Where the 10.4% Comes From

Washington’s statewide sales tax is 6.5%, and it applies uniformly across the state. The remaining 3.9% is local.1Washington Department of Revenue. Local Sales Tax Change – City of Tukwila LLEP Q2 2026

What You Pay Tax On in Tukwila

Most tangible goods carry the full 10.4%. Clothing, furniture, electronics, sporting goods, household items — Washington does not exempt clothing, so a jacket is taxed the same as a television.

Digital products are taxable too. Downloads, streaming subscriptions, digital audiobooks, and software all fall under the sales tax, whether you download them or stream them.3Washington Department of Revenue. Digital Products Including Digital Goods If something would be taxed in physical form, it is generally taxed in digital form as well.4Washington Department of Revenue. Retail Sales Tax

Several services are taxable. Construction, remodeling, landscaping, and repair work on real property all trigger the tax, as do repair and maintenance services on personal property like vehicles and appliances.4Washington Department of Revenue. What’s Exempt

The biggest exemption for everyday shoppers is groceries. Washington exempts unprepared food and food ingredients from sales tax entirely.6Washington State Legislature. Washington Code RCW 82.08.0293 – Exemptions, Food and Food Ingredients Raw meat, produce, dairy, bread, canned goods, and similar staples are all exempt. The exemption does not cover prepared food, dietary supplements, soft drinks, or alcohol.5Washington Department of Revenue. Retail Sales Tax – Sales of Prepared Food The line trips people up at the grocery store itself: a rotisserie chicken from the deli counter is prepared food and taxable, while a raw chicken from the meat aisle is exempt.

Prescription drugs dispensed to patients are exempt.7Washington State Legislature. Washington Code RCW 82.08.0281 – Exemptions, Prescription Drugs So are prescribed prosthetic devices, their components and replacement parts, and medically prescribed oxygen systems. Most other durable medical equipment and mobility-enhancing equipment remain taxable unless they fall into one of those specific categories.8Washington State Legislature. Washington Code RCW 82.08.0283 – Exemptions, Prosthetic Devices, Medicines, Oxygen Over-the-counter drugs bought without a prescription are taxable.

Professional Services Are Not Taxed

Washington has never applied retail sales tax to most professional services. Legal advice, accounting, engineering, architecture, advertising, and medical care sit outside the sales tax base. If you hire a lawyer or CPA in Tukwila, their fees are not subject to the 10.4% rate, and the same goes for banking and brokerage fees. This is a frequent source of confusion because neighboring states handle it differently.

Nonprofits Still Pay

Tax-exempt nonprofits pay sales tax on their own purchases in Washington. The state treats them the same as for-profit businesses for sales tax on supplies, equipment, lodging, and construction services.9Washington Department of Revenue. Nonprofit Organizations Federal 501(c)(3) status does not create a Washington sales tax exemption. A few narrow exceptions exist for specific organization types like sheltered workshops, but there is no blanket exemption.

Which Rate Applies: Destination-Based Sourcing

Washington determines the rate by where the buyer receives the goods, not where the seller is located.10Washington State Legislature. Washington Code RCW 82.32.730 – Sourcing of Sales and Use Taxes Walk into a Tukwila store and carry your purchase out, and the 10.4% Tukwila rate applies. If that same store delivers a couch to your home in Renton, the Renton rate controls instead because Renton is the delivery destination.11Washington State Department of Revenue. The reverse matters too. Order something online from a retailer in Spokane shipped to your Tukwila address, and you pay Tukwila’s rate. The revenue follows the buyer.

Use Tax When Sales Tax Wasn’t Collected

If you buy something without paying Washington sales tax and then use it in Tukwila, you owe use tax at the same 10.4% rate. The classic scenario is driving to Oregon, which has no sales tax, buying furniture, and bringing it home. You owe use tax on that purchase.12Washington Department of Revenue. Use Tax

Use tax also applies when you buy from a private individual, from an unregistered online seller who did not collect tax, or when a business pulls items purchased with a reseller permit for internal use instead of resale. A transaction is subject to either sales tax or use tax, never both. Individuals can report and pay through the Department of Revenue’s My DOR portal or by mailing a Consumer Use Tax Return.12Washington Department of Revenue. Use Tax The obligation is widely ignored but legally enforceable, and the Department audits for it.

Hotels and Rental Cars

Hotel and motel stays in Tukwila carry an additional 1% lodging tax on top of the standard sales tax, bringing the total on a room to roughly 11.4%.13City of Tukwila. Lodging Tax Funds That revenue supports tourism-related economic development.

Short-term car rentals of 30 days or less carry a separate state tax of 11.9%, effective January 1, 2026. That surcharge sits on top of the regular sales tax, so the total tax on a rental car in Tukwila is substantially higher than on an ordinary retail purchase.

Collecting Sales Tax as a Tukwila Business

Sellers in Tukwila must collect sales tax from the buyer on every taxable transaction and remit it to the Department of Revenue.14Washington State Legislature. Washington Code RCW 82.08.050 – Seller to Collect Tax From Buyer The Department assigns a filing frequency based on estimated tax liability: monthly for higher-volume businesses, quarterly for mid-range, annually for small operations. Monthly returns are due the 25th of the following month, and quarterly returns are due at the end of the month after the quarter closes.15Washington Department of Revenue. Filing Frequencies and Due Dates

Late payment penalties escalate fast. The penalty is 5% of the unpaid tax if you miss the due date, 15% if you’re still delinquent a month later, and 25% after two months.16Washington State Legislature. WAC 458-20-22801 – Tax Reporting, Penalties Unpaid balances also accrue 6% annual interest for 2026.17Washington Department of Revenue. Interest Rate Tables Keep records for at least five years to support reported amounts.

Reseller Permits

Retailers and wholesalers who buy inventory for resale can skip paying sales tax on those purchases by using a reseller permit from the Department of Revenue. Most permits are valid for four years, though newer businesses, contractors, and businesses with filing gaps get a two-year permit.18Washington Department of Revenue. Reseller Permits

Misuse is expensive. Using a reseller permit to buy supplies for your own use, equipment you won’t resell, or items you plan to give away triggers a 50% penalty on the tax that should have been paid, even when the misuse is unintentional.19Washington State Legislature. Washington Code RCW 82.32.291 – Reseller Permit Misuse Penalty The permit can also be revoked.18Washington Department of Revenue. Reseller Permits

Remote Sellers and Marketplaces

Out-of-state sellers with more than $100,000 in gross retail sales to Washington customers in the current or prior year must register, collect, and remit sales tax as if they had a physical location here.20Washington Department of Revenue. Marketplace Facilitators That threshold counts both taxable and exempt sales and includes sales made through marketplace platforms as well as the seller’s own website.

Marketplace facilitators such as Amazon, eBay, and Etsy have their own collection obligation. When a platform facilitates a sale, handles payment, or provides fulfillment, the platform is responsible for collecting and remitting the tax on those transactions.21Washington State Legislature. Washington Code RCW 82.08.0531 – Marketplace Facilitator Collection For most Tukwila shoppers buying through major online platforms, the tax is already being charged at checkout. Individual sellers on those platforms generally don’t need to collect separately, though it’s worth confirming the platform is handling it.
