Tennessee Real ID Requirements: Documents, Residency, and Fees

To get a Real ID in Tennessee, you need to visit a full-service Driver Services Center in person with four things: one document proving U.S. citizenship or legal presence, one document showing your full Social Security number, two documents proving your Tennessee street address, and certified copies of any legal name changes since birth. The Tennessee Real ID requirements have been enforced at airport security and federal buildings since May 7, 2025, so a standard license marked “NOT FOR REAL ID ACT PURPOSES” no longer gets you on a plane.¹

Every document must be an original or a certified copy. Photocopies and home printouts will be rejected at the counter.

Proof of Citizenship or Legal Presence

U.S. citizens bring one of these:

An official U.S. birth certificate issued by a state or U.S. territory vital records office, with a raised or colored seal. Hospital souvenir certificates do not count.
A valid, unexpired U.S. passport or passport card.
A Certificate of Naturalization (Form N-550, N-570, or N-578).

Birth certificates from Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, and other U.S. territories are treated the same as state-issued certificates.¹

If You Are Not a U.S. Citizen

Lawful permanent residents can present a Permanent Resident Card (I-551), a foreign passport stamped “Processed for I-551,” or a Reentry Permit (I-327). Refugees and asylees can bring an I-94 stamped with their status.

Non-citizens with temporary legal status generally need a valid foreign passport with a valid visa and attached I-94, or an Employment Authorization Card (I-766). F-1 and M-1 students should also bring a valid SEVIS I-20; J-1 exchange visitors need their DS-2019. If the foreign passport is not in English, bring an English translation.¹

The Social Security and residency requirements below apply the same way regardless of citizenship.

Proof of Your Social Security Number

Bring one document that shows your full Social Security number. Acceptable options include the Social Security card itself, a W-2 or 1099 dated within the last 12 months, or a payroll check stub. A W-2 older than a year will not be accepted.¹

If you have never been issued a Social Security number, you can sign a sworn affidavit at the Driver Services Center or in front of a notary.

Two Proofs of Tennessee Residency

You need two separate documents showing your name and current Tennessee street address. A P.O. box will not satisfy this. Unless a document type says otherwise, each proof must be dated within the last four months. Accepted documents include:

A current utility bill (electric, water, gas, landline phone, or cable).
A current bank statement. An internet-printed statement counts only if it has been stamped and dated by a teller at your local branch. Checks and checkbook covers do not count.
An unexpired Tennessee vehicle registration or title. You can use one of these, but not both.
A mortgage contract, receipt, or deed of sale.
An unexpired auto, life, or health insurance policy. Wallet cards are not accepted.
A Tennessee voter registration card.
A receipt for personal property or real estate taxes paid within the last 12 months.
A current paycheck or work ID badge showing your residential address.
An employer verification letter on company letterhead with an original or notarized signature.

A rental lease can serve as one of your two proofs only if you also bring a signed letter from your landlord dated within the last 30 days. You still need a second document from the list.¹

Minors, Students, and Dependents

If you do not have utilities or bank statements in your own name, a valid Tennessee driver license or ID belonging to a parent, legal guardian, or spouse counts as one of the two residency proofs.

College students living on campus can pair a photo student ID with documentation from the Dean or Bursar’s Office confirming on-campus residence. Students living off campus use the standard list.¹

Name-Change Documents

If your current legal name differs from the name on your birth certificate or citizenship document, you must bring certified copies of every legal document that traces the change from your birth name to your name today. Marriage certificates, divorce decrees, and court orders for legal name changes all qualify.

Tennessee’s own worked example: Jane Smith married and became Jane Doe, divorced and reverted to Jane Smith, then married again and became Jane Johnson. She would need her birth certificate, her first marriage certificate, her divorce decree, and her second marriage certificate. Each document has to link to the next so the examiner can follow the whole chain.¹

This is the requirement that catches people out. If you were married decades ago and no longer have the paperwork, order certified replacements from the county or state where the event occurred before you head to the Driver Services Center.

Where and How to Apply

Your first Real ID must be issued in person at a full-service Tennessee Driver Services Center. County clerk offices generally handle license renewals and replacements rather than new Real ID applications, so use the search tool on the Tennessee Driver Services locations page and confirm the location lists “Real ID” and “New Application” among its services.²

Booking through the state’s Online Ticketing System is strongly recommended. Not every location offers appointments, so check when you search, and have an email address and phone number ready. Arrive at least 15 minutes early. If you show up late, your appointment may be cancelled and you will be treated as a walk-in.²

At the counter, an examiner reviews your documents, takes your photograph, collects your signature, and runs a vision screening. There is no written knowledge test or road test if you already hold a valid Tennessee driver license.¹

What It Costs

A Real ID costs the same as a standard Tennessee license. If you are inside your renewal window, the total is $28 for an eight-year credential: a $26 license fee plus a $2 application fee.³

If you want a Real ID before your renewal is due, you pay a duplicate fee instead: $8 for a first duplicate or $12 for a second or subsequent duplicate, depending on license class.⁴ County clerk offices that process license transactions add a $4 administrative fee on top of the state fee.³

After You Apply

You leave the Driver Services Center with a paper interim credential. The permanent card, marked with the Real ID star, arrives by mail in 10 to 20 days at the address on your application.

Once you hold a Real ID, later renewals and duplicates do not require another in-person visit with the full document stack. You can renew online, at a self-service kiosk, at a county clerk office, or by mail.¹

How to Tell if Your Current License Is Already a Real ID

A compliant Tennessee license or ID card carries a black circle with a star in the upper right corner. If the front of your card reads “NOT FOR REAL ID ACT PURPOSES,” it is a standard credential and will not be accepted for boarding domestic flights or entering federal facilities.¹

If You Would Rather Skip the Real ID

A Real ID is not the only way through airport security. TSA also accepts a valid U.S. passport or passport card, a military ID, a permanent resident card, a DHS trusted traveler card such as Global Entry, NEXUS, or SENTRI, and certain tribal IDs. Digital IDs through Apple, Google, and Clear are being piloted at select checkpoints.⁵ If you already travel with a passport and do not visit federal buildings, upgrading is a convenience rather than a requirement.
