What You’ll See Inside

The dome is the main event. It rises 292 feet, roughly four feet taller than the dome of the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., and its copper and lead roof is covered in 23-karat gold leaf.8West Virginia Legislature. Hanging from a 54-foot gold chain in the rotunda is a hand-cut crystal chandelier weighing about 4,000 pounds, with the lighting power of 15,000 candles. It’s lowered to the ground floor for cleaning once every four years, before the governor’s inauguration. The Senate and House chambers have their own chandeliers, each built from 10,000 pieces of rock crystal.10West Virginia History OnView. State Capitol Building and Grounds, Charleston, W. Va.
