Texas Vehicle Registration Renewal: Online, by Mail, or in Person

To renew your Texas vehicle registration, use the pre-filled renewal notice TxDMV mails about six weeks before your expiration month and submit it online at renew.txdmv.gov, by mail to your county tax assessor-collector, or in person at that office. If the notice never arrived or you’ve misplaced it, you can still renew — bring your previous registration receipt, license plate number, or Vehicle Identification Number along with a government-issued photo ID to a county tax office.¹

What You Need Before You Start

Have these items in front of you no matter which channel you use:

The renewal notice from TxDMV, which contains your vehicle details, plate number, calculated fees, and a renewal identification number. Without it, your plate number or VIN plus a photo ID works at the county office.
Proof of liability insurance meeting the Texas minimum of $30,000 per person for bodily injury, $60,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage. The online system verifies insurance electronically; mail and in-person renewals need a copy of the card or declarations page.²³
A passing emissions inspection if you live in one of 17 designated counties (see below).
A government-issued photo ID. Mail submissions must include a copy.⁴
Payment for the total shown on your notice.

Since January 1, 2025, Texas no longer requires a safety inspection for non-commercial vehicles before renewal. A $7.50 inspection program replacement fee is rolled into your registration total instead.⁵

When You Can Renew

Every Texas vehicle has a 12-month registration period that starts on the first day of a calendar month, and your expiration month is printed on the sticker and the renewal notice.⁶ You can renew as early as 90 days before expiration, or as late as 12 months after — but only if you haven’t been cited for expired registration in the meantime.¹ Renewing early doesn’t shorten the next cycle. Your new registration year still runs from the original expiration month, so nothing is lost by renewing ahead.

What It Costs

The base annual registration fee for a standard passenger vehicle weighing 6,000 pounds or less is $50.75.⁷ Every county adds its own local fee. That local charge runs from $0 in a handful of rural counties up to $21.50 in Bexar and Cameron counties, with most counties charging between $10 and $11.50. Your renewal notice combines the base fee, the county fee, and the $7.50 inspection replacement fee into a single total.

If you’re renewing after being cited for expired registration, a 20 percent penalty is added to the registration fee.⁸

Renewing Online

Online is the fastest route. Go to renew.txdmv.gov or use the Texas by Texas (TxT) app. The system asks for the renewal notice number or identifying details about your vehicle, then verifies your insurance and, where applicable, your emissions inspection automatically. Pay by credit card or electronic check.

Once the transaction completes, TxDMV emails a paid receipt. That receipt serves as proof of valid registration for up to 31 days while your sticker is printed and mailed.⁹

Renewing by Mail

Send the following to the county tax assessor-collector address printed on your renewal notice:⁴

The payment section of the renewal notice (keep the vehicle owner’s section for your records).
A copy of your current liability insurance card or declarations page.
A vehicle inspection report, if you live in an emissions-testing county.
A copy of your valid government-issued photo ID.
A check or money order for the exact amount on the notice.

There’s a two-business-day payment processing hold after TxDMV receives your submission, and the full cycle of processing, printing, and mailing runs about three weeks.¹ If your registration is close to expiring, online is safer because the emailed receipt gives you immediate proof.

Renewing in Person

Walk into any county tax assessor-collector’s office with your renewal notice (or plate number or VIN if you don’t have it), proof of insurance, a photo ID, and payment. The clerk processes the renewal and hands you a new sticker on the spot. This is the only method that produces a same-day sticker, and it’s the best fallback if you’ve lost the mailed notice and don’t want to work through the online lookup.¹

Emissions Counties

The safety inspection requirement went away in 2025, but emissions testing did not. If your vehicle is registered in Brazoria, Collin, Dallas, Denton, El Paso, Ellis, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Johnson, Kaufman, Montgomery, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, Travis, or Williamson County, you need a passing emissions test before you renew. Bexar County joins the list in 2026.¹⁰

Tracking Your Sticker

If you renewed online or by mail and are waiting, TxDMV’s “Where’s My Sticker?” tool at txdmv.gov/motorists/track shows the status. Allow about three weeks for processing, printing, and mailing.¹¹ If nothing has arrived after that, contact TxDMV or your county tax office to confirm the mailing address on file.

If Your Registration Has Already Expired

Operating a vehicle on a public road without a valid registration sticker is an offense under Texas law.¹² A court can dismiss the charge if you correct the problem before your first court appearance and pay a reimbursement fee of up to $10. If you don’t, the fine stands and renewing after a citation adds the 20 percent penalty on top of your normal charges.⁸ The 90-day early-renewal window gives you plenty of cushion to avoid all of that.

Military Stationed Out of State

Active-duty service members stationed outside Texas can renew online, by mail, or through a representative in person. During renewal, you self-certify that the vehicle is currently out of state, which exempts it from the emissions requirement if it’s registered in one of the designated counties. The inspection replacement fee is still charged at renewal, though active-duty military may qualify for a refund through a form available at a TxDMV Regional Service Center. Once the vehicle returns to Texas, you have three days to get an emissions inspection if your county requires one.¹³

New to Texas

The renewal process above assumes you already hold a Texas title and registration. If you’ve just moved to the state, you have 30 days to register, and that first-time process is different — it involves titling the vehicle in Texas at a county tax office with your out-of-state title, proof of insurance, a photo ID, and titling and registration fees.¹⁴ Renewal starts the following year.
