Signs You Already Have a Pressure Problem
A temperature-and-pressure (T&P) relief valve that drips regularly is the clearest warning. One misconception is worth clearing up: the T&P relief valve does not substitute for an expansion tank. The T&P valve is a safety device that opens only at dangerously high pressure or temperature. It isn’t built to cycle every time the burner fires. Using it as your only expansion control wears the valve out, produces constant dripping, and can leave you with a valve that fails to open when it’s actually needed.
Sizing the Tank
Two variables drive sizing: water heater capacity in gallons and incoming water pressure in PSI. For most residential heaters up to about 50 gallons with inlet pressure at or below 70 PSI, a 2-gallon expansion tank is enough. For 80- to 100-gallon heaters, or where street pressure runs above 80 PSI, expect to move up to a 4- or 5-gallon tank. California law also requires every water heater up to 120 gallons to be braced, anchored, or strapped against earthquakes. What It Costs

Maintenance and Lifespan
