Virginia WIC Income Limits: Household Size, SNAP Eligibility, and Documents

To qualify for WIC in Virginia, your household’s gross income must be at or below 185 percent of the federal poverty guidelines for your household size. For a family of four, that ceiling is $59,478 a year, or $4,957 a month, through June 30, 2026.1Virginia Department of Health. Income Limits by Household Size (Through June 30, 2026)

The current chart took effect June 3, 2025 and runs through June 30, 2026.1Virginia Department of Health. WIC Program Income Chart Find your household size and compare your gross income to the ceiling:

  • 1 person: $28,953 per year / $2,413 per month / $557 per week
  • 2 people: $39,128 per year / $3,261 per month / $753 per week
  • 3 people: $49,303 per year / $4,109 per month / $949 per week
  • 4 people: $59,478 per year / $4,957 per month / $1,144 per week
  • 5 people: $69,653 per year / $5,805 per month / $1,340 per week
  • 6 people: $79,828 per year / $6,653 per month / $1,536 per week
  • 7 people: $90,003 per year / $7,501 per month / $1,731 per week
  • 8 people: $100,178 per year / $8,349 per month / $1,927 per week
  • Each additional person: add $10,175 per year / $848 per month / $196 per week

If your income lands at or below the number for your household size, you meet the financial test. The figures are a ceiling, not a target.

How to Count Your Household

Your WIC household is everyone living under the same roof who shares income and expenses, related or not. Pregnancy changes the math in your favor: a pregnant woman counts herself plus each baby she is carrying, so a single pregnant woman counts as two, and a woman expecting twins counts as three.3Food and Nutrition Service. WIC Eligibility That shifts you into a larger bracket with a higher income ceiling, and for applicants near the cutoff it is often what tips the calculation.

Virginia’s prescreening tool at myvawic.org runs the numbers for you. It asks who lives in your home, who is pregnant, and what your pre-tax income is, then compares those figures to the right threshold.4Virginia Department of Health. Apply for WIC

Automatic Eligibility Through SNAP, Medicaid, or TANF

If you or a child in your care is already enrolled in SNAP, Medicaid, or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, you are automatically considered income-eligible for WIC and the clinic does not need to verify your earnings.3Food and Nutrition Service. WIC Eligibility This is called adjunctive eligibility. Those programs have already confirmed your income is low enough, so WIC accepts that determination.

Bring your SNAP or TANF award letter, or a current Medicaid card, to your appointment, and leave the pay stubs at home. You still need to meet WIC’s other requirements — Virginia residency, falling into a covered category, and a nutritional risk finding — but the dollar question is closed.

Income That Doesn’t Count

Federal rules exclude several kinds of money from the WIC income calculation. Getting these exclusions right can be the difference between qualifying and being told you are over the line.5eCFR. 7 CFR 246.7 – Certification of Participants

  • Military housing allowances, including Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) for service members in off-base or privatized housing, overseas cost-of-living allowances, and combat pay.
  • Loans you have to repay, including student loans.
  • Student financial aid: scholarships, grants (including Pell Grants), work-study, and fellowships funded under Title IV of the Higher Education Act.
  • Non-cash benefits like employer-paid health insurance, job-provided housing, or food produced and consumed on a farm.
  • Other federal program benefits: SNAP, public housing assistance, home energy assistance, and school lunch benefits.
  • Tax refunds and credits, including the Earned Income Tax Credit.
  • Stipends from VISTA, AmeriCorps, and similar volunteer programs.

Military families should make sure BAH is pulled out of the Leave and Earnings Statement before the clinic compares income to the limit. That one exclusion routinely moves households from “over” to “under.”

Documents to Bring to Your Certification Appointment

Virginia WIC clinics need to see proof of three things: income, identity, and Virginia residency.

For income, bring your most recent pay stubs with year-to-date earnings, a W-2 or tax return from the most recent calendar year, or a letter from your employer stating your wages. If you are self-employed, bring your most recent tax return showing net self-employment earnings.

For identity, bring a driver’s license, birth certificate, or other government-issued ID for each person applying. For residency, bring a current lease, utility bill, or piece of mail with your Virginia address.

If you are using adjunctive eligibility, your SNAP or TANF award letter or current Medicaid card replaces the income documents.3Food and Nutrition Service. WIC Eligibility

One Thing to Know Beyond Income

Income is the question most people ask first, but WIC also requires that you fall into a covered category — pregnant, breastfeeding, within six months postpartum, an infant, or a child under five — and that a clinician identify a nutritional risk at your appointment.3Food and Nutrition Service. WIC Eligibility The nutritional risk screening is not a hard bar. Common findings include anemia, being underweight or overweight, a history of pregnancy complications, and poor dietary patterns such as low fruit and vegetable intake.6Virginia Department of Health. WIC Nutritional Risk Criteria Most applicants who clear the income and category tests also qualify on risk.

If You’re Over the Limit or Get Denied

Income limits reset every year when the federal poverty guidelines update, so a household that is slightly over today may qualify next cycle without earning a dollar less. Circumstances also change: a new pregnancy raises your household count, a job loss drops your income, and either change lets you reapply right away.

If the clinic denies your application, federal rules require a written notice explaining why and informing you of your right to a fair hearing. You have at least 60 days from the date on the notice to request a hearing, you can bring a family member, friend, or attorney, and the request does not need to be formal — any clear statement that you want the decision reviewed is enough.7GovInfo. 7 CFR 246.9 – Fair Hearing Procedures for Participants You can also reapply at any time if your situation changes, without waiting for the hearing to run its course.
