What Do I Need to Bring to Register My Car in Florida?

To register a car in Florida, bring proof of ownership, proof of Florida insurance, a valid photo ID, and a completed title application (HSMV Form 82040), plus payment for the fees. Budget around $225 or more for a first-time registration on top of title, plate, and weight-based charges. You’ll handle it in person at your county tax collector’s office, a private tag agency, or an FLHSMV service center.1Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Proof That You Own the Vehicle

Which ownership document you bring depends on where the car came from.

  • New vehicle from a dealer: the Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin (MCO) the dealer hands over at sale, plus an odometer disclosure signed by both dealer and buyer.1Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Motor Vehicle Registrations
  • Used vehicle already titled in Florida: the original Florida Certificate of Title, with the seller’s signature, your name as buyer, the selling price, and the odometer reading filled in on the title.3Pasco County Tax Collector. Application for Title and Initial Registration
  • Vehicle titled in another state: the original out-of-state title. If the previous state doesn’t issue titles, bring the registration certificate or another official ownership document.3Pasco County Tax Collector. Application for Title and Initial Registration
  • Leased vehicle: a copy of the lease agreement and a power of attorney from the leasing company authorizing the registration.

If a lienholder in another state is holding your title, you’ll need that lien released so the original title can come to Florida. A bill of sale isn’t strictly required, but it’s worth bringing for any private-party sale because it documents the price, date, and vehicle details.

Inherited and gifted vehicles have extra steps. An heir generally needs the signed title (or a duplicate title application), a death certificate, an affidavit that the estate isn’t indebted, and either Letters of Administration or the “Release of Heirs” section of the HSMV 82040.4Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Proof of Florida Insurance

Florida won’t register a four-wheeled vehicle without proof of two specific coverages: Personal Injury Protection (PIP) at $10,000 minimum and Property Damage Liability (PDL) at $10,000 minimum. The policy has to come from an insurance company licensed to sell coverage in Florida.6Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Florida Insurance Requirements

Bring one of the following: your insurance card, the policy declaration page, or a binder from your agent. Whatever you bring needs to show the vehicle’s VIN, make, year, and the insurer’s name and coverage identification number.7Statutes and Constitution: View Statutes: Online Sunshine. Coverage must stay in force for the entire registration period, even if the car sits parked. A lapse triggers suspension of your registration and driving privileges for up to three years, with reinstatement fees starting at $150 for a first lapse, $250 for a second, and $500 for any additional lapse within three years of the first.6Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Valid ID for Every Owner

Every person listed on the registration needs valid identification. A Florida driver’s license or Florida ID card is the standard. If you don’t yet have one, a valid driver’s license or ID from another state works, and so does a valid passport.7Statutes and Constitution: View Statutes: Online Sunshine. Florida Code 320.02 – Registration Required; Application for Registration; Forms If the vehicle is going in a business name, bring the federal employer identification number or proof the business is authorized to operate in Florida.

The name on your ID must match the name going on the title. If you’ve had a name change through marriage or a court order and your ID hasn’t caught up, bring the marriage certificate or court order so the office can process the paperwork under the correct name.

Active-duty service members stationed in Florida with a home of record elsewhere aren’t required to register here; you can keep your home-state plate. If you do choose a Florida plate, you can claim an exemption from the $225 initial registration fee by presenting the Initial Registration Fee Exemption Affidavit (HSMV Form 82002) at a service center.8Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. VIN Verification if the Car Came From Another State

Any vehicle previously titled in another state has to go through a physical VIN verification before Florida will issue a new title. This confirms the VIN stamped on the car matches your paperwork. The verification is recorded on HSMV Form 82042, which also captures your odometer declaration.9Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Vehicle Identification Number and Odometer Reading – Form 82042

Four kinds of officials can sign off: a Florida law enforcement officer, a licensed Florida dealer, an FLHSMV compliance examiner (county tax collector employees included), or a Florida notary public. Getting this done ahead of your visit avoids a return trip. Many dealerships handle it for free if you bought the car from them; a notary usually charges a small fee.9Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Even for a car already titled in Florida, you’ll report the current odometer reading at registration. Accurate odometer disclosure is required on every title application under federal and state law.

The Title Application (HSMV Form 82040)

HSMV Form 82040, the Application for Certificate of Title With/Without Registration, is the form that ties everything together: your ownership documents, insurance information, and registration request. Download it from the FLHSMV site and fill it out before your visit, or complete it at the counter.10Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Money to Bring

Florida’s fees stack up from several separate charges. What you’ll actually pay depends on whether you already have a Florida plate to transfer, the kind of title you need, and how much the vehicle weighs.

Initial Registration Fee

A $225 initial registration fee applies if you don’t already have a Florida plate registered in your name that you can transfer to the new vehicle. New residents, first-time buyers, and anyone who let a previous Florida registration lapse pay this. If you already hold a Florida plate from a car you used to own, you can transfer it and skip the $225.11Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Title Fees

Title fees depend on the transaction type. Figures below are for electronic titles; add $2.50 for a printed paper title and $2.00 if a lien has to be recorded.12Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Fees

  • Original title, new vehicle: $77.25
  • Original title, used vehicle: $85.25
  • Transfer or duplicate title: $75.25

Plate and Annual Weight-Based Fees

A standard license plate costs $28.00. On top of that, the annual registration fee is set by the vehicle’s net weight:12Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Fees

  • Up to 2,499 pounds: $14.50 per year
  • 2,500 to 3,499 pounds: $22.50 per year
  • 3,500 pounds or more: $32.50 per year

Specialty plates add an annual use fee, typically $15 to $25 depending on the design. Personalized plates add $15 per year plus the $28.00 plate fee in the first year. Battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids carry an additional annual surcharge on top of the standard weight-based fee; the amounts have changed in recent legislative sessions, so check the FLHSMV fees page for the current figure before your visit.

Sales Tax on the Purchase

Florida charges 6% state sales tax on the purchase price of a motor vehicle. Most counties add a local discretionary surtax of 0.5% to 1.5%, but that surtax only applies to the first $5,000 of the price.13Florida Department of Revenue. Discretionary Sales Surtax

Two situations reduce or wipe out the tax. If you trade in a vehicle as part of the purchase, the trade-in allowance is subtracted from the taxable price before the 6% is applied. In a private sale between individuals, the trade-in deduction applies only when you swap an aircraft, boat, motor vehicle, or mobile home in a single transaction.14Florida Department of Revenue. Sales and Use Tax on Motor Vehicles If you already paid sales tax to another state before bringing the car to Florida, you get a credit against the Florida tax. If that state’s rate matched or beat Florida’s combined rate, you owe nothing more; if it was lower, you pay the difference. A vehicle used in another state for six months or longer before being brought in is presumed to have been purchased for out-of-state use, and no Florida use tax is due if you can document the six-month period.15Florida Department of Revenue. How to Pay

Most offices take cash, personal checks, and credit or debit cards, though card acceptance and any card surcharge vary by location. Bring a backup payment method if you’re not sure what your office accepts.

The 10-Day Deadline for New Residents

If you’ve just moved to Florida, you have 10 days from establishing residency to title and register your vehicle. Residency is triggered by things like starting a job, enrolling a child in public school, or other steps that show you’ve made Florida your home.2Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. New Resident – Welcome to Florida! Because insurance is one of the required proofs, you’ll need a Florida-licensed policy in place before you walk in, not after.

What You Don’t Need to Bring

Florida doesn’t require emissions testing or periodic safety inspections for passenger vehicles. The state ended its emissions inspection program in 2000, so if you’re coming from a state with annual inspections, that item stays off your list.
