Utah does not offer an official expired registration grace period, but there is one useful safety net: if you’re cited for expired registration within two months of your expiration date and you complete your renewal within 14 days of getting the ticket, a court can dismiss the citation entirely. Outside that narrow path, you are driving illegally the moment the clock rolls past midnight on the last day of your expiration month, and the consequences get steadily worse the longer you wait.
What Happens After Your Registration Expires
Your registration expires at midnight on the last day of the month printed on your registration card. From that point, the calendar decides what you’re facing.
- Day one through two months past expiration: driving is an infraction with a suggested $50 fine, but a citation in this window can be dismissed if you renew within 14 days of receiving it.
- Two months through three months: still an infraction with the same $50 fine, but the dismissal option is gone. You pay the fine plus any court costs.

- After six months: you can no longer renew online or at a third-party kiosk. An in-person DMV visit is required, and the standard online temporary permit is no longer available.
The three-month mark is the real dividing line. Before it, you’re dealing with paperwork and a modest fine. After it, a routine traffic stop can end with your car on a tow truck.
The 14-Day Dismissal Window
The closest thing Utah has to a grace period comes from the state’s uniform fine schedule, not from the DMV. If an officer cites you for expired registration within two months of your expiration date, the court can dismiss the citation as long as you show proof that you renewed within 14 days of receiving the ticket.2Utah State Courts. 2025 Uniform Fine Schedule
Dismissal is not automatic. You still have to appear in court or follow the court’s process for submitting proof of renewal. Both conditions must be met: the citation was issued within two months of expiration, and you renewed within 14 days of the citation. Miss either window and the fine stands.
If you simply forgot and caught the lapse quickly, this provision gives you a realistic path to zero consequences after a stop. It’s not a strategy to rely on, though. You’re still driving illegally in the meantime, and other issues during the stop can compound the problem.
Fines and Impoundment
Driving with expired registration is classified as an infraction under Utah Code 41-1a-1303 with a suggested fine of $50.3Utah Legislature. The real financial risk kicks in at three months. After that point, any peace officer can seize your vehicle without a warrant if it’s being driven on a highway.1Utah Legislature. Vehicles that sit unclaimed long enough can be auctioned.
A separate and much harsher penalty applies if you moved to Utah and never registered your vehicle here at all. That situation falls under Utah Code 41-1a-1303.5, which is a Class C misdemeanor carrying a minimum $1,000 fine. A court can reduce the fine to $200 if you register within a year, but it cannot dismiss the charge simply because you eventually got around to it. Standard expired-registration rules do not apply to that scenario.
Temporary Permits While You Sort Things Out
If your registration has lapsed and you still need to drive to complete an emissions test or handle another renewal requirement, Utah offers a 30-day temporary permit. Once your inspections are done, you finish the renewal online, at an On the SPOT station, or at any DMV office. Completing it online adds a 15-day temporary permit while your new registration card and decal are mailed.
How to Renew a Registration That’s Already Expired
The renewal steps themselves are the same whether you’re on time or late. What changes is which channels remain open to you.
Expired Less Than Six Months
You can renew online through Renewal Express, at a participating On the SPOT renewal station, or at a DMV office. You’ll need your VIN, your renewal PIN (from your renewal notice or the Utah Motor Vehicle Portal), and proof of any required emissions testing.5Utah State Tax Commission. Expired More Than Six Months
Online renewal is no longer available. You’ll need to visit a DMV office in person.7Utah State Tax Commission.
