Tennessee Change of Address: License, Vehicle, and Voter Updates

A Tennessee change of address is not one update but several. State law gives you ten days to notify the Department of Safety and Homeland Security of your new address, and your vehicle registration, voter registration, mail forwarding, and federal records each move through a different office on its own timeline. Handle them in the right order and none of it is complicated; skip one and you can miss a renewal notice, a tax document, or your polling place.

The Ten-Day Rule for Your Driver License

Tennessee Code ยง 55-50-333 requires anyone who holds or has applied for a driver license to notify the department within ten days of moving from the address on file.1Justia. Tennessee Code 55-50-333 – Change of Address The clock starts the day you move. The statute does not spell out a specific fine, but an outdated address means renewal notices and court mailings go to the wrong place, and it can raise questions during a traffic stop.

How to Update Your Driver License Address

The Department of Safety offers three ways to report the change. The online option is free.

Online Through e-Services

The state’s e-Services portal lets you update your address at no charge. Choose “Change your address ONLY,” which updates internal records but does not send you a new physical card. Have your full name, date of birth, driver license number, Social Security number, old address, new address, and new county ready.2Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security. At a Self-Service Kiosk

Kiosks at Driver Services Centers walk you through the address change on screen. If you want a card that shows the new address, you can start a second transaction at the kiosk to order a duplicate or, if you are inside your renewal window, renew.2Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security. By Mail

Pick up a Change-of-Address Form at any Driver Services Center, or write a letter with the same information listed above, and mail it to:

Getting a New Card With the Updated Address

None of the three methods produces a new plastic card on its own. Your existing license still shows the old address until you order a duplicate. The fees:

  • First regular license duplicate: $8
  • Subsequent regular license duplicates: $12
  • First commercial driver license duplicate: $12
  • Subsequent commercial driver license duplicates: $163Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security. Replacing a Lost License

Order the duplicate through e-Services or at a kiosk. The card ships to your updated address.

Updating Your Vehicle Registration

Vehicle records are handled by your local County Clerk, not the Department of Safety. You will need your license plate number and vehicle identification number to pull up the registration.4Tennessee County Clerk. Davidson County Some counties accept online changes; others require an in-person visit with proof of your new address. Shelby County, for instance, does not allow online changes and requires two acceptable proofs of residency at a clerk location.5Shelby County, TN. Address Changes Call your county clerk before you drive over.

A cross-county move takes more work. Tennessee counties set their own wheel taxes, which range from about $10 to $100. You may need to pay the wheel tax in your new county and receive a new county name strip for your plate. Keeping the registration current also matters for property tax assessments and for renewal notices.

Updating Your Voter Registration

What you do depends on whether you stayed in the same county.

Same County

A move within one county is a simple update. Submit it through the state’s Online Voter Registration System, mail or email a signed change-of-address form to your County Election Commission, or stop by the commission office.6Tennessee Secretary of State. How to Update Your Voter Registration

Different County

A cross-county move is not an update. Your registration does not transfer. You must file a brand-new voter registration in the new county, either online or by mailing a paper application to that county’s election commission. The standard deadlines apply, so register at least thirty days before an election to vote in it. If you registered by mail, you are required to vote in person at your first election in the new county, even if you voted in another Tennessee county for years.6Tennessee Secretary of State. After processing, you should receive a voter notification card confirming your polling place. Check it well before election day.

Forwarding Your Mail Through USPS

State agency updates do not redirect mail from banks, insurers, doctors, or anyone else using your old address. A change of address filed with the U.S. Postal Service covers that gap. The fastest route is a permanent change of address at moversguide.usps.com, which charges a $1.25 identity verification fee to a credit or debit card.7USPS. Standard Forward Mail The billing address on the card must match either your old or new address.

USPS forwards first-class mail for a limited period, and you can pay for an extended forwarding period. A temporary forward can run from 15 days up to one year.7USPS. Standard Forward Mail File early. Forwarding takes a few days to activate, and anything mailed in that gap still lands at your old address.

Notifying Federal Agencies

State updates do not reach the IRS or Social Security Administration.

IRS

File Form 8822 to report your new home address. It asks for your old address, new address, and signature. Do not attach it to a tax return; mail it separately. Tennessee residents send completed forms to the Department of the Treasury, Internal Revenue Service, Kansas City, MO 64999-0023. Processing takes about four to six weeks. If your last return was joint, your spouse must also sign unless you are establishing a separate residence. Children who have filed their own returns each need a separate Form 8822.8Internal Revenue Service. Form 8822 Change of Address

Social Security Administration

If you receive Social Security benefits, update your mailing address by signing in to your my Social Security account or by calling 800-772-1213 (TTY 800-325-0778), Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. The online option is available only if you are already receiving benefits, and some benefit types require a phone call.9Social Security Administration. Other Records Worth Updating

Your auto insurance carrier needs the new address because premiums factor in where you live, and failing to report a move can give the insurer grounds to dispute a claim. Call as soon as you have the new address.

Banks, credit card companies, and your employer’s payroll department should get the update so W-2s, 1099s, and account notices reach you. If you hold a professional or occupational license from a Tennessee state board, check whether that board requires its own address notification. Many do, and the deadlines vary by profession.
