Key Dates and Interest

Bills go out in July. If you haven’t received yours by September 1, call the Tax Administration office and ask for a duplicate rather than assuming you don’t owe anything.3Wake County Government. Tax Bill Help The taxes are legally due September 1, but the county doesn’t charge interest during the fall grace period.

January 5 is the real deadline. Payments received or postmarked by that date carry no interest. On January 6, a 2% charge attaches immediately, covering the period through February 1. After that, interest accrues at three-quarters of one percent for each additional month or partial month until the balance is paid in full.1North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina Code 105-360 – Due Date, Interest for Nonpayment of Taxes On a $3,000 bill, missing January 5 by a single day adds $60, and the monthly charges keep stacking.

Look Up Your Bill Online

The Wake County online tax portal lets you search by owner name or address and pull up a current copy of your bill. The balance shown updates in real time, so if January 5 has passed, any accrued interest is already reflected.

Two identifiers matter when you pay. The Bill Number appears on the face of your bill and changes annually, tying your payment to the correct tax year. The Real Estate ID (REID), sometimes called the Account Number, stays with the property as long as you own it and is what you use for online lookups.2Wake County Government. Tax Administration

McDowell Street, Suite 3800, Raleigh, open 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Regional offices in Fuquay-Varina, Wake Forest, Zebulon, and Raleigh also accept payments, though hours vary. What’s on the Bill

Your bill lists the property’s assessed value, which represents what the county determined it would sell for as of the last revaluation. Wake County’s most recent revaluation took effect January 1, 2024, and the next is scheduled for January 1, 2027.5Wake County Government. Revaluation Between revaluations, your assessed value generally holds steady unless you make improvements or the county corrects a data error.

Tax owed is calculated by multiplying the assessed value by the applicable tax rate, expressed per $100 of value.6Wake County Government. Tax Rates and Fees The Wake County general rate for 2025 is $0.5171 per $100.7Wake County Government. 2025 Property Tax Bills A home assessed at $400,000 owes about $2,068 to the county alone before any city or district charges are added.

Each taxing jurisdiction shows up as its own line. If your property is inside a municipality, you’ll see a city tax line stacked on the county levy. Properties in unincorporated areas may carry a Special Fire District charge instead. Check that these line items match where your parcel actually sits.

If You Have a Mortgage Escrow Account

When your lender pays your taxes through escrow, you generally won’t receive a paper bill. Wake County does not mail bills to mortgage companies. Most lenders use a tax service that pulls billing data directly from the county.8Wake County Government. Mortgage Escrow Accounts

One thing surprises escrow customers: even though your lender may forward funds to the tax service in August, the actual payment to Wake County usually doesn’t post until December. An unpaid balance showing in October is normal. What isn’t normal, and what deserves your attention, is a recent refinance, a lender change, or a payoff. Any of these can leave the tax bill without a responsible party. Confirm directly with the current lender that your taxes will be paid.

Relief Programs

North Carolina authorizes three property tax relief programs that Wake County administers. All three require an application filed by June 1 of the tax year, and eligibility depends on prior-year income.9Wake County Government. Need Help Paying Your Property Tax Bill

Elderly or Disabled Homestead Exclusion

Disabled Veteran Exclusion

Veterans with a service-connected, permanent, and total disability can exclude the first $45,000 of assessed value. Surviving spouses of qualifying veterans who have not remarried also qualify.11North Carolina General Assembly. You cannot combine this exclusion with the elderly or disabled homestead exclusion on the same property.

Circuit Breaker Deferment

Deferred taxes are not forgiven. When you sell the home, stop using it as your primary residence, or pass away, the last three years of deferred taxes become due with interest calculated from the original due dates. This program fits homeowners who plan to stay put and need cash flow relief now.

If Your Assessed Value Looks Wrong

Two paths exist for challenging your value: an informal review with Tax Administration staff, or a formal appeal to the Wake County Board of Equalization and Review.

The informal review is faster. You contact Tax Administration and present evidence that your assessed value doesn’t reflect fair market value: recent sales of comparable homes in your neighborhood, documentation of damage or defects the county didn’t account for, or errors in the property record such as wrong square footage or a phantom bathroom. Wake County provides a comparable sales search tool that generates supporting reports.12Wake County Government. Revaluation FAQ

If that doesn’t resolve things, you can file a formal appeal with the Board of Equalization and Review. The Board begins accepting appeals in January, and the deadline typically falls in early to mid-April, with the exact adjournment date set annually by the Board of Commissioners. If the county changes your assessed value after the Board has adjourned, you have until December 31 to appeal that change.13Wake County Government. Appealing Tax Values The strongest appeals rely on specific comparable sales from the county’s own records, a clear explanation of why those comparables support a lower value, and documentation of physical issues affecting the property. A private appraisal can help but usually costs several hundred dollars, so weigh that against the potential savings.

If You Don’t Pay

Wake County can begin collection actions, including foreclosure, as soon as an account becomes delinquent. The first step is advertising the delinquent account in The News & Observer, which usually happens about two months after the delinquency date.14Wake County Government. Delinquent Taxes State law gives the county up to 10 years from the original due date to pursue collection, though in practice it moves much sooner.

If you can’t cover the bill by January 5, contact Tax Administration before the deadline. Reaching out early is a much better position than watching interest, legal costs, and foreclosure fees accumulate on top of the original tax.
