Wasco County Tax Lot Map: GIS Search, Parcel Data, Accuracy

The Wasco County tax lot map is available free through the county GIS Division’s interactive web map, which lets you look up any parcel by address or taxlot number and see its boundary, acreage, and assessor record. The same portal shows zoning overlays, aerial imagery, and neighboring parcels. Before you rely on anything you see there, understand what the map is and what it isn’t: it’s an administrative tool for assessment, not a legal survey.

What You Need Before You Search

You need at least one identifier to pull up a parcel. The usual options are the situs address, the tax account number, or the map and taxlot number. All three appear on the annual property tax statement mailed each October. If the statement is gone, a recorded deed from the County Clerk will carry the legal description and map reference.

If you only have partial information, the county’s property search tool accepts an account number, alternate account number, or street address and returns the assessor’s record for that parcel, including the map and taxlot number you’ll feed into the GIS portal.1Wasco County. Property Search The Assessment and Taxation office can also look it up by phone at 541-506-2510. Their counter is at 511 Washington Street, Suite 208, in The Dalles, open Monday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.2Wasco County. Assessment and Taxation Office

Reading a Wasco County Taxlot Number

Oregon tax lot numbers are built on the federal Public Land Survey System. The state is laid out in a grid of six-mile-square townships numbered north or south of the Oregon Base Line and east or west of the Willamette Meridian. Each township contains 36 sections of roughly a square mile, and sections split further into quarter sections and sixteenth sections.

A Wasco County taxlot number like 01N-13E-36 means Township 1 North, Range 13 East, Section 36. Additional digits narrow the location to a quarter section and the individual lot. Once you can read the number on your tax statement, finding the parcel on the map is straightforward.

Using the GIS Web Map

The GIS Division’s web map opens in any browser without an account or fee and loads to a countywide view. Type an address or taxlot number into the search bar and the map zooms to the parcel and highlights its boundary.3Wasco County. GIS Division

Navigation is standard. Drag to pan, scroll to zoom, click a parcel for its attribute data. You can switch between a cartographic basemap and aerial satellite imagery, and toggle layers on and off to overlay tax lot boundaries, zoning districts, and other county features. A side toolbar includes print, measure distance, and measure area tools.

The data on the web map is not real-time. The GIS Division refreshes its layers periodically, and the county’s own web map page tells users to contact Assessment and Taxation to verify current taxlot information.4Wasco County. Web Map A recent partition, lot line adjustment, or ownership change may not yet appear in the GIS layers even after it has been recorded.

What a Parcel Click Shows You

Clicking a parcel typically brings up its map and taxlot number, account number, acreage, situs address, and ownership information from the assessor’s records. The map itself shows the shape and relative dimensions of the lot, how it sits against neighboring parcels, and where it meets roads and public rights-of-way. Older survey annotations sometimes give dimensions in chains, a surveying unit equal to 66 feet, depending on when the original survey was done.

Layers can also show how a parcel relates to zoning designations and overlay districts under the Wasco County Land Use and Development Ordinance. Easements and rights-of-way may show as dashed or hatched lines. Common abbreviations include R/W for right-of-way, U/E for utility easement, and D/E for drainage easement. Those notations flag restrictions that aren’t obvious from a plain boundary view.

How Accurate Is the Map?

Not accurate enough to build on. Tax lot maps are administrative tools for assessment, and the county says so plainly. Its official disclaimer states that Wasco County “makes no representation or warranty of any kind, and in particular, this product, its accuracy, labeling, dimensions, property boundaries, or placement or location of any map features thereon.”4Wasco County. In practice, don’t build a fence, pour a foundation, or place a structure based on where the GIS map shows your property line. The lines on screen represent legal descriptions from county records, but they can be off by several feet due to digitization tolerances, projection distortions, or outdated source surveys. Only a licensed professional land surveyor can set legally binding boundary markers on the ground. For construction, a building permit, or a boundary dispute with a neighbor, a professional survey isn’t optional.

Ordering a Printed Map

The GIS Division will produce custom printed maps on request. Prices run from $9.31 for a standard 8.5-by-11-inch print up to $41.91 for a large-format 36-by-48-inch print. Additional copies of the same map at smaller sizes start at $1.74 for each extra 8.5-by-11.5Wasco County. GIS Price Information

Order by contacting the GIS Division or stopping by the county offices in The Dalles. Printed maps are useful for permit applications, real estate transactions, and legal proceedings where a screen capture won’t be accepted. The same accuracy disclaimer applies to a printed map as to the digital version.

If the Map Shows the Wrong Information

If a tax lot map or assessor record shows incorrect acreage, lot size, or a boundary that doesn’t match your deed, start with a call to the Assessment Department and ask for an appraiser review. Simple data errors, like wrong square footage or lot dimensions, often get corrected at that stage without a formal hearing.

If that doesn’t resolve it, Wasco County’s Property Value Appeals Board hears petitions for reductions in real market value, maximum assessed value, specially assessed value, and assessed value, along with corrections under ORS 311.208.6Wasco County. Property Value Appeals Board The filing window opens when tax statements are mailed in October and closes at midnight on December 31. Petitions go to the Wasco County Clerk’s office in writing, must state the facts and grounds, and must be signed under oath.7Oregon State Legislature. Oregon Revised Statutes Chapter 309 – Property Tax Appeals The board meets in March to hear cases.

If you go to a hearing, the burden of proof is on you. Strong evidence includes a professional survey showing the correct boundaries, your recorded deed, building permits, and the assessor’s property record card checked line by line against what’s actually on your property.6Wasco County.
