Utah Code on Expired Registration: $50 Fine, Doubled Fee, Impound

Driving with expired registration in Utah is an infraction under Utah Code 41-1a-1303 with a suggested fine of $50, but a judge can dismiss the citation entirely if you renew within 14 days and your tags had been expired less than two months. The real risk sits further out: once registration has been expired more than three months, an officer can have your vehicle towed on the spot, and any insurance lapse or out-of-state plate situation discovered during the stop carries penalties many times higher than the registration fine itself.1Utah Legislature. Utah registration runs 12 months, starting the first day of the month you register and expiring the last day of that same month a year later. If that date falls on a weekend or holiday, you have until midnight of the next business day.2Utah Legislature. Utah Code 41-1a-215 – Staggered Registration Dates – Exceptions There is no grace period. The moment you drive on a public road after that expiration date, you are technically in violation.

The $50 Fine and the 14-Day Dismissal Window

The Uniform Fine Schedule sets the suggested fine for expired registration at $50. Because it’s a non-moving infraction, no surcharge is added.3Utah Courts. 2025 Uniform Fine Schedule

The schedule also builds in a dismissal path worth paying attention to. A judge may throw out the citation if two things are true: the citation was issued within two months of your registration expiring, and you renew within 14 days of receiving the citation.3Utah Courts. 2025 Uniform Fine Schedule If both conditions fit your situation, renewing immediately and bringing proof to court can wipe the $50 away entirely.

Mandatory court appearance is not required for this infraction. You can pay the $50 and move on, or you can appear if you want to contest it or ask for a dismissal based on a timely renewal.3Utah Courts. 2025 Uniform Fine Schedule Ignoring the citation is the worst option. The court can issue a bench warrant for failure to appear or failure to pay.4Utah Legislature. Utah Code 77-7-19 – Procedure on Citation

The Doubled Fee You Owe the State

The $50 fine isn’t the whole bill. Utah Code 41-1a-1307 imposes a separate administrative penalty on anyone caught driving without having paid registration fees. The penalty equals the full amount of your title and registration fees, effectively doubling what you owe the state when you finally renew. This applies on top of the court fine.1Utah Legislature. Three Months Is the Impound Line

Utah Code 41-1a-1101 lets any peace officer seize a vehicle without a warrant once registration has been expired more than three months. The same authority applies to vehicles that have never been properly registered by the current owner, or whose registration has been suspended or revoked.5Utah Legislature. Utah Code 41-1a-1101 – Seizure and Impoundment of Vehicles

At two months and 29 days expired, an officer writes a ticket and you drive home. At three months and one day, the officer can have the car towed. Towing and storage costs fall entirely on the owner, and you cannot reclaim the vehicle until the registration issue is resolved and all impound-related costs are paid.6Utah Legislature. Utah Code 41-6a-1406 – Removal and Impoundment of Vehicles Storage fees accumulate daily. The three-month mark is where putting off renewal stops being cheap.

New Residents Face a Different, Steeper Penalty

If you recently moved to Utah and are still driving on out-of-state plates, you are not dealing with the $50 infraction. Under Utah Code 41-1a-202, new residents must register within 60 days of establishing residency, with the clock starting at residency, not at your first DMV visit.7Utah Legislature. Utah Code 41-1a-202 – Definitions – Vehicles Exempt From Registration

Missing that deadline is a Class C misdemeanor under Utah Code 41-1a-1303.5, with a minimum fine of $1,000. A court cannot dismiss the charge just because you eventually registered. If you appear with proof of current registration and the violation lasted less than a year, a judge may reduce the fine to $200, but that’s the floor in that scenario.8Utah Legislature. What Else Can Go Wrong at the Stop

An expired-tag stop is also an insurance check. Driving without insurance in Utah is a separate Class C misdemeanor under Utah Code 41-12a-302. A first offense carries a minimum $400 fine; a second within three years jumps to at least $1,000.9Utah Legislature. Utah Code 41-12a-302 – Operating Motor Vehicle Without Owners or Operators Security – Penalty Registration often lapses because insurance lapsed first, so if that’s your situation, fix the insurance gap before you renew the registration.

License suspension is a smaller worry than most drivers assume. Utah Code 53-3-221 bars the Driver License Division from revoking, denying, suspending, or disqualifying a license based solely on failure to appear, failure to pay a fine, or a bench warrant issued for either.10Utah Legislature. Utah Code 53-3-221 – Offenses That May Result in Denial, Suspension, Disqualification, or Revocation of License Expired registration by itself is a non-moving violation, so it shouldn’t put your license at risk.

The protection has limits, though. Utah Code 53-3-218 still allows courts to notify the Driver License Division about failures to appear tied to moving violations, no-insurance charges, and certain other offenses.11Utah Legislature. Utah Code 53-3-218 – Reports of Convictions and Pleas Held in Abeyance If the stop produces something besides the expired tag, the license consequences come back into play. Unpaid fines can also be sent to collections, which doesn’t touch your license but does affect credit and future court dealings.

How to Renew and Clear the Citation

You can renew registration online, by mail, or in person at a county DMV office. Some counties require a current emissions or safety inspection before processing a renewal, and the Utah DMV has an online tool for checking whether your specific vehicle needs one.12Utah State Tax Commission. Renew Your Registration If an inspection is required and yours has lapsed, you’ll need to pass it before the DMV can process the renewal.

If you’ve already been cited, timing matters. Renewing within 14 days of the citation date gives you the strongest shot at a dismissal, provided your registration had been expired less than two months when you were stopped. Bring proof of the new registration to your court date, or submit it to the court as directed on the citation.
