If you’re 70 or older, Washington driver’s license renewal must be done in person at a Department of Licensing (DOL) office. Online and mail renewal are not available at that age. Why the In-Person Rule Kicks In at 70
Washington removes the online renewal option once you turn 70.1Washington State Department of Licensing. Renew Driver License Coming in lets DOL staff run a vision test at the counter and see you in person. That’s the extent of the added scrutiny for a standard renewal.
You can renew up to one year before your license expires, so there’s no reason to wait.2Washington State Department of Licensing. DOL does not guarantee a mailed reminder, so the expiration date printed on your current card is the reliable one to watch.
What to Bring
Washington law requires DOL to verify your identity before issuing a renewed license.3Washington State Legislature. Washington Code RCW 46.20.035 – Proof of Identity Acceptable documents are photo-based: a current or recently expired driver’s license, a state-issued ID card, a U.S. passport, a military ID, or a federal or state government employee ID with your photo and signature.4Legal Information Institute. Washington Administrative Code 308-104-040 – Drivers Licenses for Identification and Identicards Utility bills and bank statements are not accepted as identity documents.
If your name and address haven’t changed, your current license is usually enough. If your name has changed since your last renewal because of marriage or a court order, bring the legal document so DOL can update the record. If you wear glasses or contacts to drive, bring them; you’ll need them for the vision test.
The Vision Screening
Every in-person renewal includes a vision test at the counter, administered with an optical screening device. You need visual acuity of at least 20/40 in at least one eye, with or without corrective lenses.5Washington State Legislature. Washington Code WAC 308-104-010 – Vision Screening
If you don’t meet the standard at the counter, DOL will ask you to get an exam from a licensed ophthalmologist or optometrist. The eye specialist fills out a Visual Examination Report on a DOL form, documenting your acuity and any other findings relevant to safe driving.5Washington State Legislature. Fees
A standard license renewal costs $10 per year. You choose either a six-year term for $61 or an eight-year term for $81.1Washington State Department of Licensing. Renew Driver License Endorsements such as a motorcycle endorsement add to the total.
An Enhanced Driver License (EDL) costs more: $103 for six years or $137 for eight years. Adding a motorcycle endorsement brings those to $133 and $177.7Washington State Department of Licensing. Driver Licensing Fees
Renew more than 60 days after your license expires and Washington adds a $10 late penalty on top of the renewal fee. Two narrow exceptions apply: if you were out of state and renew within 60 days of returning, or if you were incapacitated and renew within 60 days of recovery.8Washington State Legislature. What Happens at the Office
Appointment availability varies by DOL office, and you can check and book through the DOL website.9Washington State Department of Licensing. Appointments and Locations Show up a few minutes early to check in.
At the counter, the agent verifies your ID, runs the vision screening, and takes a new photo. You pay the fee. The agent then issues a temporary paper license on the spot that lets you drive legally for up to 45 days, and your permanent card arrives by mail, typically within 7 to 10 days.10Washington State Department of Licensing. One caveat if you’re flying soon: TSA does not accept a temporary paper license as valid identification.11Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint Bring your passport or another TSA-accepted ID to the airport until the permanent card arrives.
Should You Upgrade to an Enhanced Driver License?
REAL ID enforcement for domestic air travel began on May 7, 2025, and a standard Washington driver license alone is no longer accepted at TSA airport checkpoints.12Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID Washington’s standard license is not REAL ID-compliant.
The Enhanced Driver License confirms your identity and U.S. citizenship, works as a REAL ID at airport security, and doubles as a border-crossing document for land and sea travel to Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean.13Washington State Department of Licensing. If You Miss the Deadline
Driving with an expired license in Washington is a traffic infraction carrying a $250 fine. If you get a valid license after being cited and show proof to the court in person or by mail, the fine drops to $50.15Washington State Legislature. Washington Code RCW 46.20.015 An expired license can also create insurance problems if you’re in a crash during that window.
The $10 late-renewal penalty only kicks in if you wait more than 60 days past expiration.8Washington State Legislature. Washington Code RCW 46.20.181 – Expiration Date, Renewal, Fees, Penalty If your birthday passes and you catch it a week later, you still have a reasonable window to renew without the extra charge. Try not to drive to the DOL office on an expired license.
When DOL Can Require a Re-Examination
Turning 70 does not by itself trigger a driving test or medical review. Separately from routine renewal, though, Washington law lets DOL require a driver to submit to re-examination at any time if the department has reason to believe the driver is no longer fit to hold a license.16Washington State Legislature. Washington Code RCW 46.20.305 That can include a driving skills test, a written test, or a medical evaluation signed by a licensed physician.
After a re-examination, DOL can let you keep your full license, add restrictions such as daytime-only driving, suspend the license, or revoke it. Refusing or neglecting to appear for a required exam is itself grounds for suspension.16Washington State Legislature.
