To complete a Texas driver’s license name change, update your name with the Social Security Administration first, then visit a Texas Department of Public Safety office in person within 30 days of the legal change with your marriage license, divorce decree, or court order, a completed Form DL-14A, and the $11 replacement fee. There is no online option. Skipping the Social Security step is the single most common reason people get turned away at the DPS counter.
Start at Social Security, Not DPS
Every time DPS processes a license transaction, it verifies your Social Security number electronically against the federal record. If the name on that record doesn’t match the name you’re asking DPS to put on your license, the system rejects the application at the counter. That is why the SSA has to go first.
To update your SSA record, complete Form SS-5 and bring original documents proving both your identity and the name change. Your current Texas license works for identity, and the marriage license, divorce decree, or court order that triggered the change works for the name update. The SSA accepts only originals or copies certified by the issuing agency. Photocopies and notarized copies are rejected.1Social Security Administration. Application for a Social Security Card Your originals come back after processing.
Then wait. Give the federal database 24 to 48 hours to sync before you go to DPS. Same-day trips usually fail the electronic verification.
Documents DPS Accepts as Proof of the Name Change
DPS accepts five categories of name-change documents. Each must be an original or a certified copy from the issuing agency. Photocopies are not accepted, and certified documents should not be laminated.2Department of Public Safety. Identification Requirements
- Marriage license, original or certified copy from the county clerk.
- Divorce decree containing a formal order restoring or assigning the new name.
- Court-ordered name change signed by the judge.
- Revised birth certificate, original or certified copy, showing the new name.
- Marriage verification letter from the Texas Department of State Health Services.
If any document isn’t in English, bring a certified English translation alongside the original.3Department of Public Safety. How to Change Information on Your Driver License or ID Card The document must clearly link your old name to your new one. If you’ve been through more than one name change, bring the paperwork that traces the sequence.
Filling Out Form DL-14A
DPS uses a single application, Form DL-14A, for name changes, renewals, replacements, and original licenses.4Texas Department of Public Safety. Texas Driver License or Identification Card Application Download it from the DPS site or grab one at the office. At the top, select “Address or Name Change.” Enter your current license number, your previous name exactly as it reads on the card, and your new legal name exactly as it appears on the supporting document.
Question 2 asks whether you want to register to vote or update an existing registration. Checking yes tells DPS to forward your new name to the Secretary of State, which spares you a separate voter registration update. Voter rolls need to reflect your current legal name, so this is the easy time to handle it.
Fill out the form in black or blue ink, but don’t sign it. You’ll sign at the counter with a DPS employee witnessing.
The DPS Visit
Driver license services are by appointment only. Book through the DPS appointment portal. If you walk in without one, a self-service kiosk will schedule you, either for the same day if slots are open or for a future date.5Department of Public Safety. Driver License Services – Appointments A limited number of same-day slots open through the day, so arriving early at a quieter office helps.
At the counter, hand over your DL-14A and your name-change document. Staff will electronically verify your Social Security number, take a new photo, and capture a thumbprint. The fee is $11 for a standard license, a commercial driver license, or an ID card.6Department of Public Safety. Driver License Fees The expiration date on your license doesn’t change; this is a replacement, not a renewal.
What You Leave With, and When the Card Arrives
You’ll walk out with a paper temporary permit valid for 45 days. Keep it on you when you drive; it’s your legal license until the plastic card shows up. The permanent card arrives by mail in two to three weeks.7Department of Public Safety. Apply for a Texas Driver License
If nothing has arrived after three weeks, confirm the mailing address DPS has on file. Address changes are also subject to the 30-day update rule, so if you moved recently, take care of both at the same visit.
If You Miss the 30-Day Deadline
Driving on a license that shows your old name past 30 days is a citable offense under Texas Transportation Code 521.054.8State of Texas. Texas Transportation Code 521.054 – Notice of Change of Address or Name A court can dismiss the charge if you complete the update within 20 working days of the offense and pay a reimbursement fee of up to $20. The judge can waive even that fee in the interest of justice.
The bigger costs of an outdated license are practical. A mismatched name can slow a traffic stop, complicate an insurance claim, and create friction with banks, airlines, and employers who verify identity against your license.
A Few Things This Doesn’t Cover
Your vehicle title and registration are handled by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, not DPS, and updating your license does not update your title. To fix the name on a vehicle, file Form 130-U at your county tax assessor-collector’s office with your name-change document and current title, selecting “Other” and noting the name change.9Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Detailed Instructions for Application for Texas Title and/or Registration A corrected title fee applies; call your county office for the exact amount.
If you’re not a U.S. citizen, DPS also has to verify your lawful presence through the Department of Homeland Security before it can issue the new card, using documents like a valid Permanent Resident Card, Employment Authorization Document, or foreign passport with a valid I-94. DPS lists the full set of acceptable documents by immigration status; call ahead if you’re unsure which applies to your situation.10Department of Public Safety. U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Presence Requirement
Finally, if you want a REAL ID-compliant card, look for a gold star in the upper-right corner of your current license. Since May 7, 2025, a REAL ID or another federally accepted ID has been required for domestic flights and entry to certain federal buildings.11Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID Getting the compliant card requires proof of identity, date of birth, Social Security number, lawful status, and Texas residency.12Department of Public Safety. Federal Real ID Act If your current card already carries the star, you’re only replacing it; bring residency documents anyway, because staff sometimes ask.
