To track your mail ballot in Utah, go to votesearch.utah.gov and enter your first and last name, date of birth, and address. Every active registered voter in Utah is mailed a ballot automatically, and the state runs both a lookup portal and an opt-in alert system so you can follow that ballot from the day it ships to the day it’s counted.1Utah Legislature. Using the State Ballot Lookup
The portal at votesearch.utah.gov asks for six fields: first name, last name, date of birth, street address, city, and zip code.2Utah.gov. Track My Ballot Everything has to match your voter registration record exactly. A nickname, a typo, or an old address will return nothing.
If you’ve moved or changed your name recently, fix your registration first through your county clerk or at vote.utah.gov, then try the lookup again.3Utah.gov. Voter Registration Portal
Getting Automatic Status Alerts
If you’d rather be notified than keep checking, sign up for status alerts at utah.ballottrax.net. You pick how you want to be contacted, and the system sends an update each time your ballot’s status changes.4Utah.gov. Track My Ballot – Utah Voter Information Utah law requires election officials to include enrollment instructions when they mail your ballot.1Utah Legislature. Alerts are especially useful in the last days of an election, when you want to know your ballot actually made it back in time.
What Each Status Means
- Ballot Mailed. Your county has sent your ballot. Counties mail ballots no sooner than 21 days and no later than 7 days before election day.1Utah Legislature. Utah Code 20A-3a-202 – Conducting Election in Person and by Mail
- Ballot Received. Your county clerk has your completed ballot. Expect this a few business days after you drop it in the mail or a drop box.
- Ballot Counted. Your signature was verified and your votes were tabulated. This is the status you want.
- Challenged. Something didn’t match, usually the signature on your return envelope, though it can also mean required information was missing.5Utah Voter Information. Ballot Processing Safeguards
If your status sits on “Ballot Mailed” more than a week after you returned it, or never updates at all, call your county clerk. Don’t wait on it.
If Your Ballot Shows as Challenged
A challenged ballot can still be counted, but you have to move. The election officer must contact you within two business days of rejecting your ballot, by phone, mail, email, or text, to tell you what went wrong and how to cure it.6Utah Legislature. Utah Code 20A-3a-401 – Custody of Voted Ballots
You’ll need to complete and return a signed affidavit from the county clerk. If notice came by mail, the affidavit and return envelope are included; if it came electronically, you’ll get a link or instructions.6Utah Legislature. Utah Code 20A-3a-401 – Custody of Voted Ballots The deadline to return the signed affidavit is 5:00 PM three days before the official canvass. Miss it and your ballot won’t count. If the deadline is close, hand-deliver the affidavit to the clerk’s office rather than trusting the mail.
The Deadline That Makes Tracking Worth Doing
Your ballot has to be in the hands of your election officer by 8:00 PM on election day. There is no postmark grace period. A ballot postmarked on time but delivered the next morning does not count.7Utah Legislature. Utah Code 20A-3a-204 The same 8:00 PM election day cutoff applies to drop boxes.8Utah Voter Information. Securing Your Mail Ballot
Mail at least a week early to be safe. Inside the last few days, skip the mailbox and use a drop box or hand it to the county clerk.
If Your Ballot Never Arrives
If no ballot has shown up about a week after the mailing window opens, call your county election office. The clerk will check your registration, send a replacement if your address is right, or walk you through updating it first. You can also vote in person at an early voting location or on election day if the mail option runs out of runway.
Provisional and Overseas Ballots
If you cast a provisional ballot at a polling place, the same portal at votesearch.utah.gov will tell you whether it was counted or whether there’s an unresolved issue.2Utah.gov. Track My Ballot Provisional ballots take longer to process because the county has to verify eligibility first, so check back in the days after the election.
Military and overseas voters can use the state portal, and the Federal Voting Assistance Program at fvap.gov offers a state-specific status tool and local election office contacts.9Federal Voting Assistance Program.
