Virginia DMV Phone Numbers, Hours, and Calling Tips

The main Virginia DMV phone number is (804) 497-7100. That single line handles most driver’s license, vehicle registration, title, and PIN-reset questions, and it’s open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern, plus Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. Callers who are deaf or hard of hearing can dial 711 for Virginia Relay or call (800) 828-1120 directly.1Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Contact Us

Direct Lines for Business Callers

Two specialized departments have their own numbers. Using them saves you a transfer, because the general customer service agents cannot pull up business accounts.

  • Motor Carrier Services: (804) 249-5140, option 3. Use this line for heavy vehicle filings, interstate permits, overweight citations, and IFTA tax questions.2Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Contact Motor Carrier Services
  • Dealer Services: (804) 367-0901. Licensed dealers call this line for dealer licensing, wholesale transactions, and title processing questions.3Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Dealer Services Contacts

The reverse is also true. Dealer Services reps don’t have access to your personal driver record, so if you’re a regular customer, stick with the main line.

Best Times to Call

Mondays and the first business day after a holiday tend to be the worst for hold times. If your question can wait, calling mid-week after 10 a.m. usually means a shorter wait. Avoid dialing right at 8 a.m., since the queue fills the moment lines open.

What to Have Ready Before You Call

The fastest calls are the ones where you already have your documents in front of you. For any question about your driving record, license status, or reinstatement, keep your Virginia driver’s license number or Customer Identifier close. The Customer Identifier is printed on the front of your license or ID card, and it’s the same number you use to set up your online DMV account.5Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. For vehicle questions about a title, registration, or lien, pull out your Vehicle Identification Number. It’s the 17-character string on your registration card, or on the metal plate visible through the driver’s side of the windshield. A title number works too. Agents can search by either, but without at least one of those identifiers, the call stalls while you go digging through the glove compartment.

Getting Through the Phone Menu

Dialing (804) 497-7100 drops you into an automated menu that sorts calls by category: licensing, registration, insurance compliance, and so on. For a simple lookup like verifying a driving transcript, the automated system can handle the request without a live agent. For anything more involved, keep pressing through until you reach the option for a representative.

When hold times are long, the system may offer a callback. This lets you hang up while keeping your place in line. It’s worth accepting rather than sitting on hold for 20 or 30 minutes, especially during Monday mornings or the day after a holiday.

When You Don’t Need to Call

Most of the transactions people call about can be handled online without waiting on hold. The Virginia DMV website supports registration renewal, address changes, license and CDL renewal, title replacement, plate purchases, insurance verification, reinstatement fee payments, and compliance summary requests.6Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. If your license is suspended and you’re calling to find out what you owe, the free online Compliance Summary is faster than the phone. It pulls up every outstanding requirement, including unpaid fees, court orders, and insurance lapses, so you can see exactly what’s blocking your reinstatement.7Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. The online contact form is another option during normal weekday hours if you’d rather submit a written question than wait on hold.1Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.
