The Texas RV sales tax is 6.25% of the purchase price, and it applies to motorhomes, travel trailers, and fifth wheels alike because Texas classifies all of them as motor vehicles.1Cornell Law Institute. 34 Texas Administrative Code 3.80 – Motor Vehicles Transferred as a Gift or for No Consideration The rate is the same whether you buy from a dealer or a private seller, though the way the taxable amount is calculated differs. A few flat-rate alternatives replace the percentage in specific situations: gifts between family, new residents bringing an RV into the state, and even exchanges.
If you buy the RV in another state and bring it into Texas, you still owe the same 6.25% as a use tax, minus a credit for any sales tax you already paid to the other state.2State of Texas. Texas Tax Code Section 152.022 – Tax on Motor Vehicle Purchased Outside This State Pay 4% elsewhere, and Texas collects the remaining 2.25%.3Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. How the Taxable Amount Is Calculated
At a dealer, the math is direct: 6.25% of the sale price. A trade-in reduces the taxable amount to the difference between the new RV’s price and the trade-in allowance, and that allowance is based on the trade vehicle’s full value rather than your equity in it.4Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Private-party sales get more scrutiny. Texas uses a Standard Presumptive Value system to stop buyers and sellers from understating a sale price, and you owe 6.25% on whichever is higher: what you actually paid, or 80% of the SPV on the date of sale.6Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Private-Party Purchases and Standard Presumptive Values
There is a wrinkle that catches RV buyers. SPV values are often unavailable for recreational vehicles, because the database doesn’t cover many RV models, particularly older or specialized ones.4Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Motor Vehicle Tax Guide – SPV and Form 130-U When no SPV exists, the county tax office requires a certified appraisal in its place. That appraisal has to come from a licensed dealer or a licensed insurance adjuster, and it must show the appraiser’s business name, address, license number, and signature. Run the SPV calculator on the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles site before you close, so you know whether an appraisal is coming.
Trade-ins work in private-party deals too. If you swap a vehicle to the seller as part of the transaction, you pay tax on the trade difference rather than the full price.4Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Motor Vehicle Tax Guide – SPV and Form 130-U
Where You Pay and What You Bring
Sales tax on a private purchase is paid at your local county tax assessor-collector’s office, not at the state level. The form you need is Form 130-U, the Application for Texas Title and/or Registration, which handles the title transfer and the tax calculation together.7Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Application for Texas Title and/or Registration It is downloadable from the TxDMV website.
To fill it out, you need the RV’s vehicle identification number from the chassis or existing title, the year, make, and model, the agreed purchase price, and the seller’s full name and address. Bring a government-issued photo ID and proof of current liability insurance to the county office.7Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Application for Texas Title and/or Registration
Beyond the sales tax, plan for a $33 title application fee and an annual registration fee that varies by RV weight and type.8Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. href=”https://www.txdmv.gov/sites/default/files/body-files/FeeChart_1C.pdf” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>Schedule of Texas Registration Fees Most county offices take cash, checks, and credit cards.
The 30-Day Deadline and Late Penalties
You have 30 calendar days from the date the seller signs the RV over to you to file your title paperwork and pay the tax. Miss that window and a 5% penalty is added to the tax owed. Wait another 30 days and the penalty doubles to 10%.3Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Motor Vehicle – Sales and Use Tax The minimum penalty is $1. On a $50,000 RV, a 10% penalty adds more than $300.
Active-duty military members get 60 days from the date of purchase before penalties begin. The same 5% and 10% tiers apply after that extended deadline.
Flat-Rate Alternatives to the 6.25% Rate
Three types of transfers replace the percentage tax with a flat fee.
A genuine gift to a qualifying relative — parent, stepparent, child, stepchild, spouse, or sibling, among others — is taxed at $10 rather than 6.25% of value. No money can change hands in either direction; any payment turns the transfer into a sale in the state’s eyes.9Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Motor Vehicle Tax Guide – Gift Tax
New residents moving to Texas with an RV already registered in their name in another state pay a flat $90 new resident tax, regardless of the RV’s value.10State of Texas. Texas Tax Code TAX 152.023 On a $100,000 motorhome, that is a large savings against the standard rate.
An even exchange, where two parties swap vehicles of equal value with no cash involved, costs each person $5.11Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Motor Vehicle Tax Guide – Even Exchange Tax
Exemption for Disability-Modified Vehicles
Texas exempts a motor vehicle from sales and use tax when it has been modified to accommodate an orthopedic disability, provided the vehicle is used to transport, or is driven by, the person with the disability at least 80% of the time.12Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Tax Exemptions for People with Disabilities Qualifying modifications include hand controls, left-side accelerator pedals, raised ceilings, and wheelchair lifts. Standard factory options like automatic transmission and power steering do not qualify.
One boundary matters for RV shoppers: the exemption does not apply to trailers or other vehicles not designed to transport people.12Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. Tax Exemptions for People with Disabilities A modified motorhome can qualify. A travel trailer or fifth wheel cannot. To claim the exemption, submit Form 130-U along with Form 14-318, the Motor Vehicle Orthopedically Handicapped Exemption Certificate, to the dealer at purchase or to the county tax office when you title the vehicle.
Deducting the Tax on Your Federal Return
Because Texas has no state income tax, the federal sales tax deduction is worth a look after a large RV purchase. Taxpayers who itemize on Schedule A can deduct state and local sales taxes instead of state income taxes, and for Texans that choice costs nothing.13Internal Revenue Service. Use the Sales Tax Deduction Calculator
The IRS treats RVs as specified large purchases, so the tax you paid on the RV is added on top of the optional sales tax table amount for your state and income bracket. You keep the RV receipt; the IRS handles the rest through its standard tables. For the 2026 tax year, the total deduction for state and local taxes combined is capped at $40,400 for most filers and $20,200 for those married filing separately. On a $60,000 RV, the 6.25% Texas tax works out to $3,750, which is real money if you are already itemizing.
