What Counts as Proof of Residency in Nevada?

To establish proof of residency in Nevada, you generally need two original documents that show your name and a Nevada street address. That is the Nevada DMV’s standard, and because the DMV’s list is the most detailed in the state, it works as a practical baseline for other situations too. Bring the wrong combination and you’ll be sent home to try again.1Nevada DMV. Proof of Identity and Residency

The Two-Document Rule and What Qualifies

Any two of the following, each showing your name and Nevada residential address, will satisfy the DMV:

  • Bank or credit card statements, and employment pay stubs.
  • A lease or rental agreement, a rent receipt, a mortgage document, or a property deed.
  • A utility bill from a public utility (electricity, gas, water) for a service address.
  • An insurance card, binder, or bill from any insurance agency.
  • A Nevada voter registration card, property tax record, or letter from a government social services agency.
  • A record from a Nevada educational institution showing enrollment, or a school-issued ID card listing your address.
  • Documentation from a hotel, motel, or RV park showing at least 30 consecutive days of residency in Nevada.1Nevada DMV. Proof of Identity and Residency

Active-duty military members establishing Nevada residency can use a Leave and Earnings Statement showing a Nevada address as one of the two documents.1Nevada DMV. Proof of Identity and Residency

Rules for the Documents Themselves

All documents must be originals or certified copies. Photocopies are not accepted. Original printouts from online accounts are fine, so a bank statement or utility bill downloaded as a PDF and printed at home will work.1Nevada DMV. Proof of Identity and Residency

Time-sensitive documents must be dated within the last 60 days. That includes bank statements, utility bills, and other records that reflect ongoing activity.2Nevada DMV. DMV 005 Certification of Nevada Residency A current lease, property deed, or voter registration card does not carry that 60-day window; it just needs to be current.

When Your Name Isn’t on Any Household Documents

Plenty of people don’t have utility bills or a lease in their own name. Nevada handles that with two certification forms.

The Certification of Nevada Residency form (DMV-005) lets another person who lives at the same address vouch for you. That person signs the form and provides one qualifying residency document in their own name at the shared address. They do not need to come to the DMV with you.2Nevada DMV. DMV 005 Certification of Nevada Residency This is the usual route for minors, dependents, and adults whose names simply aren’t on household paperwork.

For people experiencing homelessness, the Relief Agency and Shelter Certification form (DMV-115) does similar work. A shelter or social service agency representative completes the form to confirm the person resides at or receives services through the facility, and the DMV accepts it as one of the two required residency documents.3Nevada DMV. Students in University Housing

A record from a Nevada educational institution showing current enrollment, or a school-issued ID that lists a Nevada address, counts as one document.1Nevada DMV. Proof of Identity and Residency You still need a second. A bank statement or insurance document sent to your campus address usually fills that slot.

Hotel and RV Park Residents

If you live in a hotel, motel, or RV park, get a record from that establishment showing at least 30 consecutive days of residency in Nevada. That qualifies as proof of address.1Nevada DMV. Proof of Identity and Residency

Deadlines If You’ve Just Moved or Changed Address

New residents have 30 days after becoming a Nevada resident to obtain a Nevada driver’s license before driving in the state.4Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes Chapter 483 – Drivers Licenses – NRS 483.245 Vehicles must also be registered within the same 30 days.5Nevada DMV. Nevada Registration Requirements

Already have a Nevada license and moved to a new address? You have 30 days to notify the DMV.6Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes Chapter 483 – Drivers Licenses – NRS 483.390 Leaving the old address on file creates a mismatch between your license and your other residency documents, which complicates later transactions.

If you’re applying for a REAL ID-compliant license or ID, residency is only one piece; you also need proof of identity (such as a birth certificate or passport) and your Social Security number.7Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. New Resident Guide

Voter Registration

In-State Tuition

Qualifying for in-state tuition at Nevada System of Higher Education institutions requires 12 months of continuous Nevada residency before the semester you want to be classified as in-state.10University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Nevada Residency

Here’s the piece that catches students out: the 12-month clock doesn’t start until you change your driver’s license to a Nevada license.10University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Nevada Residency Move in August, delay the DMV visit until October, and the countdown begins in October. Getting the Nevada license immediately on arrival is the single most useful step for tuition reclassification. There is an exception for students whose families relocated to Nevada primarily for employment.

Legal Domicile and Tax Residency

Nevada has no state income tax, which makes claiming Nevada residency attractive to people whose income would otherwise be taxed elsewhere. Holding a Nevada license or owning property here does not, by itself, make you a Nevada resident for legal purposes. The Nevada Department of Taxation requires you to be physically present in the state during the entire period you claim residency.11State of Nevada Department of Taxation. Nevada Legal Residency

Under Nevada law, you can have multiple residences but only one legal domicile. Establishing domicile requires both physically living in Nevada and intending to remain here permanently. When a former state challenges your Nevada residency, evidence considered includes where you spend the majority of your time, where your spouse and dependents live, the address on your voter registration and driver’s license, where your vehicles are registered, where you receive mail, and the address on your tax documents and financial accounts.12Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes NRS 281.050 – Residence for Purposes of Eligibility for Office No single factor is decisive. A temporary absence does not destroy your domicile as long as you intend to return and haven’t established a permanent residence elsewhere.11State of Nevada Department of Taxation. Penalties for False Residency Information

Using a fake name, making a false statement, or concealing material information on a driver’s license or ID card application is a Category E felony in Nevada. The narrow exception is when the false information relates solely to age, which drops the charge to a misdemeanor.13Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes NRS 483.530 – Unlawful Uses of License

A Category E felony carries one to four years in prison, though courts are required to suspend the sentence and grant probation in most cases. Probation conditions can include up to one year in county jail, and the court can impose a fine of up to $5,000.14Nevada Public Law. NRS 193.130 – Categories and Punishment of Felonies Falsifying an address on a voter registration application is also a Category E felony under Nevada election law and carries the same penalty range, whether you register at an address where you don’t live or help someone else do so.
