Why She Did It
McClain, then 30, was a licensed vocational nurse and mother of three children from a previous relationship. She had told her fiancé she was pregnant with his child, but she had actually miscarried. With a May wedding approaching, she set out to find a baby she could pass off as their newborn.10NBC DFW. Nurse Accused in Baby Abduction Had Miscarried
Montgomery County District Attorney Brett Ligon called the shooting an “intentional act” and part of a “wider plan to kidnap any child.” Golden was not specifically targeted; according to Ligon, she was “in the wrong place at the wrong time.”11CBS News. At the sentencing, Linda Golden, Kala’s mother, said she was “pleased” that McClain would never be released but would “never be over the pain of losing my daughter.” She said Kala’s two older sons, then three and six, “still cry out for their mother and ask when she is coming home,” adding, “I would say she got justice and that I’m watching over her babies the best I can.”14ABC 7 Chicago.
