The Wake County sales tax rate is 7.25% on most retail purchases. That combined rate includes North Carolina’s 4.75% state tax, 2% in local taxes, and a 0.5% transit tax. Several common purchases work differently: groceries are taxed at 2%, restaurant meals carry an extra 1%, hotel stays carry an extra 6%, cars are taxed under a separate highway-use tax, and prescriptions are exempt.
What Makes Up the 7.25%
The rate you see at the register is four separate taxes collected together:

Groceries Are Taxed at 2%

Restaurant Meals Carry an Extra 1%

Hotels and Short-Term Rentals Carry an Extra 6%
Short-term lodging faces two layers. The rental of a hotel room, motel, inn, Airbnb, or VRBO is first subject to the general state and local sales tax. On top of that, Wake County levies a 6% room occupancy tax on gross receipts.9Wake County Government. Room Occupancy Tax
Two exceptions apply. A guest who stays at the same property for at least 90 consecutive days is treated as a permanent resident, and neither the occupancy tax nor the state sales tax on accommodations applies. The occupancy tax also does not apply to accommodations provided by nonprofits in furtherance of their nonprofit purpose.9Wake County Government. Room Occupancy Tax
Cars Are Taxed Under a Separate Rule
Buying a car in Wake County does not trigger the 7.25% sales tax. North Carolina instead charges a highway-use tax at a flat 3% of the purchase price, paid when you title the vehicle with the DMV rather than at the dealership register.10North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina Code Chapter 105 Article 5A – Highway Use Tax
The 3% applies to the full purchase price of a standard passenger vehicle with no cap. For commercial motor vehicles and recreational vehicles, the tax is capped at $2,000 per title. On a $50,000 passenger car, the highway-use tax is $1,500, compared to the $3,625 that the 7.25% sales tax would produce.
What Is Exempt
Prescription drugs are fully exempt from North Carolina sales and use tax. The exemption covers medications federal law requires to be dispensed only by prescription, over-the-counter drugs sold on a prescription, and insulin.11North Carolina General Assembly.
