The Weld County sales tax rate is 0% at the county level, which is unusual for a large Colorado Front Range county. In practice, what you actually pay depends entirely on where in the county the sale happens: the 2.9% state rate alone in unincorporated areas with no overlapping district, or a combined rate climbing to roughly 8.4% once a city tax and any special district levies are added on top.1Milliken, Colorado. What Makes Up the Rate at Any Given Address
Colorado’s statewide sales tax is 2.9%, imposed on retail sales of tangible personal property and certain services.2Justia Law. Colorado Code 39-26-106 – Schedule of Sales Tax That is the floor. Weld County adds nothing of its own, funding its services through property taxes and oil and gas revenue instead. So a transaction in an unincorporated part of the county, with no special district overlay, carries only the state rate.
Step inside any city, and the total changes immediately. The three largest Weld County municipalities set their rates like this:
- Greeley: 4.11% city rate, for a 7.01% base total before any special district additions.3City of Greeley. Sales Tax
- Evans: 4.5% city rate as of January 1, 2026. Combined with the Evans Fire Protection District’s 1% and the state rate, the total in Evans is 8.4%.4City of Evans. Sales and Use Tax
- Windsor: 3.65% city rate.5Windsor, CO – Official Website. Taxes
Smaller towns like Milliken, Firestone, Frederick, Johnstown, Ault, and Eaton each set their own rates. Because municipal rates change through ballot measures, the single most reliable reference is the Colorado Department of Revenue’s DR 1002 rate sheet, republished at the start of each year with every jurisdiction’s current rate.
Special districts can add another layer on top. The Regional Transportation District’s 1% sales tax applies to certain southern portions of Weld County annexed by municipalities like Longmont and Erie.6Erie, CO. Two stores a few blocks apart can owe different totals if one sits inside a special district and the other does not. The geographic lookup tools on the Department of Revenue website can confirm the exact combined rate for any specific address.
Groceries: State Exempt, Some Cities Not
Colorado exempts food purchased for home consumption from the 2.9% state tax, applied automatically at the register for qualifying items. Each local jurisdiction decides separately whether to exempt groceries from its own city tax, and the answer in Weld County depends on the town.8Colorado Department of Revenue. Among the state-collected municipalities, Firestone, Frederick, Hudson, Keenesburg, and Mead have adopted the exemption for their local tax. Johnstown, Milliken, Windsor, Fort Lupton, and Severance have not, so their local rate still applies to groceries even though the state portion does not.8Colorado Department of Revenue. Farm Equipment Exemption
Weld County is one of the top agricultural producers in the country, so the farm equipment exemption gets heavy use here. The state exempts farm tractors, implements of husbandry, irrigation equipment, dairy equipment, and aircraft used for crop work from state sales tax, provided the equipment is used primarily and directly in a for-profit farm operation.9Department of Revenue – Taxation. Sales and Use Tax Topics: Agriculture Leased or rented farm equipment must have a fair market value of at least $1,000 to qualify.
To claim it, the buyer gives the seller a completed Affidavit for Colorado Sales Tax Exemption for Farm Equipment (Form DR 0511), which the seller keeps for three years. If the equipment is later diverted to non-farming use, the buyer remains liable for the tax plus penalties and interest.9Department of Revenue – Taxation. Sales and Use Tax Topics: Agriculture Equipment used for office work, building maintenance, research, or hauling finished products to market does not qualify.
If You Run a Business: Licensing and Home-Rule Cities
Any business selling tangible goods at retail in Colorado must obtain a sales tax license before its first sale. Operating without one is a petty offense and can also trigger a civil penalty of $50 per day, up to $1,000.10Justia Law. Colorado Code 39-26-103 – Licenses – Fee – Revocation – Definition New businesses apply through MyBizColorado or by submitting the Colorado Sales Tax and Withholding Account Application (Form CR 0100).11Department of Revenue – Taxation. Standard Retail License The license runs through December 31 of the year after it is issued; renewals use Form DR 0594.12Department of Revenue – Taxation. Renew Your Sales Tax License
A state license does not cover home-rule cities, which collect and administer their own local sales tax independently.13Colorado Department of Revenue. SUTS Participating Jurisdictions If you operate in any of those, you need to register and file with the city as well. Greeley, for example, requires registration through its own Sales Tax and Business License portal; the city’s sales tax division can be reached at 970-350-9733.3City of Greeley. Sales Tax
Colorado’s Sales and Use Tax System (SUTS) lets businesses file returns for multiple jurisdictions through a single state-run portal. All four Weld County home-rule cities now participate, so city and state returns can go through the same system.14Department of Revenue – Taxation. SUTS Participating Jurisdictions Home-rule cities can also define their own tax base, so what counts as taxable may differ slightly from the state’s definition. When unsure, call the city.
Filing Frequency, Deadlines, and Penalties
Sales tax returns are filed through Colorado Revenue Online.15Department of Revenue – Taxation. File Sales Tax on Revenue Online Each business location gets its own return. Filing frequency depends on tax liability:16Department of Revenue – Taxation. Sales Tax Filing Information
- Monthly if liability is $600 or more per month, due by the 20th of the following month.
- Quarterly if liability is under $600 per month, due April 20, July 20, October 20, and January 20.
- Annually if liability is $15 or less per month, due January 20.
Starting January 1, 2026, retailers with annual gross sales of $500,000 or more in the prior calendar year must file electronically.17Department of Revenue – Taxation. Sales and Use Tax Smaller retailers can still file electronically but are not required to.
Missing a deadline triggers a penalty equal to the greater of $15 or 10% of the unpaid tax, plus 0.5% for each month the balance remains outstanding, up to a combined maximum of 18%. Interest also accrues until the balance is paid.18Justia Law. Use Tax on Out-of-State Purchases
When a Weld County business buys equipment, supplies, or inventory from an out-of-state seller that does not charge Colorado sales tax, the business owes use tax at the same combined rate that would have applied to a local purchase. Retailers with active use tax accounts must file a return every period, even when no tax is due for that period.20Colorado Department of Revenue – Taxation. DR 0173 – Retailer’s Use Tax Return This catches a lot of businesses off guard, particularly those ordering online from vendors without a Colorado presence. The use tax is what keeps out-of-state purchases from carrying a built-in tax advantage over buying from a local supplier.
