Missouri’s hunter orange requirements apply during the firearms portions of deer and elk seasons and throughout the entire black bear season. If you are hunting any game during those windows, you need a solid hunter-orange hat or cap plus a solid hunter-orange shirt, vest, or coat, both plainly visible from every side.1Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Missouri Code 252.041 – Deer Hunting During Deer-Hunting Season With Firearms, Orange Colored Clothing Required, Violation, Penalty
When You Have to Wear It
Orange is required any time you hunt any species of game during firearms deer season. That covers the November portion, the youth portion, the antlerless portion, and the CWD portion, along with managed firearms deer hunts on designated conservation areas. It also applies during the firearms portion of elk season.2Missouri Department of Conservation. Hunter-Orange Requirement
A common misread: the rule is not limited to deer or elk hunters. If you are out chasing squirrels with a shotgun during firearms deer season, you need orange too, unless an exemption below fits your situation.3Missouri Secretary of State. 3 CSR 10-7 Wildlife Code – Chapter 7
Black bear season has a stricter rule. Orange is required for the entire season, including for archery hunters, with no exemptions.4Missouri Department of Conservation. Bear Hunting Regulations
Companions and mentors are covered as well. Anyone accompanying an elk hunter or a black bear hunter during those seasons must wear orange, and so must adult mentors supervising another hunter during firearms deer season or a managed firearms deer hunt.2Missouri Department of Conservation. What Counts as Hunter Orange
The law calls for two separate pieces: a hat or cap, plus a shirt, vest, or coat. Both must be the outermost layer and plainly visible from all sides.1Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Missouri Code 252.041 – Deer Hunting During Deer-Hunting Season With Firearms, Orange Colored Clothing Required, Violation, Penalty
Camouflage orange does not qualify. The broken pattern defeats the solid block of color the rule is built around, so an orange-camo vest paired with a solid orange hat still fails, because each garment has to meet the standard on its own.2Missouri Department of Conservation. Hunter-Orange Requirement
The statute treats “daylight fluorescent orange,” “blaze orange,” and “hunter orange” as the same thing. If a garment reads as unmistakably bright, solid orange with no pattern, it works.1Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Who Is Exempt
During firearms deer season, managed firearms deer hunts, or the firearms elk season, these hunters do not have to wear orange:2Missouri Department of Conservation. Hunter-Orange Requirement
- Migratory game bird hunters, including those after doves, ducks, and geese.
- Archery hunters inside city limits where firearm discharge is prohibited.
- Hunters on federal or state land where deer hunting is restricted to archery methods.
- Archery permit holders hunting during the alternative methods portion.
- Small game and furbearer hunters during the alternative methods portion.
- Small game and furbearer hunters during the elk firearms season.
- Hunters in counties outside the CWD Management Zone during the antlerless and CWD portions, because those counties are closed to firearms deer hunting then.
Black bear season has no exemptions. Whatever weapon you carry and whatever else you are hunting, if you are afield during bear season, you wear orange.4Missouri Department of Conservation. Bear Hunting Regulations
What Happens if You Skip the Orange
A violation is an infraction under Section 252.041. It is not a criminal offense, so there is no jail time and no criminal record.5Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Still, a citation means a fine plus court costs, and conservation agents, who hold full law enforcement authority, actively check compliance during firearms seasons. Ignoring the ticket can push the situation past a simple fine. When in doubt about whether an exemption fits your day in the field, the simpler move is to put on the orange.
