To get a social work license in Washington State, you need a master’s or doctoral degree in social work from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, supervised postgraduate experience in the track you choose, a passing score on the matching Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) exam, and an approved application submitted to the Department of Health. The combined application and initial license fee is $186, plus a separate fingerprint-based background check.1Washington State Department of Health. Social Worker and Social Worker Associate – Licensing Information Everything else depends on which of Washington’s two full licenses you’re pursuing.
Pick Your Track: LICSW or LASW
Washington issues social work credentials under Chapter 18.225 RCW, and the first decision you make shapes every requirement that follows. The Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) is the clinical license. It lets you diagnose and treat mental and emotional disorders, provide psychotherapy to individuals, couples, families, and groups, conduct clinical assessments, and supervise other clinical social workers.2Washington State Legislature. WAC 246-809-320 Most insurance panels and behavioral health agencies require it for independent clinical practice.
The Licensed Advanced Social Worker (LASW) covers non-clinical practice: social work theory and methods, interviewing, counseling, advocacy, consultation, program design, research, and community organization. An LASW cannot diagnose or treat mental and emotional disorders.3Washington State Legislature. WAC 246-809-321 – Behavioral Health Professionals It fits roles in child welfare, school social work, hospital discharge planning, and agency leadership.
If you have your graduate degree but haven’t completed the supervised hours yet, you can’t start logging those hours until you hold the matching associate credential: the Licensed Social Work Associate Independent Clinical for the LICSW track, or the Licensed Social Work Associate Advanced for the LASW track. The application fee for either associate credential is $51.1Washington State Department of Health. Social Worker and Social Worker Associate – Licensing Information
Education
Both full licenses require a master’s degree in social work from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, or a social work doctorate from an accredited university.4Washington State Legislature. RCW 18.225.090 – Issuance of License, Requirements Your school sends official transcripts directly to the Department of Health credentialing office.
Supervised Experience Hours
This is the biggest time investment, and the requirements differ sharply between the two tracks.
LICSW Hours
You need at least 3,000 hours of postgraduate supervised experience over no fewer than two years. Of those, at least 1,000 must be direct client contact supervised by a licensed independent clinical social worker.5Washington State Legislature. WAC 246-809-330 You also need 100 hours of direct supervision:
- 70 hours must be with an LICSW.
- 30 hours may be with another equally qualified licensed mental health practitioner.
- 60 of the 100 must be one-to-one; the remaining 40 may be one-to-one or group.
LASW Hours
You also need at least 3,000 hours of postgraduate supervised experience, with at least 800 of those in direct client contact.6Washington State Department of Health. Social Worker and Social Worker Associate – Licensing Requirements Direct supervision totals 90 hours from an LICSW or LASW who has been licensed for at least two years:4Washington State Legislature. RCW 18.225.090 – Issuance of License, Requirements
- 50 hours with a licensed social worker (LICSW or LASW).
- 40 hours may be with an equally qualified licensed mental health practitioner, all one-to-one.
Credit for Substance Use Disorder Experience
If you have at least three years of experience as a substance use disorder professional within the past ten years, the Department of Health reduces the total experience requirement by about 10%, bringing either track down to 2,700 hours.6Washington State Department of Health. The ASWB Exam
LICSW candidates take the ASWB Clinical exam. LASW candidates take the Advanced Generalist exam. Registration is $260 for either one.7Association of Social Work Boards. Exam
If you don’t pass, ASWB requires a 90-day waiting period before you can retake it.8Association of Social Work Boards. If You Fail the Exam Washington may also cap total attempts, so confirm current retake rules with the Department of Health before scheduling.
Need testing accommodations for a disability or health condition? Request them through your ASWB account before you register, not after. You’ll submit your diagnosis and a personal statement, and for a learning disability, your most recent psychological evaluation.9Association of Social Work Boards. Application, Fees, and Background Check
Applications go through Washington’s online health professions portal. Before you start, pull together everything the department will ask for:
- Official transcripts sent directly from your school to the Department of Health.
- Verification of post-degree experience from each supervisor who oversaw your required hours, listing the type and number of hours completed.
- Formal verification from any other state where you hold or have held a license.
- Disclosure of any criminal convictions, civil judgments, or professional disciplinary actions, with explanations.
Supervisors are usually the bottleneck. Reach out early, because tracking down someone who oversaw your work years ago takes longer than you’d expect.
The combined application and initial license fee is $186 for an LICSW or LASW, and $51 for an associate credential. Both amounts include a $16 fee for access to the University of Washington HEALWA research database.1Washington State Department of Health. Social Worker and Social Worker Associate – Licensing Information
Every new applicant also has to complete a fingerprint-based background check through a state-approved vendor and pay that vendor directly. Washington uses IdentoGO, and fees vary by location, so budget separately on top of the application fee.
Processing generally runs four to eight weeks once the Department of Health has all your documents. The department emails you if anything is missing, and you can check status through the online provider lookup tool.
If You’re Already Licensed in Another State
You may be able to license in Washington without retaking the ASWB exam if the Department of Health finds your current state’s standards substantially equivalent to Washington’s. To qualify, you must have held a credential in good standing within the past twelve months and have no disciplinary record or disqualifying criminal history.10Cornell Law Institute. Washington Administrative Code 246-809-010 – Definitions
The department typically issues a probationary license while it evaluates whether your education or experience leaves any gaps. During that probationary period, you may only practice within a licensed or certified service provider setting, and the department may require additional coursework or supervised hours before converting to a full license.
Washington has also enacted the Social Work Licensure Compact under Chapter 18.321 RCW, which is intended to let clinical social workers in member states practice across state lines without separate licenses.11Washington State Legislature. Chapter 18.321 RCW – Social Work Licensure Compact The compact has activated, but multistate licenses are not yet being issued; implementation is expected to take 12 to 24 months from activation.12Social Work Licensure Compact. Social Work Licensure Compact Until then, you still need a Washington license to practice in Washington.
Keeping the License: Renewal and Continuing Education
Both the LICSW and LASW renew every two years, and you must complete 32 hours of continuing education each cycle.13Washington State Legislature. WAC 246-809-630 Within those 32 hours, several topics are mandatory:
- At least 6 hours in ethics and law every two years, covering topics like the Uniform Disciplinary Act.
- At least 2 hours in professional roles and boundaries every two years, counted separately from the ethics requirement.
- At least 2 hours in health equity every four years.
- At least 6 hours in suicide assessment, treatment, and management every six years, from the department’s approved training list.14Washington State Department of Health. Social Worker and Social Worker Associate – Continuing Education
Associates follow a different schedule: 16 hours of CE per year, plus 6 hours of suicide assessment training after initial licensure and before the first renewal. The ethics-and-law and professional-roles requirements apply the same way as for full licensees, and those hours can count toward the annual 16-hour total in the year they’re completed.14Washington State Department of Health.
