Start at the myDMV portal through the Colorado DMV website. Have your current license number, the issue date printed on your existing card, a valid email address, and a credit card ready. Once approved, your printed receipt and your old license act as a temporary credential until the permanent card arrives.
Renewing in Person at the Greeley Office

The office is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.5Colorado Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Documents to Bring
For a REAL ID-compliant renewal in person, Colorado requires proof of identity and lawful presence, your Social Security number, and proof of Colorado residency.7Colorado Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. REAL ID and Colorado Your SSN is verified electronically through the Social Security Administration, so you don’t necessarily need the physical card, but bringing it avoids delays if the electronic check fails.
Residency documents must show your current Colorado address. Utility bills, bank statements, and lease agreements are common examples; the Colorado DMV publishes the full accepted list on its website.8Colorado Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Required Identification Documents to Get Your Permit, Driver License, or Identification Card For identity, your current or expiring Colorado license usually works, and a valid U.S. passport is also accepted.
REAL ID or Standard?
Before you renew, decide which credential type you want. Since May 7, 2025, federal law requires a REAL ID-compliant license (marked with a star on the front) to board a commercial flight or enter a federal building.9Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID A standard Colorado license shows a black banner instead of a star, cannot be used for those purposes, and cannot later be upgraded to REAL ID-compliant status.7Colorado Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. If you already hold a REAL ID-compliant license and nothing has changed, online renewal carries the same credential forward. If you currently hold a standard license and want to switch, you’ll need to visit Greeley in person with the full set of identity and residency documents.
After You Renew
Your receipt and old license cover you until the plastic card arrives in the mail. Delivery usually takes 10 to 14 business days and can take up to 30 days. If the card hasn’t shown up after 30 days, the Colorado DMV directs you to apply for a replacement through its lost, stolen, or destroyed credential process.11Colorado Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Updating a Name or Address at Renewal
A move or a name change comes with its own 30-day deadlines, separate from the license expiration date. You must update your credential within 30 days of a name change by marriage, divorce, or court order,12Colorado Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle. Proof of Address
A name change disqualifies you from online renewal and requires an in-person visit, so plan to handle both at the same appointment. Update your name with the Social Security Administration first, because the DMV verifies your SSN electronically and the change takes 24 to 48 hours to process. Bring a certified document proving the change: a certified marriage certificate, a divorce decree that specifically states name restoration, or a court order of name change. Photocopies are not accepted. If your name has changed more than once, bring the certified paperwork for every transition so the technician can trace the full chain.12Colorado Department of Revenue – Motor Vehicle.
