Texas does not impose a property tax on vehicles. Unlike roughly half the states, which bill owners every year based on a car’s assessed value, Texas collects a one-time 6.25% motor vehicle sales tax when you buy the car and then charges flat annual registration fees that don’t change with the vehicle’s value. Own an older paid-off car in Texas and your yearly cost to the state is under a hundred dollars for most passenger vehicles.
What You Pay When You Buy
The 6.25% motor vehicle sales tax applies to every retail sale, whether you buy from a dealer or a private party.1State of Texas. For dealer purchases, the tax is calculated on the sale price, reduced by the value of any trade-in. Private-party sales work differently. Texas uses a Standard Presumptive Value (SPV) drawn from regional sales data for your make, model, and year. If you paid at least 80% of the SPV, tax is based on your actual price. If you paid less than 80%, tax is based on 80% of the SPV instead, unless you obtain a certified appraisal showing the lower value is accurate.3Comptroller of Public Accounts. Standard Presumptive Value (SPV) on Private-Party Transactions
A vehicle gifted between eligible family members carries a flat $10 tax rather than the 6.25%.4Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Gift Tax – Motor Vehicle Tax Guide Even exchanges between two parties are taxed at $5.
Deadline matters. On a private-party purchase, you have 30 calendar days from the date of sale to pay. After that, the county adds a 5% penalty, which doubles to 10% once you cross 60 days.5Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Penalty on Late Tax Payment – Motor Vehicle Tax Guide

If You Just Moved to Texas
New residents have 30 days to register their vehicles here. Penalties apply for late registration.12Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. New to Texas You’ll need a Texas insurance policy first, then bring the following to your county tax office:
- Proof of Texas vehicle insurance
- Your out-of-state title or registration receipt
- A completed Application for Texas Title and/or Registration (Form 130-U)
- A government-issued photo ID
The tax owed depends on your history with the vehicle. If it was already titled and registered in your name in another state, you owe a flat $90 new resident tax rather than the 6.25%.12Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. New to Texas If it wasn’t previously in your name, the full 6.25% use tax applies, with credit given for sales or use tax already paid to another state. Vehicles registered in an emissions county still need a passing emissions test before registration can be completed.8Department of Public Safety. How This Compares to Property-Tax States
In states that tax vehicles as personal property, you pay a percentage of the car’s assessed value every year. The bill shrinks as the car depreciates but never disappears. Annual assessments on a $25,000 vehicle can run from about $25 in low-rate states to more than $1,000 in Virginia, where the effective vehicle tax rate tops 4%. Texas skips that model. You pay the state once at purchase, then a flat registration bill after that, which is why long-term ownership costs in Texas stay low regardless of what the car is worth.
