What You Can Do at the Washington Office

Washington operates as both a Licensing Center and a Vehicle Center out of the same building, which is less common than you might think. That means license transactions and vehicle transactions are both available on site.2New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Facility Locations

The Licensing Center side handles transactions tied to you as a driver, including:4New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Licensing Centers

  • First-time permits and licenses, standard or REAL ID, with the knowledge and vision tests
  • License renewals that cannot be done online
  • Non-driver ID cards
  • Out-of-state license transfers
  • Commercial driver license permits and endorsements
  • REAL ID upgrades from a standard license5New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Agency Services

The Vehicle Center side handles registrations, title transfers, and similar vehicle paperwork. The two sides run on separate appointment tracks, so when you book, pick the correct service type. Choosing “Licensing Center” for a title transfer, or “Vehicle Center” for a permit, will put you in the wrong queue.5New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Agency Services

How to Book, Change, or Cancel an Appointment

Appointments are required for all in-person transactions. Book through the MVC’s online scheduling portal at telegov.njportal.com. You will get a confirmation email. Bring it with you on your phone or printed. To change or cancel, use the link in that confirmation email; the system lets you update location, date, time, or your details, and a new confirmation goes out after any change.7New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. What to Bring

New Jersey uses a 6 Points of ID system. You need documents totaling at least six points, plus proof of your Social Security number and proof of your New Jersey address. Common document values:

  • 4-point documents: U.S. birth certificate; U.S. passport, current or expired less than three years
  • 2-point documents: school photo ID with transcript; college photo ID with transcript
  • 1-point documents: Social Security card, bank statement, government-issued letter (no more than two 1-point documents count)3New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. 6 Point ID Brochure

A REAL ID requires two separate address documents.9New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. REAL ID Document Selector

Documents not in English need a certified English translation, and no primary or secondary document can be expired more than three years.10New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Standard License and Non-Driver ID Requirements
