When You File Sets Your Payday
Ohio’s weekly certification window opens on the Sunday after the benefit week ends. You can file any day from that Sunday forward, but you must submit within 21 days of the week’s end or you forfeit benefits for that week. ODJFS processes claims on business days only, so a Sunday certification typically enters processing Monday morning.

If you certify later in the week, your deposit shifts later too. A Wednesday filing generally means a Thursday or Friday deposit rather than a Tuesday one. There is no single “Ohio unemployment payday” that applies across the board.
Weekly Versus Biweekly Payments
Ohio unemployment is normally paid every two weeks. There is one way to change that: claimants who select both direct deposit and electronic correspondence receive weekly payments instead.2ODJFS Online. Anyone who skips either setting is placed on the biweekly cycle, usually loaded to a US Bank ReliaCard.
Direct Deposit
Direct deposit sends the payment straight into a checking or savings account. Under Senate Bill 302, the financial institution must have a physical location in Ohio where disputes can be handled in person.3Ohio Legislature. US Bank ReliaCard
Claimants who do not choose direct deposit receive a US Bank ReliaCard, a Visa prepaid debit card, and benefits are loaded to it as each payment is issued. Funds are available as soon as the card is credited. The card has no monthly fee, no charge for domestic purchases, and no fee at in-network ATMs. Out-of-network ATM withdrawals and some other transactions can carry fees, so read the cardholder agreement that arrives with the card.
Your First Payment Will Not Follow This Schedule
Ohio requires a one-week unpaid waiting period at the start of every claim, and that week cannot be waived.4Ohio Legislative Service Commission. The delay is routine and does not mean anything has gone wrong. ODJFS needs the time to verify employment history and earnings. Once the first payment clears, the regular 24-to-48-hour rhythm described above takes over.
Holidays and Other Reasons a Deposit Runs Late
Federal bank holidays shut down the electronic payment systems that move money between ODJFS and your bank. When a holiday falls on a weekday, deposits typically arrive a day or two later than the usual pattern. Federal holidays that affect payment processing in 2026 include:

- Martin Luther King Jr. Day: January 19
- Presidents’ Day: February 16
- Memorial Day: May 25
- Juneteenth: June 19
- Independence Day: July 3 (observed; July 4 falls on a Saturday)

Holidays are not the only reason payments stall. ODJFS will hold a payment if your certification has incomplete answers, if the information you gave conflicts with something on file, or if the agency is waiting on documentation. If a payment status stays stuck for more than a week without explanation, call ODJFS rather than waiting it out.
How to Check Where Your Payment Is
The fastest way to see the status of a payment is to log into your online benefits account through the ODJFS website.5Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. A “paid” status with a date means the money is on its way within 24 to 48 hours.
Any other status means the claim is still processing or something needs your attention. Common holds include identity verification requests, employer protests, and missing answers on the weekly certification. When you call about a stuck payment, have your claimant ID or Social Security number ready.
