UCSD Registrar Charge Explained: Fees, Insurance, Disputes

A UCSD registrar charge is a line item on your TritonLink e-Bill that was initiated by the Office of the Registrar, and in almost every case it is one of your mandatory quarterly registration fees: tuition, the Student Services Fee, campus-based fees, and UC SHIP health insurance. It can also be a one-time Document Fee for new students, a $50 late fee, or a previous balance that rolled forward. Because UC San Diego’s Student Financial Solutions (SFS) office only collects the money, it cannot explain charges it did not create. Questions about the amount or reason go to the Registrar directly.

Who to Call and How to Dispute It

The Registrar’s Office handles questions about registrar-originated charges at (858) 534-3150.1UC San Diego Student Financial Solutions. Sample Billing Statement Guide Pull up the line item on your e-Bill first and have the reference number ready; every charge on the statement carries one.

If a charge rolled over unpaid from a prior statement, the billing system collapses it into a single “Previous Balance” line, which can hide what the original charge was for. Looking at the earlier statement where it first posted will usually tell you.2UC San Diego Student Financial Solutions. Understanding Your Billing Statement

If you believe the charge is wrong and the Registrar’s Office doesn’t resolve it, SFS has a formal administrative hearing process you can start to dispute it.2UC San Diego Student Financial Solutions. Understanding Your Billing Statement

When the “Charge” Is Actually a Refund

One line item regularly causes alarm: a new charge that is really a refund going out the door. When financial aid, scholarships, or an overpayment leave your account with a credit balance, the system posts an offsetting line that technically appears as a charge in order to zero the account out and release the money to you.3UC San Diego Financial Aid and Scholarships. How You Receive Your Financial Aid

You can spot these by the description. Aid refunds read “Fin Aid Rfn Ck or Direct Dpst” or “Financial Aid Refund.” Cash and e-check overpayment refunds read “Cash Chk Rfn or Direct Dpst” or “Overpayment Refund.”4UC San Diego Services and Support. Understanding Refund Charges on Your Bill Direct deposits typically land two to three business days after the line posts; paper checks take five to seven business days domestically.5UC San Diego Student Financial Solutions. What the Charge Is Made Of

For undergraduates in the 2025–26 entering cohort, the registration fees that typically appear as registrar charges each quarter are:

UC Systemwide Fees

Campus-Based Fees

  • Mandatory Health Insurance (UC SHIP): $987.00 (waivable with comparable coverage)
  • ICA Student Activity Fee: $354.43
  • University Center Fee: $114.06
  • RIMAC Recreation Facility Fee: $100.00
  • Campus Activity Fee: $93.22
  • Student Transportation Fee: $75.00
  • CAPS/Student Mental Health Fee: $38.63
  • Canyonview Recreation Facility Fee: $22.00
  • PRESS Newspaper Fee: $3.507UC San Diego Students. Explanation of Registration Fees

Additional and One-Time Fees

  • Document Fee: $165.00, one-time for new undergraduates (covers transcripts, enrollment verifications, co-curricular records, and a first replacement diploma)
  • Undergraduate College Activity Fee: $9.00 to $17.00 per quarter depending on your residential college (Revelle at the low end, Muir at the high end)
  • International Student Visa Administration Fee: $150.00, one-time
  • UCSA Systemwide Fee: $7.00 annually, non-mandatory and opt-outable6UC San Diego Students. 2025-26 Undergraduate Registration Fees

Graduate students see a similar structure with different numbers: $14,430 in UC systemwide tuition and fees for the year, $1,125 in campus fees, and a $5,820 graduate health insurance premium for a California resident enrolled all three quarters. Nonresident graduate students add $15,102 per year in supplemental tuition, and new graduate students pay a one-time $100 Document Fee.8UC San Diego Financial Aid and Scholarships. Summer session works differently. Tuition is per unit instead of flat: $291 per unit for undergraduates and $400 per unit for graduate and visiting students in summer 2026, with residency making no difference. Campus-based fees still apply at reduced per-session rates, and if you enroll in all three summer sessions in the same year, one set of campus-based fees is automatically refunded after the term ends.9UC San Diego Summer Session. The Health Insurance Line Is the Biggest Removable One

UC SHIP is a condition of enrollment, so every registered student is auto-enrolled and charged each quarter: $1,065 for undergraduates and $2,220 for graduate and professional students.10UC San Diego Student Health and Well-Being. UC SHIP If you have comparable outside coverage, you can apply for a Health Fee Waiver through TritonLink. A new application is required every academic year, and you can file during the fall, winter, or spring waiver periods. If the waiver is denied, the charge stays and you remain enrolled in UC SHIP.11MyUCSHIP. Waiving UC SHIP Coverage

Late Fees, and What Happens If You Don’t Pay

Payment deadlines for 2025–26 are September 24, 2025 for fall, December 19, 2025 for winter, and March 20, 2026 for spring.6UC San Diego Students. 2025-26 Undergraduate Registration Fees Miss the deadline without arranging payment and you can be dropped from all classes and waitlists, with no guarantee of getting the same courses back.12UC San Diego Students. Registration Fees Overview

Two separate $50 late fees can appear. The Late Registration Fee hits when fees are paid after the due date. The Late Enrollment Fee hits when you enroll in courses after the registration deadline. Both are non-refundable.13UC San Diego Catalog. Paying the Charge

UCSD accepts e-checks, credit cards, cash, checks, money orders, and Western Union.15Triton. UCSD to Accept Credit Card Payments for Tuition Credit card payments go through a third-party processor, NelNet, and carry a 2.75% non-refundable service fee that posts as a separate charge on the cardholder’s statement. So a card payment produces two transactions: one for the amount applied to the student account and one for the service fee. Internally, UCSD labels the transaction “Triton Credit Card Payment.” The exact descriptor on an external bank statement isn’t spelled out in university documentation, so if you or a parent see an unfamiliar NelNet or UCSD-related charge after paying, cross-reference the amount against TritonLink activity to confirm it.16UC San Diego Student Financial Solutions. Credit Card Payment Information

If paying the full balance at once is a problem, the Triton Registration Installment Plan (TRIP) splits mandatory tuition and registration fees into three monthly installments. Early enrollment costs $40; enrolling after the first billing due date costs $65. The enrollment fee is non-refundable, and TRIP does not cover housing, books, parking, or Student Health Services fees.17UC San Diego Student Financial Solutions. If Financial Aid or a Fee Remission Should Have Covered It

California-resident undergraduates from families earning under $80,000 are covered for “educational and student services fees” under the Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan, with more need-based grant aid possible on top.18UC San Diego Outreach. Financial Aid Information When aid exceeds charges, the credit refunds automatically at the start of the quarter; aid that arrives mid-quarter disburses within five to seven days.5UC San Diego Student Financial Solutions. Graduate students working as Teaching Assistants, Graduate Student Researchers, or other academic student employees at 25% time or more receive fee remissions. For TAs and similar positions, remission covers tuition, the Student Services Fee, GSHIP, and all campus-based fees, worth $7,124.48 per quarter for a resident in 2025–26.19UC San Diego Graduate Division. ASE Fee Payment Information GSR appointments at 25% or more cover “all tuition, fees, and nonresidential supplemental tuition.” One important boundary: domestic graduate students who don’t establish California residency by their second year are generally on the hook for out-of-state supplemental tuition themselves, because the university typically won’t cover it for U.S. citizens past the first year.20UC San Diego MAE Department.
