What Are Non-Tax Fees When Buying a Car in Texas?

The non-tax fees when buying a car in Texas usually add somewhere between $250 and $340 to the price of a typical passenger vehicle before sales tax enters the picture. That total covers a title application, the first year of registration, an inspection replacement fee, a small county charge, a temporary tag, and the dealer’s documentation fee. Some of those amounts are fixed by state law. Others are set by the dealership and worth questioning at the finance desk.

Title Application Fee

Every purchase requires a new title, and the application fee is either $28 or $33. Buyers in counties designated as federal air-quality nonattainment areas or as affected counties under the Health and Safety Code pay $33; everyone else pays $28.1State of Texas. Texas Transportation Code TRANSP 501.138 – Collection and Disposition of Fees Your county tax assessor-collector can confirm which category applies. Dealers normally file the title paperwork and remit the fee for you, so it appears on the buyer’s order rather than as a separate trip to the county office.

Registration Fee

The base annual registration fee for a passenger vehicle or light truck weighing 6,000 pounds or less is $50.75.2State of Texas. Texas Transportation Code Section 502.252 – Fee: Vehicles That Weigh 6,000 Pounds or Less Heavier vehicles pay more under the same subchapter. The first year is collected at the point of sale.

Electric and Plug-In Hybrid Surcharges

Battery-electric vehicles carry an extra $200 annual registration surcharge. Plug-in hybrids carry a $30 surcharge.3Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Schedule of Texas Registration Fees You pay the first year at initial registration and then each year at renewal.

Inspection Replacement Fee

Texas ended mandatory safety inspections for non-commercial vehicles on January 1, 2025, and replaced them with an inspection replacement fee collected at registration. Most vehicles owe $7.50 per year. A new vehicle of the current or preceding model year that has never been registered anywhere pays $16.75, which covers two years.4Texas Department of Public Safety. Vehicle Safety Inspection Changes Take Effect January 2025 Emissions testing is a separate requirement in certain metropolitan counties and does not replace this fee.

County Road and Bridge Fee

A county commissioners court may add a road and bridge fee of up to $10 to each registration.5Texas Public Law. Texas Transportation Code Section 502.401 – Optional County Fee for Road and Bridge Fund Not every county charges the full amount, and some skip it. A small processing and handling charge from the county tax office may also show up on your paperwork.

Temporary Buyer’s Tag

The dealer issues a temporary tag so you can drive the car home while permanent plates are processed. The fee is $5 and should appear as its own line on the buyer’s order.6Cornell Law School. 43 Texas Admin Code 215.155 – Buyers Temporary Tag

Dealer Documentation Fee

The doc fee pays the dealership for preparing the title application, filing the registration, and processing your sales contract. It is not a government charge. The money stays with the dealer.

Texas does not set a hard cap, but the administrative code creates a practical ceiling. A doc fee of $225 or less is presumed reasonable. Anything higher requires the dealer to file a written notification and cost analysis with the Office of Consumer Credit Commissioner and to justify the amount.7Cornell Law School. 7 Texas Admin Code 84.205 – Documentary Fee Most dealerships land between $150 and $225. A doc fee above $225 with no explanation is worth pushing back on. The contract must also include a disclosure stating the fee is not an official government charge or required by law.

Destination Charge on New Cars

New vehicles carry a manufacturer destination charge printed on the window sticker, currently in the neighborhood of $1,000 to $2,300 depending on the brand and model, with some luxury trucks running higher. The manufacturer sets this amount, not the dealer, so it is identical at every showroom carrying the same model. Used-car buyers do not pay it.

Optional Add-Ons to Watch For

Dealers frequently list products on the buyer’s order that look like standard charges but are entirely optional. Common ones include VIN etching, nitrogen-filled tires, paint protection film, fabric sealant, and anti-theft window coding. None are required by Texas law to title, register, or drive the vehicle.8Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Buying or Selling a Vehicle You can decline any of them before signing.

GAP Coverage

Guaranteed Asset Protection insurance covers the gap between your loan balance and the vehicle’s value if the car is totaled or stolen. Dealers usually sell it as a lump sum of $500 to $1,000 rolled into financing. The same coverage from your auto insurance carrier often costs around $60 to $80 per year, and Texas does not regulate the dealer price. What Happens If You File the Title Late

You have 30 days from the date the seller signs the vehicle over to file the title application. Active-duty military buyers get 60 days.9Texas.gov. Motor Vehicle Tax Guide – Dealers Miss day 30 and a $25 late fee kicks in. After day 60, another $25 accrues every 30 days, up to a $250 ceiling. When a licensed dealer is the seller, the dealer owes a $10 late fee instead.10Texas Public Law. Texas Transportation Code Section 501.146 – Title Transfer Late Fee The county tax office cannot waive these.

Sales-tax penalties stack on top. Miss the 30-day deadline for paying motor vehicle sales tax and you owe an automatic 5% penalty on the tax; miss another 30 days and it climbs to 10%, with a $1 minimum. Delayed paperwork can easily cost several hundred dollars.

Disabled Veteran Exemptions

A veteran with a service-connected disability rating of 50% or more, or 40% or more due to amputation of a lower extremity, qualifies for Disabled Veteran license plates at $3 for one vehicle. Standard registration and local fees still apply, but the specialty plate cost replaces the standard plate fee.11Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Application for Disabled Veteran License Plates and Parking Placards Qualifying veterans are also exempt from the $5 temporary tag fee. Bring your VA disability documentation to the dealership so the exemption applies at the point of sale rather than as a refund request later.

A Typical Total

For a standard non-electric passenger vehicle in a county that charges the full road and bridge fee, the mandatory government side looks like this:

  • Title application: $28 or $33
  • Registration: $50.75
  • Inspection replacement fee: $7.50, or $16.75 for a brand-new vehicle
  • County road and bridge fee: up to $10
  • Temporary buyer’s tag: $5

That comes to roughly $100 to $115 in government charges. Add a doc fee of $150 to $225 and the non-tax total sits between $250 and $340 for most buyers. EV buyers should budget another $200 for the surcharge, and new-car buyers will see the manufacturer’s destination charge on top. The only line items with any real flexibility are the dealer-imposed ones, so focus your questions there.
