleServe Can and Cannot Do
TeleServe is automated. You will not reach a person on this line. It handles the routine tasks that make up most of the unemployment claim cycle: biweekly certification, checking whether a payment has been processed, and requesting your annual 1099-G tax form.1Illinois Department of Employment Security. Anything that needs a human, including eligibility disputes, account problems, and PIN resets, goes through the IDES Claimant Services Center at (800) 244-5631.2Illinois Department of Employment Security. Contact IDES
Certifying Online Instead
IDES recommends online certification over TeleServe.2Illinois Department of Employment Security. Contact IDES You can certify at benefits.ides.illinois.gov during the same 3:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. window. One practical reason to use the website: online certification is available on your assigned certification day even when that day falls on a holiday. TeleServe only operates on regular weekday business days.3Illinois Department of Employment Security. Certify for Benefits
The online system requires an ILogin account. All new and existing claimants need one to sign in.
What to Have Ready Before You Call
Gather this information before dialing. Errors during the call can delay your payment.
- Your Social Security Number, entered through the phone keypad.
- Your four-digit PIN, which you create the first time you use the system. If you have forgotten it, call the Claimant Services Center at (800) 244-5631 to reset it.4Illinois Department of Employment Security. Password and Login Assistance
- Your total gross wages for the certification period being reported. Gross means the full amount before taxes and deductions. Add together earnings from every employer if you worked more than one job.
- A record of your work search activities and whether you were able to work and available for work during the period. Illinois law requires claimants to be able and available for work as a condition of receiving benefits.5Illinois General Assembly. 820 ILCS 405 – Unemployment Insurance Act
Keep your pay stubs and a written log of job search contacts nearby. If IDES ever audits your claim, those records are what you will rely on.
How the Call Works
After dialing, the system asks you to select a language, then presents a main menu with options for certification, claim status, and other services. Choose certification, then enter your Social Security Number and PIN when prompted.
Once you are verified, the system asks a sequence of eligibility questions. Answer each one by pressing the corresponding key on your phone. Listen to the entire prompt before pressing anything. Answering too early can register the wrong response.1Illinois Department of Employment Security. Teleserve
Stay on the line until you hear a verbal confirmation that your certification was accepted. If the call drops earlier, the certification may not have gone through, and you will need to call back. Note the date and time of your call in case a question comes up later about whether you certified on time.
If You Miss Your Certification Day
IDES assigns each claimant a specific weekday to certify. If you miss it, Thursdays and Fridays are the make-up days.3Illinois Department of Employment Security. Certify for Benefits Miss both your assigned day and the make-up window, and benefits for that period may not be paid. Repeated failures to certify signal to IDES that you are no longer claiming, and your claim can go inactive.
When Your Payment Arrives
After a successful certification, timing depends on the payment method you selected when you filed your initial claim.
- Direct deposit typically arrives within two to three business days. IDES encourages this option as the fastest.6Illinois Department of Employment Security. UI Benefit Timeline
- Paper checks can take up to eight days after certifying, and this is the default if you did not choose direct deposit.6Illinois Department of Employment Security. UI Benefit Timeline
You can switch to direct deposit through your ILogin account. You can also call TeleServe to check the status of a pending payment.
Requesting Your 1099-G and Withholding Taxes
Unemployment benefits are taxable federal income under 26 USC 85, so you owe federal income tax on every dollar you receive.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 85 – Unemployment Compensation You can ask IDES to withhold 10 percent of each payment for federal tax by submitting Form BPP009F, the Income Tax Withholding Election.8Illinois Department of Employment Security. Income Tax Withholding Election Ten percent may not cover your full liability, so setting aside additional funds is worth considering if you expect to collect for a while.
IDES issues Form 1099-G by the end of January, showing benefits paid in the previous year. You can request the form through TeleServe or download it from your ILogin account.1Illinois Department of Employment Security. Teleserve
Why Accurate Answers Matter
Every certification question, including the one about earnings, should be answered honestly. If IDES later determines you received benefits you were not eligible for, the agency will recover the overpayment and can deduct up to 25 percent of your weekly benefit amount from future payments until the debt is paid.9Illinois General Assembly. 820 ILCS 405/900 – Recovery of Benefits Paid Knowingly providing false information can lead to criminal prosecution and permanent loss of future eligibility.10Illinois Department of Employment Security.
