In Georgia, your vehicle registration expires at midnight on your birthday, and the Georgia vehicle registration renewal period opens 30 days before that date.1Department of Revenue. Georgia County Registration Renewal Periods Vary Businesses renew on a schedule tied to the first letter of the business name instead. Miss the deadline and penalties start the next day, so the safest move is to renew somewhere inside that 30-day window.
When Your Registration Expires
For an individual owner, the expiration date is the birthday of the first person listed on the tag receipt. If a vehicle is co-owned, only that first-listed birthday matters. Your renewal notice from the Department of Revenue will confirm the exact date.
Businesses follow a separate calendar based on the first letter of the business name rather than any individual’s birthday.1Department of Revenue. Georgia County Registration Renewal Periods Vary
A small number of Georgia counties use a different renewal calendar entirely. Your renewal notice will specify the period that applies in your county, so check it rather than assuming the birthday rule applies to you.
The 30-day window before your expiration date is the practical renewal period. Try to renew earlier and the system generally won’t let you. Wait past your birthday and the late fees begin immediately.
How to Renew Before the Deadline
Georgia gives you three ways to renew, and two of them skip the tag office entirely.
Online. Many counties participate in the DRIVES e-Services portal. You renew using your license plate number or VIN together with your driver’s license number, and you can pay by debit card, credit card, or electronic check. The system shows the total before you commit and lets you cancel at any point.2Department of Revenue. Renew Vehicle Registration Your renewal notice will say whether online renewal is available in your county.
Self-service kiosk. If your county is in the kiosk program, you can renew at any kiosk in Georgia regardless of which county houses it. A barcode scan from your renewal notice usually finishes the whole transaction in under a minute, and the kiosk prints your decal and documents on the spot. Kiosks take major credit and debit cards, and some take cash.3Department of Revenue. MVD Self-Service Tag Kiosk FAQ
In person. You can always renew at your county tag office. Bring your renewal notice, proof of insurance if it hasn’t been filed electronically by your insurer, and your emissions inspection result if your county requires one.
Whichever method you use, two things must already be in order before the system will process your renewal: valid Georgia liability insurance on file with the Department of Revenue, and, in the 13 metro Atlanta counties, a current passing emissions inspection.
What It Costs to Renew
The standard annual registration fee for a passenger car or light pickup is $20.4Department of Revenue. Motor Vehicles Fees, Fines, and Penalties If your vehicle was titled in Georgia on or after March 1, 2013, it’s in the Title Ad Valorem Tax system, meaning the TAVT was paid once at titling and no annual ad valorem property tax is due at renewal.
Specialty plates cost more. A prestige (vanity) plate carries a $35 annual special tag fee on top of the standard $20 registration.5Department of Revenue. Order Prestige and Specialty License Plates An antique or hobby vehicle plate renews at $20 for registration plus $35 to the state general treasury.6Georgia Department of Revenue Motor Vehicle Division. Penalties If You Miss the Deadline
Georgia hits a late registration from two directions.
The administrative penalty is 10% of any ad valorem tax owed plus 25% of your license plate fees, with a $5 minimum on the ad valorem portion.4Department of Revenue. Motor Vehicles Fees, Fines, and Penalties On a $20 plate fee alone, the 25% add-on is $5. If your vehicle still owes annual ad valorem tax, the percentage compounds against its assessed value, so the longer the gap, the larger the bill.
Driving the vehicle while it sits expired is a separate matter. Operating an unregistered vehicle on public roads is a misdemeanor under Georgia law. Anyone who rents, leases, or loans an unregistered vehicle faces a $100 fine per violation, and each day of operation counts as a separate offense.7Justia Law. Georgia Code 40-2-8 – Operation of Unregistered Vehicle Driving without a valid county decal carries a $25 fine for a first offense and $100 for subsequent violations.
Insurance Lapse Can Suspend Your Registration
This is where renewals go sideways for a lot of Georgia drivers. The state requires continuous liability coverage of at least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per incident for bodily injury, plus $25,000 per incident for property damage.8Office of the Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire. Auto Insurance If your coverage lapses for 10 or more consecutive days, the Department of Revenue treats it as a lapse on your registration record and mails a notice with a reinstatement fine.9Department of Revenue. Registration Suspension
Fail to pay that fine within 30 days of the notice and the registration is suspended outright. A suspended registration means the vehicle can’t legally be driven at all, and driving on a suspended, revoked, or canceled registration is itself a misdemeanor with additional penalties on top of the original reinstatement cost.9Department of Revenue. Registration Suspension If you’re switching insurers around renewal time, make sure the new policy’s effective date is on or before the old policy’s end date; a single-day gap can start the clock.
Emissions Testing Before You Can Renew
Thirteen metro Atlanta counties require a passing emissions test on file before the system will process your renewal: Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Paulding, and Rockdale.10Environmental Protection Division. Inspection and Maintenance (I/M) Unit The requirement comes from the federal Clean Air Act and applies to gasoline-powered cars and light-duty trucks weighing 8,500 pounds or less.
For 2026 registration, model years 2002 through 2023 need testing. The three newest model years (2024 and newer) are exempt, and so are vehicles 25 model years or older (2001 and earlier).11Georgia’s Clean Air Force. Frequently Asked Questions
If your vehicle fails, you can’t renew until it passes a retest after repairs. There is a repair waiver available for 2026 registration if you’ve spent at least $1,176 on qualifying emissions-related repairs and the vehicle still fails.12Georgia’s Clean Air Force. Repair Waivers Only completed repairs count. Inspection fees, taxes, warranty work, shop supplies, and miscellaneous charges don’t. If you do the work yourself or use an unlicensed shop, only the cost of parts applies toward the threshold.
Active-duty service members stationed outside the 13-county area can request a time extension on the emissions requirement. The application must include proof of out-of-area assignment, such as a copy of military orders or a letter from a supervising officer on military letterhead.13Georgia’s Clean Air Force. Military Out of Area Extension Application
Build the emissions test into your 30-day renewal window rather than leaving it for the last few days. A failed test close to your birthday leaves little room to make repairs, retest, and still renew on time.
