Financial Statement
Every renewal requires a financial statement. If your monetary limit is $1,500,000 or less, you can prepare it yourself. General Liability Insurance
Tennessee requires proof of current general liability coverage with the renewal. The minimum tracks your monetary limit: $100,000 in coverage for limits of $500,000 or less (and for all home improvement contractors), $500,000 in coverage for limits between $500,001 and $1,500,000, and $1,000,000 in coverage for limits above $1,500,000. The insurer must be authorized to do business in Tennessee.6Legal Information Institute. Workers’ compensation is also required for contractors with employees.7Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance. Surety Bond
Home improvement contractors must keep a $10,000 surety bond in force for the benefit of consumers damaged by a breach of contract. Business Records and Qualifying Agent
The Board also expects a current county or municipal business license, an active Tennessee Secretary of State registration if you operate as a corporation, LLC, or partnership, and a qualifying agent on file who meets the Board’s experience and examination requirements.10Commerce and Insurance Customer Service Center. Ownership changes of 50% or more must be reported to the Board in writing, either through the CORE online system or by email. How to Submit
Renewals go through the CORE online portal or by mail. Online submission is faster and does not require notarization. Incomplete applications get rejected, and the back-and-forth eats into your renewal window, so confirm the financial statement, insurance certificates, bond documentation, and any ownership updates are all attached before you submit.
What Happens if You Let It Expire

The financial exposure goes past the late fee. A contractor working on an expired license may lose the right to recover money owed on a project and may not be able to file a mechanic’s lien.3Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance. Contracting without a valid license is a Class A misdemeanor. The Board can also assess civil penalties up to $5,000 per offense against anyone who violates license terms or contracts without a license, and it can issue citations carrying civil penalties between $50 and $1,000 for working without a license, exceeding a monetary limit, or working outside a licensed classification. A contractor caught working unlicensed can be barred from receiving a license for six months and prohibited from being awarded any contract on the project where the violation occurred.14Justia Law. Reinstatement After 12 Months
Once a license has been expired more than 12 months, renewal is no longer an option and you must apply for reinstatement. The reinstatement fee is $250, on top of the late fees accumulated during the first 12 months.4TN.GOV. Reinstatement applications get closer review than routine renewals. If you contracted while your license was expired, expect questions about that activity. The Board weighs past violations and current financial standing, and approval is not guaranteed. The longer the lapse, the more likely additional steps will be required before the license is restored.
