Union City Parking Rules: Permits, Street Cleaning, and Tickets

Union City parking rules combine a city residential permit program with New Jersey state traffic law, and the fines for getting them wrong run from $40 for a missed street cleaning up to $250 for parking in an accessible space without authorization. If you live in the city, you need a decal from the Union City Parking Authority to park long-term on the street. If you’re visiting, you need to watch for meters, street cleaning signs, and the state’s clearance rules around hydrants and crosswalks.

Resident Parking Permits

Long-term street parking in Union City requires a valid residential decal issued by the Parking Authority.1eCode360. Union City Code Chapter 16 Vehicles and Traffic The program covers passenger vehicles only. Commercial vehicles, trucks over 4,000 pounds, trailers, and similar heavy equipment do not qualify.

Fees are modest. Your first vehicle’s permit is free. A second vehicle costs $3, and three or more cost $6 each. Residents 62 or older get permits free of charge regardless of how many vehicles they register.2Union City Parking Authority. What You Need to Apply

Bring a New Jersey driver’s license and a vehicle registration, both in the same name and both showing a Union City address. Originals only, not copies.3Union City Parking Authority. Union City Parking Authority – News

If either document shows a different address, you can still qualify with a photo ID and two proofs of residency. PSE&G, cable, and water bills count, as do a bank statement, lease, or deed. Bills must be no older than two months on the day you apply.2Union City Parking Authority. Permits

You can start online at ucpaonline.parkvantage.com, but the physical permit has to be picked up in person at the Parking Authority office at 506-518 38th Street (rooftop level), between Kennedy Boulevard and Bergenline Avenue. Visitor Permits

Residents in the permit program can get two free visitor permits so guests can park in restricted zones without a citation. Street Cleaning

Mechanical sweepers run on a posted schedule, usually twice a week on each side of the street. Signs on the block list the days and hours when parking is prohibited. The fine for missing the window is $40, fixed citywide.1eCode360. Union City Code Chapter 16 Vehicles and Traffic

A single ticket is manageable. The real damage comes from habit. Residents who routinely forget to move their cars can pile up hundreds of dollars in fines over a few months. A recurring phone alarm set to your block’s schedule is the simplest fix.

Metered Parking

Commercial districts use meters to keep spaces turning over. The rate is $0.25 per 20 minutes.2Union City Parking Authority. Permits Posted maximums usually cap stays at two to four hours depending on the block. Meters accept coins, credit cards, and ParkMobile.

Time limits are enforced in practice. Feeding the meter past the posted maximum will not protect you if an officer chalks your tires or logs your plate.

Overnight Rules for Trucks and Commercial Vehicles

Union City prohibits trucks, tractor-trailers, buses, trailers, commuter vans, and any vehicle with a gross weight over 4,000 pounds from parking on city streets between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Passenger cars, station wagons, and noncommercial vans are exempt.1eCode360. Union City Code Chapter 16 Vehicles and Traffic Fines run $100 to $110, and some violations require a court appearance rather than a simple payment.2Union City Parking Authority. Permits

The 4,000-pound threshold catches more vehicles than people expect. Many full-size pickups and larger SUVs exceed it. Before parking overnight, check the gross vehicle weight on the door jamb sticker.

Where You Cannot Park at All

New Jersey state law sets clearance distances that apply on every street in Union City, permit or no permit. Under N.J.S.A. 39:4-138, you cannot park:

  • Within 10 feet of a fire hydrant
  • Within 25 feet of a crosswalk or the side line of an intersecting street, reduced to 10 feet where a curb extension has been built
  • In front of any public or private driveway
  • Within 50 feet of a stop sign
  • Within 20 feet of a fire station driveway, or within 75 feet on the opposite side when posted
  • Alongside another parked vehicle (double parking)
  • On sidewalks, bridges, or in underpasses, except where parking is specifically provided

Each of these carries a $55 fine under the statewide violations bureau schedule.5New Jersey Courts. Statewide Violations Bureau Schedule The hydrant rule trips up the most drivers. Ten feet is roughly the length of a compact car, so if a hydrant is sitting right next to your bumper, you’re almost certainly too close.6Justia. Accessible Parking Spaces

Parking in a space reserved for people with disabilities without proper authorization carries a $250 fine for a first offense. Repeat offenses carry a minimum $250 fine and up to 90 days of community service. The vehicle may also be towed.7New Jersey Department of Human Services. Guide to Accessible Parking

To use an accessible space legally, the person with the disability identification card must be in the vehicle or with the driver. Using someone else’s placard results in immediate revocation and a fine of at least $250.7New Jersey Department of Human Services. Guide to Accessible Parking

Snow Emergencies

When the city declares a snow emergency, all vehicles must be removed from designated snow emergency routes so plows can clear the road. These routes are marked with permanent signage so residents can identify them before a storm. Vehicles left on a route during an active declaration can be towed at the owner’s expense, with towing and storage fees charged separately from any parking citation.

Declarations are based on forecast accumulation, not current road conditions. A dry street at the time of the announcement does not mean the restriction isn’t in effect.

Paying or Contesting a Ticket

Union City parking tickets are paid online through the New Jersey Courts portal at portal.njcourts.gov.8Union City Parking Authority. Union City Parking Authority Paying counts as an admission of liability, so if you plan to fight the ticket, don’t pay first.

Grounds for contesting a citation include errors on the ticket itself (wrong plate, wrong vehicle description, wrong location), missing or obscured signage at the time, a malfunctioning meter, or proof that you weren’t the owner when the ticket was issued. Photograph the evidence right away. Damaged signs get replaced, meters get fixed, and your record of the conditions at the moment of the violation is often the only thing a hearing officer can work with.

If your vehicle is towed rather than ticketed, New Jersey’s Predatory Towing Prevention Act offers some protection. For tows from private property, the towing company must post conspicuous signage with charges, storage location, and redemption hours before the tow occurs. Fees for non-consensual towing are presumed unreasonable if they exceed the company’s normal consensual rate by more than 25 percent. Complaints go to the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs.9New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs. Predatory Towing Prevention Act
