Virginia’s Driver Improvement Program is an eight-hour defensive driving clinic, licensed by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, that costs no more than $100 and can be taken in a classroom or online.1Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Driver Improvement Some drivers are ordered to attend after accumulating demerit points or by a judge in a traffic case; others sign up voluntarily to earn safe driving points or qualify for an insurance discount.
Who Has to Attend
The DMV directs you to a clinic once your record crosses a point threshold. For drivers 18 and older, that’s 12 demerit points in 12 consecutive months or 18 demerit points in 24 consecutive months. For drivers under 18, the thresholds drop to 9 points in 12 months or 12 points in 24 months.2Virginia Code Commission. Virginia Code 46.2-498 – Driver Improvement Clinics; Voluntary Attendance
Drivers under 18 face a stricter rule on top of that. Any conviction carrying demerit points, or any seatbelt or child restraint violation, triggers a clinic directive from the Commissioner regardless of total points. Clinics taken under this mandatory directive do not earn safe driving points.3Virginia Code Commission. Virginia Code Title 46.2 Chapter 3 Article 5 – Licensure of Minors
A judge can also order the clinic as part of a traffic case, sometimes using completion to dismiss a charge or reduce a sentence. When a court orders the clinic, the court decides whether you get safe driving points, and you have to bring court documentation to the provider before the DMV will award them.4Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Taking the Clinic Voluntarily
You don’t need an order to enroll. Any Virginia-licensed driver can take the clinic voluntarily to earn five safe driving points, qualify for an insurance premium reduction, or both over time.2Virginia Code Commission. Virginia Code 46.2-498 – Driver Improvement Clinics; Voluntary Attendance This is the most common reason people take it when they haven’t been told to.
There’s a timing cap. You can receive safe driving points from a clinic only once every two years. If you took it and received points, you can take it again after one year to get the insurance reduction instead, but you can’t claim the same benefit twice inside the two-year window.2Virginia Code Commission. How the Point Credit Works
Virginia tracks demerit points for traffic convictions and safe driving points for clean driving. You normally earn one safe driving point per full calendar year with a valid license and no violations or suspensions, up to a maximum of five.5Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. The Points System
Completing a clinic subtracts five demerit points from your record. If you have fewer than five demerit points, the leftover credit converts into safe driving points, up to the five-point cap. Two demerit points and no safe driving points becomes zero demerit points and three safe driving points.2Virginia Code Commission. Virginia Code 46.2-498 – Driver Improvement Clinics; Voluntary Attendance The clinic does not erase the underlying conviction. The violation still shows on your driving history; only the point balance moves.
Cost
A clinic costs no more than $100, whether classroom or online, and online providers tend to sit at the lower end of the range.1Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Driver Improvement You pay the provider directly; the DMV charges no separate clinic fee.
Enrolling and Finishing the Course
To register, you need your Virginia driver’s license number and the reason you’re attending. If a court ordered the clinic, the provider will also want the court name and your case or docket number so your completion is matched to the right proceeding. The DMV publishes the full list of licensed providers.4Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Driver Improvement Clinics
The course runs eight hours and covers traffic safety, hazard recognition, and Virginia traffic law. Classroom sessions are offered around the state; online sessions run through DMV-licensed providers.1Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Driver Improvement You have to pass a final exam. For online courses, the exam is taken online through the same provider; paper testing is not permitted for the online format.6Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Complete an Online Driving Improvement Clinic Classroom students take the exam in person at the end of the session.
After You Finish
The provider issues a certificate of completion and reports your results electronically to the DMV. If the clinic was court-ordered, you are generally responsible for getting the physical certificate to the court clerk by the deadline the judge set. The electronic report to the DMV does not substitute for the court’s own copy.
If the court ordered the clinic and you want the safe driving points as well, the provider needs court documentation authorizing those points before the DMV will award them. Without that paperwork, you get credit for completing the clinic but no points.4Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Driver Improvement Clinics
Missing a DMV-Ordered Clinic
If the DMV ordered the clinic and you don’t finish within 90 days, your driving privilege is suspended and stays suspended until you complete the requirement.1Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Driver Improvement The Commissioner also places you on a six-month probation period after a mandatory directive.7Virginia Code Commission. Virginia Code 46.2-499 – Driver’s License Probation
Reinstatement is not automatic once you finally finish. Virginia reinstatement fees run from $145 to $220 depending on the suspension.8Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Reinstate Driver’s License Those fees sit on top of the clinic cost, so letting the 90-day deadline slide can turn a $100 obligation into a bill over $300.
If You Hold a Commercial Driver’s License
The clinic works the same way for signup and points, with one important limit. Federal law bars states from masking, deferring, or diverting traffic convictions off a CDL holder’s record, so completing a clinic cannot keep a conviction off the Commercial Driver’s License Information System, whether the violation happened in a commercial vehicle or your personal car.9eCFR. 49 CFR 384.226 – Prohibition on Masking Convictions You can still take the clinic for safe driving points or to satisfy a DMV order, but the conviction itself stays on your CDL record. The only exceptions are parking, vehicle weight, and vehicle defect violations.
