Tuscaloosa County Sales Tax: Rates, Exemptions, and Seller Filing

The Tuscaloosa County sales tax rate is 10% inside the city limits of Tuscaloosa, Northport, Brookwood, or Coaling, and 7% in unincorporated parts of the county. That combined figure is built from three layers: a 4% Alabama state tax, a 3% county tax, and a 3% municipal tax in each of those four cities.1Tuscaloosa County Economic Development Authority. Taxes and Incentives The state and county portions apply everywhere in the county; the city portion depends on the exact address of the register where you check out.

Lower Rates for Vehicles, Machinery, and Farm Equipment

Not every purchase is taxed at the standard rate. Alabama applies sharply reduced state rates to a handful of big-ticket categories, and those reductions carry through in Tuscaloosa County.

The reductions apply only to the state portion. County and city taxes are unchanged.

Groceries

Alabama has been phasing down the state tax on food for home consumption. As of September 1, 2025, the state rate on groceries is 2%, down from 3%.5Alabama Department of Revenue. In unincorporated areas the total is 5%.

The reduced grocery rate covers items typically bought at a grocery store for home preparation. Prepared meals, restaurant food, and vending machine items stay at the general rate.

What’s Exempt

Some purchases fall out of the sales tax entirely. Prescription medications filled by a licensed pharmacist or sold directly by a physician are exempt from state sales tax.6Justia. Online and Out-of-State Purchases

If you buy something from an out-of-state seller who doesn’t collect Alabama tax and you bring the item into the state, you owe use tax at the same rate you would have paid locally.9Alabama Department of Revenue. Consumers Use Tax This most often affects online orders from smaller retailers without an Alabama presence. Amazon and similar platforms collect Alabama tax automatically under the state’s marketplace facilitator law, but direct orders from out-of-state vendors may not include it.

The consumer use tax return is due monthly by the 20th, with less frequent filing available for low-liability accounts. If you already paid sales tax to another state on the same item, Alabama credits that amount against what you owe.

Registering and Filing as a Seller

Any business making retail sales in Tuscaloosa County must register with the Alabama Department of Revenue before it starts collecting tax. Registration requires the legal business name, physical address, and either an EIN or the owner’s Social Security number for a sole proprietorship, and it happens through the state’s online portal.10Alabama Department of Revenue. Filing frequency depends on volume. The default is monthly. Deducting What You Paid on Your Federal Return

A 10% combined rate adds up, and you can recover part of it federally. The IRS allows state and local sales tax as an itemized deduction on Schedule A in place of the state income tax deduction. Because Alabama does have a state income tax, compare the two and take whichever is larger.16Internal Revenue Service. Use the Sales Tax Deduction Calculator

You can calculate the sales tax deduction from actual receipts or from the IRS optional sales tax tables, which estimate a figure based on income, family size, and location. Large purchases like a vehicle or boat can be added on top of the table amount using the actual tax paid. The total deduction for all state and local taxes combined is capped under federal law; for the 2026 tax year, the cap is $40,000 for most filers with income below $500,000, phasing down for higher earners, with a lower cap for married couples filing separately.
