The Texas 34th Congressional District covers the southern tip of the state, running from the mouth of the Rio Grande up the Gulf Coast and inland through the ranch country north of Kingsville. It is represented by Democrat Vicente Gonzalez, and its current boundaries will be used for the 2026 elections after the U.S. Supreme Court stayed a lower court order that would have blocked the map.1Supreme Court of the United States. Which Counties and Cities Are In the District
The district takes in all of Cameron, Willacy, Kenedy, and Kleberg counties, plus the eastern portion of Hidalgo County.2Representative Gonzalez. About Its southern and western edges follow the Rio Grande along the U.S.-Mexico border, and its eastern edge is the Gulf of Mexico, giving it more than 100 miles of coastline including South Padre Island.
Brownsville, at the southern tip, is the largest city. Harlingen sits about 30 miles northwest and functions as a healthcare and transportation hub. The Hidalgo County portion brings in part of the McAllen-Edinburg-Mission metro area, one of the fastest-growing regions in Texas. Kingsville, in Kleberg County to the north, is home to Texas A&M University-Kingsville and the King Ranch.

Who Lives Here
The district has a population of roughly 796,178, and about 90% of residents identify as Hispanic or Latino, one of the highest shares of any congressional district in the country.4Census Reporter. Incomes trail the rest of Texas. Median household income sits around $54,486, roughly two-thirds of the statewide median of $79,721.4Census Reporter. Current Representative and District Offices
Vicente Gonzalez, a Democrat, represents the 34th District and is serving his fifth overall term in the U.S. House.2Representative Gonzalez. Gonzalez keeps three district offices for constituent services: in Brownsville, Weslaco, and Kingsville.6Representative Gonzalez. Recent Elections and the 2026 Outlook
The 34th has been one of the most closely contested seats in Texas since redistricting. In June 2022, Republican Mayra Flores won a special election to fill the vacancy left by former Rep. Filemon Vela, who resigned. That race was run under the old district lines, which were more favorable to Republicans than the redrawn map.
Gonzalez won the November 2022 general election under the new boundaries. In 2024, he beat Flores in a rematch with about 51.3% of the vote to her 48.7%, a margin of roughly 5,200 votes. The Cook Political Report rated the district R+3 as of late 2025, meaning it leans slightly Republican in presidential voting even though the Democratic incumbent has held on. Both parties are expected to spend heavily here again in 2026.
Redistricting and the Legal Fight Over the Map
The 2020 Census gave Texas two additional congressional seats, bringing the total to 38. The legislature passed a new congressional map, designated PLANC2193, in October 2021, and it reshaped the 34th District significantly.7Texas Redistricting. History – Texas Redistricting
The map was challenged almost immediately. The League of United Latin American Citizens and other plaintiffs sued in October 2021, alleging violations of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and the Fourteenth Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause. In November 2025, the federal district court in El Paso entered an order that would have blocked use of the current map for the 2026 elections. Texas appealed, and on December 4, 2025, the U.S. Supreme Court granted a stay. The existing boundaries stay in force for 2026 while the appeal proceeds.1Supreme Court of the United States. Abbott v. What Drives the Local Economy
The 34th’s economy runs on cross-border trade, energy, aerospace, and healthcare. Its position on the Mexican border feeds warehousing, customs brokerage, and trucking. Citrus farming and cattle ranching still matter in the rural stretches.
Three developments have reshaped the outlook in recent years. The Port of Brownsville, the only deepwater seaport directly on the U.S.-Mexico border, handled more than 28 million tons of cargo in 2024, and an economic impact study estimated it generated $12 billion in total economic activity in 2023.9Port of Brownsville. County officials estimated SpaceX put more than $13 billion into Cameron County’s economy between 2024 and 2026 and supported more than 24,000 direct and indirect jobs.
On the institutional side, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, with campuses in Brownsville, Edinburg, and Harlingen, opened Spring 2026 as the only university in Texas with both a School of Medicine and a School of Podiatric Medicine.11UTRGV.
