Wake County Gun Permit: Eligibility, Fees, and How to Apply

To get a Wake County gun permit, apply for a North Carolina concealed handgun permit through the Wake County Sheriff’s Office at the John H. Baker Jr. Public Safety Center in Raleigh. The application costs $90, requires fingerprinting and a background check, and the Sheriff has 45 days to approve or deny once your file is complete.1North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina General Statutes 14-415.15 – Issuance or Denial of Permit The old pistol purchase permit no longer exists: North Carolina Senate Bill 41, signed in 2023, repealed it, so handgun buys from licensed dealers now go through the federal background check at the point of sale and the concealed handgun permit is the only firearm authorization you apply for locally.2North Carolina General Assembly. At the appointment, staff capture your fingerprints on a digital scanner. The prints go to the State Bureau of Investigation and are also run against the FBI’s national database. Bring your driver’s license, the original training certificate, and the signed mental health release. The visit tends to be quick once your online application is on file. Walking in without the online step first will slow everything down.

How Long It Takes and How Long It Lasts

The Sheriff has 45 days to issue or deny your permit after receiving your completed application and your mental health records from outside providers.1North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina General Statutes 14-415.15 – Issuance or Denial of Permit The office must request those records within 10 days of receiving your application. In practice the bottleneck is how fast hospitals and treatment facilities respond. Some applicants have their permit in three weeks; others wait the full 45 days.

Once issued, the permit is valid statewide for five years from the date of issuance.11North Carolina General Assembly. Where the Permit Does Not Let You Carry

A North Carolina concealed handgun permit is not blanket permission. The statute lists places that remain off-limits even to permit holders:11North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina Code 14-415.11 – Permit to Carry Concealed Handgun; Scope of Permit

  • Schools and educational property. Carrying on a school campus or at a school-sponsored event is a felony under a separate statute.13North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina General Statutes Chapter 14 Criminal Law 14-269.2
  • Law enforcement and correctional facilities, including police stations, jails, and prisons.
  • State and federal government buildings, including any government office within a shared building.
  • Areas restricted by the General Assembly, including the State Legislative Building and Legislative Office Building.
  • Federal restricted areas, such as post offices and federal courthouses.
  • Private property posted with a conspicuous notice prohibiting concealed handguns.

A “no weapons” sign at a restaurant or store carries legal weight in North Carolina. Ignoring one can bring criminal charges.

Renewing Your Permit

The Sheriff’s Office mails a renewal reminder at least 45 days before expiration, but missing the notice does not excuse a late renewal.14North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina Code Chapter 14 – Article 54B – Concealed Handgun Permit – Section: 14-415.16 You can file within the 90 days before expiration. Renewal requires a new set of fingerprints, unless yours were submitted digitally after June 30, 2001, plus an affidavit that you still meet the eligibility criteria and the $75 fee. The Sheriff may waive a repeat of the training course.

If you renew on time, the existing permit stays valid until the Sheriff acts on your renewal, so you have no gap. Miss the expiration date and you have a 60-day grace period in which the Sheriff can still waive the training requirement, but your permit is not valid to carry during that window. After 60 days you start over: new application, new fingerprints, new training course, full $90 fee.14North Carolina General Assembly. If You Are Denied

A denial comes with a written explanation of the grounds, delivered within the 45-day decision window.1North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina General Statutes 14-415.15 – Issuance or Denial of Permit You can appeal by filing a petition with a Wake County district court judge, who reviews the facts, the applicable law, and whether the Sheriff’s refusal was reasonable. If the judge overturns the denial, the Sheriff must issue the permit, and the court’s determination is final. The same appeal path applies to a revocation or a refused renewal. Hearings can take several months to reach the docket.
